Jobsite Ladders
Which ladder duty rating do you actually need in 2026?
Short answer: For most trades: a Type IA (300 lb) fiberglass step ladder - the Louisville FS1506 6-foot is the reference pick. Electricians should stay fiberglass at any height; heavy users and industrial sites step up to Type IAA 375 lb.
Jobsite Ladders (2026)
Every ladder here carries an ANSI duty rating - the working load including you, your tools, and what you carry. The lineup runs from 2-foot Type IA step stools to a 12-foot Type IA and a 10-foot Type IAA, nearly all fiberglass: non-conductive when clean and dry, which is why it is the jobsite default. Part of the Jobsite Equipment & Tools department; siblings: Hand Trucks & Dollies, Utility & Platform Carts, Cargo Control & Tie-Downs, Casters & Wheels, Pallet Jacks, Shelving & Storage Racks, Scaffolding & Work Platforms, Lifting, Pulling & Positioning, Dock & Warehouse Equipment, Pallet Wraps & Stretch Wrap, Equipment Movers & Machine Skates, Forklift Attachments, Conveyors.

Which one should you buy?
- Buy the Louisville FS1506 6 ft as the default trade ladder.
- Buy the Louisville 4 ft Type IA for interior finish work at outlet-and-cabinet height.
- Buy the Louisville 10 ft Type IAA for industrial duty at 375 lb working load.
- Buy the Little Giant Ultra 3-step platform for long-dwell tasks - the platform saves your feet.
- Buy the HBTower 5-step with handrails for facility work where less-experienced staff climb.
How to choose
Duty rating first
Type IAA = 375 lb, Type IA = 300 lb, Type I = 250 lb, Type II = 225 lb. Add your weight, tool belt, and carried material - most tradespeople clear 250 lb before the drill comes up the ladder. Buy Type IA as the floor for daily trade use.
Fiberglass unless you have a reason
Non-conductive rails (clean and dry) are why fiberglass owns jobsites - aluminum is lighter but has no place near electrical. Every Louisville model here is fiberglass.
Height math
Max safe standing height is two rungs down from the top of a step ladder; you should never stand the top cap. A 6 ft step ladder works to roughly a 10 ft ceiling; buy the height that keeps your belt buckle inside the rails.
Platform ladders for dwell time
If the task holds you up there - taping, panel work, sprinkler heads - a platform model with a top rail beats balancing on a rung for an hour.
Regulatory context
OSHA 1926.1053 (construction) and 1910.23 (general industry) govern ladder condition, setup, and use; ANSI ASC A14 sets the duty-rating classes. Inspect before use, keep three points of contact, and take fall-protection requirements seriously above 6 feet in construction.
Frequently asked questions
What does Type IA vs Type II actually mean?
ANSI duty ratings by working load: IAA 375 lb, IA 300 lb, I 250 lb, II 225 lb, III 200 lb. It is a strength class, not a quality grade - but jobsite ladders should be Type IA or better.
Are fiberglass ladders really non-conductive?
The rails are non-conductive when clean and dry - contamination, moisture, and metal hardware change that. Fiberglass is the correct choice near electrical, and still not a license to work hot.
What ladder height do I need for a 10-foot ceiling?
A 6 ft step ladder - your safe standing height is about 4 ft, putting working reach near 10 ft. For 12 ft ceilings move to an 8 ft ladder; the Louisville 5 ft splits the difference for 9 ft rooms.
Louisville vs the unbranded fiberglass ladders here?
The Louisville models carry decades of pro track record and consistent ANSI labeling; the unbranded 500 lb listings are newer and priced lower. We list both with their published specs - the brand premium buys history, not a different physics.
Can I stand on the top of a step ladder?
No - the top cap and the step below it are off limits on a standard step ladder. If you need that height, you need a taller ladder or a platform model.
When does OSHA require fall protection instead of a ladder?
Construction fall-protection rules generally trigger at 6 feet - long-duration work at height belongs on scaffolds or lifts with protection, not a step ladder. A ladder is for access and short tasks.
Step ladder or platform ladder?
Task time decides: minutes on a rung is fine, an hour is not. Platform models like the Little Giant Ultra give a standing deck and rail for dwell-time work.
How do I inspect a ladder?
Before each use: cracked or gouged rails, loose rung-to-rail connections, working spreaders, intact feet, and no paint hiding damage. Tag and remove damaged ladders - fiberglass repairs are not a thing.
Why no extension ladders in this lineup yet?
This wave concentrated on step and platform ladders, where the strongest-rated listings live; extension and telescoping models join as the collection grows. The duty-rating logic is identical.
Do these ladders meet ANSI standards?
Every listing here publishes its ANSI type rating, quoted in our table. We transcribe what the manufacturer certifies - the label on the rail is the authoritative document.
