Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide poisoning is a medical emergency requiring immediate action — the gas interferes directly with the blood's ability to carry oxygen, causing progressive neurological impairment, loss of consciousness, and death at sustained exposures. CO sources in homes and businesses include gas furnaces, water heaters, boilers, generators, gas-powered equipment, attached garages, and any fuel-burning appliance operating in an enclosed or poorly ventilated space. Because CO is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, the only reliable detection method is electronic monitoring. Symptom progression with CO exposure follows a predictable pattern based on concentration. At 70 ppm, occupants experience headache, fatigue, and nausea — symptoms often dismissed as a common cold or flu. At 150-200 ppm, dizziness, disorientation, and impaired coordination develop. At 400 ppm, life-threatening symptoms emerge rapidly. At 1600 ppm, death can occur within one hour of exposure. CO detectors that alarm at low concentration thresholds provide maximum warning time at the concentrations where symptoms are still mild and victims can respond effectively. Detectors that only alarm at high concentrations may trigger after occupants have already lost the cognitive capacity to respond.

CO detector placement requirements differ slightly from smoke detector placement. CO rises and disperses throughout a space more uniformly than smoke, so ceiling versus wall mounting has less impact on detection speed than for smoke. However, CO detectors should be installed at sleeping height — approximately 5 feet above the floor — to detect concentrations in the breathing zone where sleeping occupants would be exposed. Install detectors on every level of the home, near sleeping areas, and near any fuel-burning appliances when possible. Avoid placement in garages, near gas appliances (within 15 feet of the appliance), or near HVAC return vents that could dilute CO before it reaches the sensor.

Combination CO and smoke alarms provide dual-hazard coverage in areas where both fire and CO risk exist. The two hazards' detection technologies are independent within the same housing unit — ionization or photoelectric sensors detect smoke while electrochemical sensors detect CO. Each alarm type uses a distinct sound pattern (3 beeps for smoke, 4 beeps for CO) and, in voice alarm models, announces the specific hazard type and location. Using combination alarms in bedrooms and hallways reduces the total number of devices required while ensuring both hazards are detected wherever occupants sleep.

Generator CO hazard has received significant attention after numerous deaths each year attributed to generator use in occupied or semi-enclosed spaces. Portable generators produce CO at levels that can be lethal within minutes in a garage, even with the garage door open. CO alarms with battery backup — or CO-specific alerts transmitted to smartphones — can detect generator CO infiltrating into living spaces from an adjacent garage. Never operate any fuel-burning engine or appliance inside any enclosed space, including garages, and position generators at least 20 feet from any window or door opening.

Emergency response to a CO alarm requires immediate action: evacuate everyone from the building, call 911, and do not re-enter until emergency responders have cleared the building and identified and corrected the CO source. Do not dismiss a CO alarm as a false alarm without having the source verified by professionals — many CO poisoning deaths have occurred when occupants silenced alarms and returned to sleep without investigating. Provide fresh air to symptomatic occupants and seek immediate medical evaluation for anyone experiencing headache, nausea, or confusion following a CO alarm.
