Organic Vapor Respirator Cartridges
Rated OV Sorbent Beds · OV and OV/P100 · NIOSH 42 CFR 84 · 3M · Moldex · MSA · Honeywell North · GVS · Gerson
Which organic vapor respirator cartridge do you need?
Short answer: if the job is vapor only, a gas-only cartridge such as the 3M 6001, Moldex 7100, or MSA GMA is correct and lighter. If the job also produces mist, overspray, or dust — spray painting, sanding a coated surface — you need a combination such as the 3M 60921 (OV/P100). If acids are present too, the 6003 (OV/AG) adds that bed.
Editor's pick: the 3M 60921 OV/P100 — most real solvent work also throws particulates, and the combination removes the most common selection error without asking anyone to judge the mix on the day.

Our methodology: how this collection was curated
We report the NIOSH approval exactly as the manufacturer states it, and we never let "nuisance level" stand in for a rated organic vapor bed — where a product carries only nuisance relief we say so and count it separately, because the labelling is easy to skim past. We record whether each cartridge is gas-only or a combination with a particulate filter, since that decides whether it suits spray work. Fitting systems are noted per product, because approval covers the complete assembly rather than the cartridge alone, and we flag where an item in this grid is not a cartridge at all.
Organic Vapor Respirator Cartridges (2026)
An organic vapor cartridge works by adsorption: solvent molecules stick to an enormous internal surface area of activated carbon until the bed is saturated, at which point the contaminant passes straight through. That mechanism drives every practical rule on this page. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 you need a documented change schedule for gas and vapor cartridges unless the cartridge carries an end-of-service-life indicator, precisely because the wearer cannot sense the bed loading. Approvals are issued by NIOSH under 42 CFR Part 84 and each model can be confirmed against the CDC NIOSH-approved respirator list or the NIOSH Certified Equipment List.
What this collection covers — and what it does not
Fifty-four products from 3M, Moldex, MSA, Honeywell North, GVS, and Gerson. They fall into four groups, and telling them apart is the whole job:
- 18 rated OV cartridges, gas only. Vapor protection with no particulate filter: 3M 6001, 6003, 6005 formaldehyde, 6006 multi-gas, 6007 mercury, Secure Click D8001, Moldex 7100, MSA GMA, Honeywell North N75001L, and the Gerson G01.
- 21 rated OV combinations with a particulate filter. The 3M 60921 family, MSA GMA/P100 and GMC/P100, Honeywell 7581P100L and 7583P100L, Moldex 7367, Gerson G73, and the GVS Elipse SPR468. See combination respirator cartridges for the full set.
- 10 with no rated organic vapor protection at all. These carry nuisance-level OV relief only: 3M 2097, 2297, 2078, 7093C, Moldex 7760 — and five disposable masks, including the Moldex 2400N95. Read the section below before buying any of them for solvent work.
- 5 powered-air items — the Versaflo TR-6510N and TR-6530N cartridges, plus three complete PAPR kits such as the TR-800-PSK painters kit. These belong to a different respirator class — see PAPR cartridges and powered air purifying respirators.
Related: acid gas cartridges, multi-gas cartridges, nuisance relief respirators, the filters and cartridges hub, the facepieces in half mask respirators, and paint spray respirators.

How to choose an organic vapor mask or cartridge without getting it wrong
Is a "nuisance OV" product an organic vapor mask?
No, and this is the single most important thing on the page. Nuisance-level relief is a thin carbon layer meant to make an odor less unpleasant at concentrations already below the permissible exposure limit. It carries no organic vapor approval, and NIOSH does not certify it as vapor protection. Ten products in this grid fall into that category, and five of them are disposable masks — a Moldex 2400N95 labelled "Nuisance OV" is an N95 filtering facepiece, not a solvent respirator. Anyone reaching for a disposable mask to spray paint or handle solvents needs a half mask with a rated OV cartridge instead. If you can smell the solvent, that is not the mask underperforming; it is the mask doing the only job it has.
Do I need a plain OV cartridge or an OV/P100 combination?
Ask whether the task makes particles as well as vapor. Decanting or wiping with solvent produces vapor alone, so a gas-only cartridge is correct and noticeably lighter on the face. Spraying, however, atomises the coating — you get both solvent vapor and liquid aerosol — and sanding a cured finish adds dust, so both need an OV/P100. Fitting a plain 6001 for spray work leaves the particulate side entirely uncovered, which is the most common error in this category after the nuisance mix-up.
How long does a carbon bed last?
There is no honest general answer, which is exactly why OSHA requires a written change schedule rather than a rule of thumb. Service life depends on the specific solvent, its concentration, your breathing rate, humidity, and temperature — high humidity in particular shortens it, because water competes for the same adsorption sites. Carbon gives no warning before breakthrough, so smelling or tasting the contaminant means the bed is already spent. Our guide to ESLI versus a written change schedule covers building one, and the 3M 6007 is an example of a cartridge with an indicator.
Will an organic vapor cartridge handle any chemical?
No. The organic vapor class covers many solvents but not everything, and several substances need a different bed entirely — ammonia and methylamine, formaldehyde, mercury vapor, and acid gases each have their own approval. Some materials also break through carbon unusually fast. Always check the chemical against the manufacturer's selection guide and the safety data sheet rather than assuming the OV class is a catch-all, and see organic vapor vs acid gas for the nearest boundary.
Will these cartridges fit my respirator?
Only if the fitting matches. 3M bayonet, 3M Secure Click, MSA Comfo, MSA Advantage, North's own connector, Moldex 7000/9000, and GVS Elipse are separate systems that do not interchange, and NIOSH approval applies to the assembled respirator rather than the cartridge on its own. Check the fitting against your facepiece before ordering — are respirator cartridges universal covers why they are not.
Storage, service life, and hard limits
Keep unused cartridges sealed in their original packaging. Activated carbon adsorbs from ordinary room air whether or not anyone is wearing it, so an unwrapped cartridge on a shelf — or one left attached to a respirator hanging in a workshop — is spending its service life doing nothing useful. Between shifts, seal the facepiece with cartridges fitted in a bag rather than leaving it exposed, and observe the manufacturer's shelf-life dating.
One hard limit applies to everything here: no air-purifying cartridge may be used in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere, in an atmosphere immediately dangerous to life or health, or where the contaminant is unidentified or unmeasured. These cartridges clean the air around you; they do not supply air. Those conditions require supplied-air or self-contained breathing apparatus. Organic vapor cartridge FAQ
What is an organic vapor respirator cartridge?
A cartridge containing an activated-carbon sorbent bed that adsorbs solvent vapors, carrying a NIOSH approval for the organic vapor class. It attaches to a half mask or full facepiece and is replaced on a schedule.
Is a nuisance-level OV product the same as a rated cartridge?
No. Nuisance relief reduces odor below the permissible exposure limit and carries no organic vapor approval. That includes every disposable mask labelled "Nuisance OV" — those are particulate respirators, not solvent protection.
Can I use a disposable mask for solvent fumes?
No. A filtering facepiece captures particles; it does not adsorb vapor. Solvent work needs a half mask or full facepiece fitted with a rated organic vapor cartridge.
Do I need a plain OV cartridge or an OV/P100?
Plain OV if the task produces vapor only, such as decanting or wiping. OV/P100 if it also produces mist or dust — spraying and sanding both do, and a gas-only cartridge leaves the particulate side uncovered.
How long does an organic vapor cartridge last?
It depends on the solvent, concentration, breathing rate, humidity and temperature, which is why OSHA requires a written change schedule instead of a rule of thumb. Humidity shortens service life because water competes for adsorption sites.
Will I smell the chemical before the cartridge fails?
Do not rely on it. Carbon gives no warning before breakthrough, and smelling or tasting the contaminant means it is already passing through. Change on schedule, not on symptoms.
Does an organic vapor cartridge cover every chemical?
No. Ammonia, formaldehyde, mercury vapor and acid gases each need their own bed, and some substances break through carbon quickly. Check the safety data sheet and the manufacturer's selection guide.
Will any cartridge fit my respirator?
No. 3M bayonet, 3M Secure Click, MSA Comfo, MSA Advantage, North's own connector, Moldex and GVS Elipse are separate fitting systems, and approval applies to the complete assembly. Confirm the fitting before ordering.
What is the difference between the 3M 6001 and 6003?
The 6001 is rated for organic vapor alone; the 6003 adds an acid gas bed. Neither includes a particulate filter — for that you need a combination such as the 60921.
Which cartridge should I use for spray painting?
An organic vapor bed with a P100 filter, because spraying produces both solvent vapor and aerosol. Check the coating's safety data sheet, since isocyanate-containing systems carry specific requirements.
Can I use these in a confined space?
Not where oxygen may be deficient or the atmosphere is IDLH or unmeasured. Air-purifying cartridges filter surrounding air and cannot address oxygen deficiency; those situations need supplied-air or self-contained apparatus.
Do unused cartridges expire?
Yes. Carbon adsorbs from ambient air whenever unsealed, so keep cartridges in their original packaging, observe shelf-life dating, and do not store a respirator with cartridges fitted and exposed.
Why trust WC Safety on respiratory protection?
WC Safety reviews workplace PPE full-time as an independent affiliate site — we do not sell products, hold no inventory, and accept no paid placements. On this page that means counting out, by name, the ten products here that provide no rated organic vapor protection — including five disposable masks whose "Nuisance OV" labelling reads like solvent protection and is not — and telling you that five more are powered-air items belonging to a different respirator class. We report NIOSH approvals exactly as issued, distinguish gas-only cartridges from combinations, and state the limit that no cartridge on this page belongs in an oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmosphere. Standards referenced are NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. Reviewed by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor. Last reviewed: July 2026.
