Foam ear plugs work because of what the material does after you let go of it. How to choose foam ear plugs
NRR and real-world attenuation
Every plug here is rated NRR 29–33, but the rated number is a laboratory ceiling. OSHA and NIOSH both recommend derating foam plugs in the field — a common method is to subtract 7 from the NRR, then halve the result, when estimating protection from a single hearing protector. Corded vs uncorded
Uncorded plugs are cheapest and best for continuous wear. Choose corded ear plugs when workers move in and out of noise and need to keep the pair together, or where a dropped plug is a contamination risk.
Fit and insertion
Foam plugs only deliver their rated NRR when rolled down tightly and inserted deep enough to expand inside the canal. Self-fitting tapered designs such as the Howard Leight Laser Lite LL-1 reduce fit errors on lines where training time is short.
Why foam reaches ratings other materials cannot
The seal is the whole story. A pre-molded flanged plug has one shape and your canal has another, so the fit is a compromise; foam has no shape until it is in place, so it fills the canal along its length rather than sealing at one or two points. That is why the top of the foam range reaches NRR 33 while pre-molded reusable plugs stop around 31.
Two material properties do the work. Recovery rate — the foam must expand slowly enough that you can insert it fully before it starts pushing back, which is why a plug that has gone stiff with age or been washed no longer seals even though it still looks fine. And cell structure: the closed-cell skin keeps the plug from absorbing wax and sweat while the open cells inside give it the compressibility. Damage either and the rating goes with it. When foam isn't the answer
If plugs are removed and reinserted dozens of times a shift, washable reusable ear plugs cost less over time. In very high or impulse noise, pair foam plugs with ear muffs for dual protection (add 5 dB to the higher device's NRR as a rule of thumb).

How do I insert foam ear plugs correctly?
Roll the plug into a thin, crease-free cylinder, reach over your head to pull the ear up and back, insert past the canal opening, and hold for 20–30 seconds while it expands. A correctly seated plug looks short from the outside and noticeably muffles your own voice.
Are foam ear plugs reusable?
They are single-use. Foam absorbs earwax and grime and loses its recovery, which degrades the seal. For repeated daily use, switch to reusable ear plugs.

What is the difference between PU and PVC foam ear plugs?
Polyurethane is the modern default and PVC is the older chemistry, and the practical difference is feel rather than protection. Listings vary the wording more than the product — soft foam ear plugs, earplug foam, even ear foam ear plugs all describe the same expandable material. PU is softer, recovers more slowly and generally suits smaller canals; PVC is denser with a slightly faster recovery, which some wearers find easier to seat but others find firmer against the canal wall over a long shift. Both reach the top of the rating range — the 3M E-A-R Classic is PVC and rates NRR 29, while PU plugs here reach 33. If one material has never felt right to you, trying the other is a cheaper experiment than moving to a reusable plug.
Why does washing a foam ear plug ruin it?
Because it destroys the property the rating depends on. Washing collapses and stiffens the cell walls, so the foam no longer recovers at the right rate — it either springs back too fast to insert properly or stays compressed and never fills the canal. The plug looks and feels almost normal, which is the dangerous part: the wearer has no signal that attenuation has dropped. This is the single clearest reason foam is single-use and pre-molded plugs are not.
Is every plug in this collection actually foam?

Does foam color mean anything?
Only what the manufacturer decides it means, with one practical exception: high-visibility colours exist so a supervisor can confirm at a glance that plugs are being worn, which matters more than it sounds on a line where compliance is checked visually. Bright plugs are also easier to spot if one is dropped. Color tells you nothing about the rating — two plugs from the same brand in different colours are often the same plug — so read the NRR rather than assuming the darker or denser-looking one protects more.

How long does a foam plug stay effective once it is in?
A correctly inserted foam plug holds its seal for a full shift, but the first minute is when it is most likely to fail. Foam continues expanding after insertion, and jaw movement from talking or chewing can work a shallow plug outward before it has fully set — so check the seal a minute after fitting, not just at the moment you put it in. If you can hear your own voice getting louder and more hollow, the plug is sealing; if the room sounds much the same, it is not deep enough. Replace at the end of the shift, or sooner if it is dirty, wet or will not hold its rolled shape.
