What hazards do jobsite tools actually carry?
Short answer: four of the six categories here have a genuine exposure attached, and none of them is obvious from a product listing. A laser level has a laser class. A jobsite radio adds to your noise dose. A torque wrench is only as good as its calibration. A tool belt loads your back and drops things from height. Those four are why a personal protective equipment site covers tools at all, and they are what this page is organized around.
This collection is the parent of six: 10 laser levels, 10 torque wrenches, 10 tool belts and pouches, 10 tool bags and boxes, 10 measuring and layout tools, and 9 jobsite radios. Every product here sits in one of those six, so this page compares across them rather than duplicating them.
What does the laser class on a laser level mean?
It is the single most overlooked marking in this collection, and it is printed on every laser product sold. Laser output is classified under IEC 60825-1, with ANSI Z136.1 covering safe use in the United States, and for tools you will mostly encounter two classes.
Class 2 is low-power visible laser output. Its safety case rests on the blink reflex โ the assumption that you will look away within a quarter of a second, which is enough to prevent injury under normal use. That protection disappears if you deliberately stare into the beam or view it through magnifying optics.
Class 3R is higher output. The blink reflex is no longer assumed to be sufficient, direct viewing carries real risk of eye injury, and these need to be treated with correspondingly more care โ beam at or below eye level where practical, no aiming at people, and awareness of reflective surfaces that can redirect the beam unexpectedly.
Check the class on the label before you assume. Outdoor and long-range levels tend toward higher output because the beam has to stay visible at distance, so the more capable tool is often the higher class. We are not stating a class for any individual product here โ read the marking on the unit, because it is the one specification that changes how you must handle it.
One practical note: laser levels are frequently used with enhancement glasses that make the beam easier to see. Those are contrast filters. They are not laser protective eyewear, which is specified by wavelength and optical density under ANSI Z136 and is a different product entirely.
Does a jobsite radio count as noise exposure?
Yes, and it is the exposure people most readily dismiss because they chose it. A radio has to be loud enough to be heard over the tools it is competing with, which means it is contributing to the same daily dose the tools are โ and unlike the tools, it runs continuously rather than in bursts.
Noise exposure is cumulative across a shift and is assessed as a time-weighted average under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95, which sets the hearing conservation program requirements. Work out your actual dose with the noise exposure calculator or the method in how to calculate noise exposure TWA. The NIOSH occupational noise topic page covers why the recommended limit is stricter than the legal one.
Two consequences worth acting on. First, if hearing protection is already required in your area, a radio playing over it is raising the level everyone is exposed to, not just the listener's. Second, radio earmuffs are a better answer than a loud radio โ they deliver the audio inside the protection rather than fighting it. See hearing protection, when do you need hearing protection and the NRR calculator.
Why does torque wrench calibration matter?
Because a torque wrench is a measuring instrument, and an uncalibrated one gives you a number you trust and should not. It drifts with use, and it drifts faster if it is dropped, stored under load, or used as a breaker bar.
That matters most where the fastener is doing structural or safety-critical work โ anchor bolts, equipment mounts, wheel fasteners, anything where under-torque means it works loose and over-torque means the bolt yields. Both failure modes are invisible until they are not.
Three habits that cost nothing: wind a click-type wrench back to its lowest setting before storing it, so the spring is not held compressed; do not use it to loosen fasteners; and have it verified on a schedule rather than when it feels wrong. The range is in torque wrenches.
What should you know about tool belts?
Two things, and the second one only applies at height.
Load and back strain. A fully loaded belt puts weight on your lower back and pulls your posture forward all day. Suspenders shift some of that to the shoulders, and the honest fix is carrying less rather than distributing more. If back load is already a concern, see back support belts.
Dropped objects. Once you are working at height, everything on that belt is a potential falling object, and a dropped tool is a hazard to the people below rather than to you. That is dropped-object prevention, covered by ANSI/ISEA 121, and it is an entirely different standard from the fall protection holding you up. Tools get tethered โ see tool lanyards and best tool lanyards.
For trade-specific layout, best tool belts for electricians covers how pouch arrangement follows the work.
How is this collection organized?
| Category | Products | Hazard worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Laser levels | 10 | โ Laser class โ Class 2 vs Class 3R |
| Jobsite radios | 9 | โ Adds to daily noise dose |
| Torque wrenches | 10 | โ Calibration drift on critical fasteners |
| Tool belts & pouches | 10 | โ Back load; dropped objects at height |
| Tool bags & boxes | 10 | Manual handling weight |
| Measuring & layout | 10 | Stud finders: verify before cutting |
Brands across the six include DEWALT, Milwaukee, BOSCH, Klein Tools, CRAFTSMAN, Stanley, RIDGID, Huepar and Franklin Sensors.
Where should you actually start?
In one of the six child collections rather than here. This page exists to point out what each category exposes you to; the buying comparison โ beam range and self-leveling on a laser, drive size and range on a torque wrench, pouch layout on a belt โ lives one level down, and each of the six is linked above and in the table.
If you came looking for a specific tool type, go straight there. If you came to work out which tools on your site need a control wrapped around them, the hazard column above is the shortlist.
Editor's pick: before buying any laser level, check the class marking on the unit. It is the one specification in this entire collection that changes how the tool must be handled, it is printed on every laser product, and it is absent from most product descriptions.

Our methodology: what is on this page, and what it cannot do
We counted this collection against the storefront rather than trusting the heading: 59 products that are exactly the union of six child collections, with nothing outside them. We have deliberately not stated a laser class for any individual product, because that marking is on the unit and we have not verified it per item โ the page explains the classification system and tells you to read the label. Torque and noise guidance is framed as practice rather than as numbers specific to your job, because both depend on the fastener and the shift in front of you. And we point you down to the child collections rather than trying to hold you here, because the comparison you need is one level below this page.
Jobsite Tools FAQ
What laser class are laser levels?
Most tool lasers are Class 2 or Class 3R under IEC 60825-1. Class 2 relies on your blink reflex for protection; Class 3R does not, and direct viewing carries real risk. The class is printed on the unit โ read it rather than assuming.
Are laser enhancement glasses laser protection?
No. Enhancement glasses are contrast filters that make the beam easier to see. Laser protective eyewear is specified by wavelength and optical density under ANSI Z136 and is a different product.
Does a jobsite radio affect hearing protection requirements?
Yes. A radio loud enough to hear over power tools contributes to the same daily noise dose the tools do, and it runs continuously rather than in bursts. Radio earmuffs deliver audio inside the protection instead of competing with it.
How often should a torque wrench be calibrated?
On a schedule rather than when it feels wrong. A torque wrench is a measuring instrument that drifts with use, and faster if dropped, stored under load or used to loosen fasteners.
Should I store a click-type torque wrench at its lowest setting?
Yes. Winding it back releases the spring rather than leaving it compressed, which is one of the simplest things you can do to keep it in calibration.
Why do tool belts matter for safety?
Two reasons. A loaded belt puts sustained weight on the lower back, and at height everything on it becomes a potential dropped object โ a hazard to people below rather than to the wearer.
Is a tool lanyard the same as fall protection?
No. Tool tethering is dropped-object prevention under ANSI/ISEA 121; fall protection keeps a person from falling and is a different standard entirely. A tool tether must never be connected to a worker as fall protection.
What is in this collection?
59 products across six categories: 10 laser levels, 10 torque wrenches, 10 tool belts and pouches, 10 tool bags and boxes, 10 measuring and layout tools, and 9 jobsite radios.
Why does a PPE site sell tools?
Because four of the six categories carry an exposure the site already covers โ laser class, noise dose, torque accuracy on critical fasteners, and dropped objects from height. The tools are where those hazards originate.
Should I start on this page or a child collection?
A child collection, if you know the tool type you want. This page compares the hazards across categories; the specification comparison lives one level down.
Do stud finders need verifying?
Treat any stud or scanner reading as an indication rather than a certainty, and verify before cutting or drilling into a wall where services may run.
Which brands are in this collection?
DEWALT, Milwaukee, BOSCH, Klein Tools, CRAFTSMAN, Stanley, RIDGID, Huepar, Franklin Sensors and others across the six categories.
How the categories break down
Searches for jobsite tools, construction site tools and trade tools land on this comparison, which is what a parent category is for. Anything more specific belongs one level down: jobsite tool storage in tool bags and boxes, beam range and self-leveling in laser levels, drive size and torque range in torque wrenches, and pouch layout in tool belts and pouches. Every product on this page appears in exactly one of the six, so nothing is lost by starting there.
Why trust WC Safety on jobsite tools?
WC Safety reviews workplace PPE full-time as an independent affiliate site โ we do not sell products, hold no inventory, and accept no paid placements. A tools page on a safety site has to justify itself, and this one does it by leading with what each category exposes you to rather than with specifications: the laser class printed on a level, the noise a radio adds to a dose that is already being measured, the calibration a torque wrench quietly loses, and the fact that everything on a tool belt becomes a falling object once you are at height. It declines to state a laser class for any individual product, because that marking is on the unit and we have not verified it item by item โ naming the classification system and telling you to read the label is the honest version. It says that laser enhancement glasses are not laser protection, which is a distinction the product names actively blur. And it tells you to start in a child collection rather than here. Standards referenced are IEC 60825-1, ANSI Z136.1, ANSI/ISEA 121 and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95. Reviewed by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor. Last reviewed: July 2026.
