3M Respirator Filters and Cartridges — Bayonet & Secure Click
Which 3M respirator filters and cartridges fit your mask?
Short answer: match the mount first, the hazard second. Bayonet cartridges and filters fit the 6000/6500/7500 half masks and 6000/7800/FF-400 full facepieces; Secure Click D-series parts fit only the HF-800 series. Then match color code to hazard — the cartridge color chart and selection guide walk it, and the 3M cartridge roundup ranks the popular setups.

Which 3M Filter or Cartridge Do You Need?
Start with the hazard, not the part number · NIOSH 42 CFR 84 · 3M Bayonet Connection · Fits 6000 · 6500 · 7500 · 6000 Full Face · FF-400 · 7800 Series
This is the category hub for the entire 3M reusable respirator system. Most buyers don't arrive knowing a part number — they know a job: spray painting, welding, grinding silica, handling chemicals. The table below maps the hazard to the correct starting 3M cartridge or filter so you can choose with confidence, then drill into the product families, compatibility, and setups beneath it. New to selection? The complete Respirator Cartridge Selection Guide and the 3M Filter & Cartridge Guide walk through every decision.
| If You Need Protection From… | Choose (Starting Point) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Paint fumes / solvents | 3M 6001 (Organic Vapor) | Vapor-only hazard, no particulate |
| Paint + dust / overspray | 3M 60921 (OV/P100) | Vapor and particulate in one cartridge |
| Acid gas (chlorine, SO₂, HCl) | 3M 6002 (Acid Gas) | Dedicated acid-gas sorbent |
| Organic vapor + acid gas | 3M 6003 (OV/AG) | Dual-class gas/vapor protection |
| Multi-gas — identified mixture, concentrations reasonably estimated | 3M 6006 (Multi-Gas) | Broadest gas-only chemistry. If the contaminants cannot be identified, no cartridge applies — that is an IDLH atmosphere requiring supplied air. |
| Silica dust | 3M 2097 or 7093 (P100) | P100 particulate efficiency |
| Welding fumes | 3M 2097 (P100 + OV relief) | Fume + nuisance ozone/OV |
| Mold / lead / asbestos | 3M 2091 (P100) | High-efficiency particulate |
| Formaldehyde (lab / mortuary) | 3M 6005 (Formaldehyde/OV) | Dedicated HCHO media |
| Acid gas + particulate | 3M 60923 (OV/AG/P100) | Gas + acid + P100 combined |
Always confirm the contaminant and concentration with an exposure assessment (OSHA 1910.134) — this table is a starting point, not a substitute for an assessment.
Cartridge vs Filter: The Distinction That Governs Every Purchase
A cartridge contains chemical sorbent media (activated carbon and chemical-specific beds) that captures gases and vapors — solvents, acid gases, ammonia, formaldehyde — by adsorption and reaction. A filter is a mechanical barrier that traps particulates — dust, mist, lead, asbestos, silica, welding fume — and is rated N95, P95, or P100 (99.97%, oil-proof). Gas cartridges do nothing against particles; particulate filters do nothing against gases. When a job produces both (spray painting = vapor + mist), you need a combination cartridge (the 60900-series) or a gas cartridge plus a particulate pre-filter. Still unsure which class applies? Read Organic Vapor vs P100 and Gas Cartridge vs Combination Cartridge.
How a 3M Respirator System Works
A reusable 3M respirator is a system, not a single item. Understanding the four building blocks eliminates the most common buying mistakes:
- Facepiece — the reusable half- or full-face respirator (e.g. the 3M 7500 series). Fit-tested, worn for years.
- Cartridge — gas/vapor protection that twists onto the bayonet (e.g. 6001).
- Filter / pre-filter — particulate protection: a bayonet P100 disc (2091) or a snap-on pre-filter (5N11/5P71).
- Retainer — the 3M 501 retainer cap that holds a 5N11/5P71 pre-filter onto a gas cartridge.
Two valid ways to add particulate protection to a vapor job:
| Build | What It Is | Best When |
|---|---|---|
| Facepiece + 6001 + 5N11 + 501 | Gas cartridge + snap-on pre-filter | Lowest cost; pre-filter swapped often |
| Facepiece + 60921 | One combination OV/P100 cartridge | Simplest; no retainer, no stacking |
The 5N11/5P71 path is cheaper per change but has more parts; the 60921 path is simpler and cleaner. Compare the pre-filters in 5N11 vs 5P71.
3M Cartridge & Filter Product Families
3M organizes every bayonet product into four families. Choosing the right family first — gas-only, combination, particulate, or pre-filter — narrows the decision instantly.

- 501 — Filter retainer cap (holds 5N11/5P71)
6001 vs 60921 — The Upgrade Decision
This is the single most common — and most expensive to get wrong — decision on this page. The 6001 and 60921 share identical organic-vapor chemistry; the 60921 simply adds a bonded P100 particulate filter. The question is whether your job produces particles.
| Use 6001 when… | Step up to 60921 when… |
|---|---|
| ✔ Vapor / solvent hazard only | ✔ Dust or mist is also present |
| ✔ Brush/roller painting, adhesives | ✔ Spray painting / overspray |
| ✔ Degreasing, parts cleaning | ✔ Sanding or grinding between coats |
| Lowest cost per cartridge | One part covers both hazards |
When in doubt and particulate might be present, the 60921 removes the risk for a small price premium. Full breakdown: 3M 6001 vs 60921. Also useful: 6003 vs 6006, 6002 vs 60922, 2091 vs 2097, and the 60921 vs 60923 vs 60926 comparison.
Most Popular 3M Cartridge Setups
Real-world builds by job. Each pairs a fit-tested 3M facepiece (the 7500 series shown here) with the correct cartridge or filter.
| Job | Recommended Setup |
|---|---|
| Spray Painting | 7500 facepiece + 60921 (or 6001 + 5N11 + 501) |
| Paint + Dust | 7500 facepiece + 60921 |
| Silica Dust | 7500 facepiece + 2097 (or 7093) |
| Welding | 7500 facepiece + 2097 |
| Acid Gas | 7500 facepiece + 6003 (or 6002) |
| Mold / Lead Paint | Half-mask + 2091 (P100) |
Compatible 3M Respirators
Most cartridges and filters on this page use the 3M bayonet connection — but the 17 Secure Click D-series items use 3M’s four-point Secure Click mount instead, and the two systems do not interchange — so a fleet that mixes bayonet and Secure Click facepieces needs two separate cartridge inventories, one per mount. The bayonet platforms:
| Type | Platforms & Popular Models | Bayonet? |
|---|---|---|
| Half Mask | 6000 (6200), 6500/6500QL (6502QL), 7500 (7502) | ✔ |
| Full Face | 6000 Full Face (6800), FF-400 (FF-402), 7800S | ✔ |
| Secure Click (HF-800) | Different push-to-connect mount — requires Secure Click D-series cartridges only | ✘ |

Understanding 3M Cartridge & Filter Color Codes
Every NIOSH-approved cartridge carries a color code assigned under 42 CFR 84.193 (which applies ANSI K13.1) that signals its protection class at a glance — a fast field check before you mount it. (ANSI/ISEA 110 is a different standard, for smoke escape devices.) The color is a confirmation, not a replacement for reading the label.
| Color Band | Protection | 3M Example |
|---|---|---|
| Black | Organic Vapor | 6001 |
| White | Acid Gas | 6002 |
| Yellow | Organic Vapor + Acid Gas | 6003 |
| Green | Ammonia / Methylamine | 6004 |
| Olive | Multi-Gas | 6006 |
| Magenta | P100 Particulate | 2091, 7093 |
| Black + Magenta | Organic Vapor + P100 | 60921 |
| Olive + Magenta | Multi-Gas + P100 | 60926 |

Frequently Asked Questions — 3M Respirator Cartridges & Filters
Do Secure Click cartridges fit bayonet masks?
No. Secure Click D-series parts fit only the HF-800 facepieces; bayonet cartridges fit the 6000, 6500, 7500 and compatible full facepieces. The mounts do not interchange, whatever a marketplace listing implies.
Which 3M cartridge do I need?
Match the cartridge to your hazard: organic vapor/solvents → 6001; vapor + dust → 60921; acid gas → 6002; OV + acid gas → 6003; multi-gas → 6006; particulate (silica/lead/mold/welding) → a P100 filter like 2097. Use the hazard table at the top of this page and confirm with an OSHA exposure assessment.
What is the difference between the 6001 and 60921?
Both have identical organic-vapor chemistry. The 60921 adds a bonded P100 particulate filter. Use the 6001 for vapor-only work (brush painting, solvents); step up to the 60921 whenever dust, mist, or overspray is present (spray painting, sanding). Details: 6001 vs 60921.
What is the difference between a 3M cartridge and a filter?
A cartridge captures gases and vapors with chemical sorbent media; a filter is a mechanical barrier that traps particulates (rated N95/P95/P100). Use a cartridge for gases, a filter for particles, and a combination cartridge (60900-series) or cartridge-plus-pre-filter when both are present. See Gas vs Combination Cartridge.
Do I need a 501 retainer?
Only for pre-filters. The 5N11 and 5P71 pre-filters snap onto a gas cartridge using the 3M 501 retainer cap. The 2000-series P100 disc filters (2091, 2097) and the 60900-series combination cartridges attach directly to the bayonet and need no retainer.
Which 3M respirators are compatible with these cartridges?
All bayonet cartridges and filters here fit the 6000, 6500/6500QL, and 7500 half-masks and the 6000 full-face, FF-400, and 7800S full-face respirators. They do not fit the 3M Secure Click (HF-800) series, which needs D-series cartridges.
What cartridge do I need for spray painting?
Spray painting produces vapor and mist, so use combined protection: the 3M 60921 (OV/P100), or pair a 6001 with a 5N11 pre-filter and 501 retainer. For 2K/isocyanate paints, follow the paint maker's respiratory guidance and your exposure assessment.
What 3M filter is best for welding?
Welding generates metal fume plus nuisance ozone/OV. The 3M 2097 (P100 + nuisance OV) is the standard welder's filter; the 2291/2297 advanced filters lower breathing resistance for all-day work.
What does each cartridge color mean?
NIOSH cartridge color codes (42 CFR 84.193 / ANSI K13.1): black = organic vapor (6001), white = acid gas (6002), yellow = OV/acid gas (6003), green = ammonia (6004), olive = multi-gas (6006), magenta = P100 particulate (2091), black+magenta = OV/P100 (60921), olive+magenta = multi-gas/P100 (60926). Full decode: cartridge color code guide.
What is a P100 filter and when do I need one?
P100 is the highest NIOSH particulate rating — 99.97% efficiency, oil-proof. You need P100 for high-toxicity particulates: lead, asbestos, silica, cadmium, welding fume. The 2091 is the most common. For lower-toxicity dusts an N95/P95 pre-filter may suffice — see P95 vs P100 and N95 vs P100.
How often should I replace 3M cartridges and filters?
Gas cartridges follow a change-out schedule (OSHA 1910.134(d)(3)) based on contaminant, concentration, breathing rate, and humidity — never rely on smell or taste. Particulate filters are replaced when breathing resistance rises or they are damaged or soiled; pre-filters load faster than P100 discs. See How Long Do Respirator Cartridges Last?
Are 3M cartridges NIOSH approved, and can I mix brands?
Yes — all are NIOSH-approved under 42 CFR Part 84, but approval applies to the complete 3M facepiece-plus-cartridge assembly. You must use 3M cartridges on 3M facepieces; mixing 3M, Honeywell North, or MSA voids the approval. See Are Respirator Cartridges Universal?
What protects against formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde needs a dedicated cartridge: the 6005 (Formaldehyde/OV), or the 60925 if particulate is also present. Standard OV cartridges are not approved for formaldehyde because it has poor warning properties.
What cartridge handles a mix of solvents, acids, and dust?
The 3M 60923 (OV/AG/P100) combines organic vapor, acid gas, and P100 in one part. For the broadest gas chemistry plus P100, use the 60926. Compare in 60921 vs 60923 vs 60926.
5N11 vs 5P71 — which pre-filter do I use?
The 5N11 is an N95 pre-filter for non-oil particulate; the 5P71 is a P95 oil-resistant pre-filter for oil-based mists. Both attach with the 501 retainer. Full comparison: 5N11 vs 5P71.
Do I need a fit test and medical evaluation?
Yes, for occupational use. OSHA 1910.134 requires a medical evaluation, a fit test on the specific facepiece make/model/size, and a written respiratory protection program before any worker uses a tight-fitting respirator. The cartridge choice does not change those requirements.
Are 3M cartridges reusable?
Cartridge bodies and P100 disc filters are reusable until the change-out schedule, end-of-service-life, rising breathing resistance, or damage requires replacement — they are not single-use. Pre-filters load faster and are replaced more often. The facepiece itself lasts years with proper cleaning and storage.

The Secure Click items above fit the HF-800 series only — none of them mount on a bayonet facepiece, and bayonet parts do not mount on an HF-800. The 5N11 and 5P71 prefilters remain the one bayonet special case: both require the 501 retainer to attach. Host facepieces live on the 3M half mask respirators shelf, and powered-air consumables on the PAPR cartridges shelf.
Our methodology
We pulled all 46 live records on this shelf, split them by mount system — the axis the earlier copy got wrong — and verified hazard classes against each listing’s stated approvals. Respirator selection and use rules come from OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, and every NIOSH approval is verifiable on the NIOSH Certified Equipment List. We do not fit-test or lab-test respirators and hold no safety certification.
