3M Full Face Respirators
Which 3m full face respirator should you buy in 2026?
Short answer: pick the family by wear pattern. The 6000 Series is the economy default for intermittent use. The 7800S is the silicone workhorse for daily wear. The 3m ultimate fx (3m ff-400) adds the widest lens and a speaking diaphragm for jobs where visibility and communication matter. And the 3m secure click full face FF-800 swaps the bayonet for push-to-connect cartridges you can change in gloves. All four are APF 50 full face respirator mask platforms once fit tested; three share the bayonet cartridge system, and the Secure Click uses its own. Written as one word or two, a 3m fullface respirator search lands on these same four families.
The four families at a glance
| Family | Sizes | Cartridge system | Buy for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6000 Series (6700/6800/6900) | S/M/L as variants | 3M bayonet | Intermittent use, crews, lowest cost to APF 50 |
| 7800S Series | S/M/L | 3M bayonet | Daily wear, decontamination cycles |
| Ultimate FX FF-400 | S/M/L | 3M bayonet | Visibility + speaking diaphragm |
| Secure Click FF-800 | S/M/L | Push-to-connect (own system) | Gloved cartridge changes, speech option |
Cross-brand comparison lives on full face mask respirators.

Our methodology
All seven listings tagged to this shelf were read and counted: four multi-size product families — 6000 Series, Ultimate FX FF-400, 7800S, Secure Click FF-800 — plus three single-variant Amazon-import listings that duplicate sizes already sold inside those families (an FF-403, a 6900 and a 6700). An earlier version of this page described "three families, nine models," which matched neither count; it also presented nine per-model review links that all pointed at one identical article. Both are corrected — the duplicates are flagged for retirement, and review links now say what they are. Approvals should be verified per facepiece-plus-cartridge assembly on the NIOSH Certified Equipment List; program rules come from OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. We do not fit-test or lab-test respirators and hold no safety certification.
Why trust this page
WC Safety is an independent review site with no products of its own; purchase links go to Amazon and earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. 3M does not pay for placement — which is why this page corrects its own earlier miscount, names the duplicate listings on its own shelf, and tells intermittent users to buy the cheapest family rather than the one with the best margin.
Frequently asked questions — 3M full face respirators
What makes the 3m secure click full face different from the bayonet masks?
The cartridge interface. Secure Click cartridges push straight on until they click — no quarter-turn alignment — which is genuinely easier with gloves on and gives an audible confirmation the seal seated. The FF-800 also offers a speaking diaphragm option. The cost of that convenience is a second cartridge inventory: Secure Click filters are their own fitting, so a bayonet stockroom does not serve it. Sites standardized on bayonet usually stay there; new programs that will live in gloves should look hard at Secure Click.
Is the 3m ultimate fx worth it over the 7800S?
They solve different daily-wear problems. The 3m ff-400 leads on the lens — a wide, scratch-resistant wraparound with the best field of view 3M makes, plus a passive speaking diaphragm — which suits inspection, supervision and any job where seeing and being understood matter. The 7800S leads on the classic machined-silicone seal and long decontamination life. Protection ties at APF 50. If your day is communication-heavy, FX; if it is chemical-heavy scrubbing and washdowns, 7800S.
Why do some 3m full face mask listings look like duplicates?
Because three are. This shelf carries three single-size Amazon-import listings — an FF-403 Large, a 6900 Large and a 6700 Small — that duplicate sizes already sold as variants inside the multi-size family listings. Same masks, redundant listings, and we have flagged them for retirement. Until then, buy from the family listings linked above: they carry the full size runs and the complete specifications.
Do all 3m full face respirators use the same cartridges?
Three of the four families do — 6000, 7800S and Ultimate FX all take the standard 3M bayonet range from 3M cartridges and filters, shared with the half masks. The Secure Click FF-800 is the exception with its push-to-connect fitting. Either way the approval attaches to the exact facepiece-plus-cartridge assembly, and the cartridge selector maps your hazard to the right chemistry before brand even enters it.
What assigned protection factor do 3M full-face respirators provide?
A 3M full-face respirator is rated at an OSHA assigned protection factor of 50, achievable once the facepiece is fit-tested and loaded with the correct cartridges or filters.
Are cartridges or filters bundled with a 3M full-face facepiece?
Typically the 3M reusable facepiece is sold separately from its consumables. You then add the cartridge or filter for your hazard - particulate, organic vapor, acid gas, or a combination.
Do I need a fit test for a 3M full-face respirator?
Yes. A fit test is required at first use and each year under OSHA 1910.134, plus a medical evaluation, because the seal between your face and the 3M facepiece determines the protection.
Can a 3M full-face respirator be worn with facial hair?
No. Facial hair through the sealing surface breaks the seal and fails fit testing. The sealing area must be clean-shaven for a tight-fitting 3M full-face respirator to protect you.
How frequently are the cartridges or filters replaced?
Follow a change schedule tied to the contaminant and its concentration. Particulate filters are swapped when breathing resistance rises; gas or vapor cartridges go on schedule or at the first odor or taste.
Is a 3M full-face better than a half-mask for me?
The 3M full-face adds eye protection and a higher protection factor in one unit. A half-mask is lighter and fits jobs where eyes are protected separately and only basic breathing protection is needed.
Can a 3M full-face respirator handle oxygen-deficient or IDLH areas?
No. This 3M air-purifying respirator cleans air but cannot add oxygen. Oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmospheres require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA.
What is the correct way to clean and store a 3M full-face respirator?
Disassemble the 3M facepiece, wash it with a mild cleaner, rinse, and air-dry. Keep it sealed in a bag, protected from sunlight, dust, and the contaminants it is built to block.
Which sizes do 3M full-face respirators come in?
3M reusable full-face facepieces generally come in small, medium, and large. Since sizing sets the seal, a fit test confirms which 3M facepiece gives a reliable, leak-free fit.
How long does a 3M full-face respirator last?
Cared for properly, the 3M facepiece lasts for years. Cartridges, filters, and wearing parts like straps and valves are consumables you renew as they wear out.
