Manual Pallet Jack — Fork Width Decides Fit, Not Capacity

Which pallet jack fits your dock in 2026?

Short answer: Every jack here is a manual pallet jack — hand-pumped, no battery, no certification required. The Global Industrial 5,500 lb with standard 27 x 48 in forks fits GMA pallets and is the fleet-grade default; the NORTHSKY 5,500 lb does the same duty at a working price, and narrow-fork models handle half pallets and tight aisles.

Pallet Jacks (2026)

A manual pallet jack — a hand pallet truck, in the trade term — is the cheapest way to move 5,000 lb safely. Sixteen listings here, in four groups: seven standard 27 x 48 in fork trucks that fit GMA pallets, three narrow 21 in models for half pallets and close aisles, two mini 15 in units rated 2,200 lb for small crates and light skids, and four wheel chocks that should live at every dock door. Capacities run 2,200 to 6,600 lb. Part of the Jobsite Equipment & Tools department; siblings: Hand Trucks & Dollies, Utility & Platform Carts, Jobsite Ladders, Cargo Control & Tie-Downs, Casters & Wheels, Shelving & Storage Racks.

Editor's pick - Global Industrial Duty Pallet Jack, 5,500 lb
Fleet-grade build from an industrial supplier with parts support, 5,500 lb capacity on standard 27 x 48 in forks - the buy-once dock jack.

Which one should you buy?

  • Buy the Global Industrial 5,500 lb for daily dock duty with parts support.
  • Buy the NORTHSKY standard for light-duty receiving at the lowest fleet cost.
  • Buy the Global Industrial 6,600 lb where dense freight (drums, tile, paper) is normal.
  • Buy a narrow-fork NORTHSKY 21 in for half pallets and tight trailer noses.
  • Buy the pallet jack wheel chock for every jack you own - it parks the machine dead.

Why comparing a manual pallet jack on capacity will not help you

Short answer: nine of the twelve jacks are rated exactly 5,500 lb. The number you instinctively sort by is the one that cannot tell them apart.

Across the whole lineup the capacities are 5,500 lb on nine units, 6,600 lb on one, and 2,200 lb on the two mini jacks. So for three quarters of this page, capacity is a constant. The spec that actually varies is fork width, and fork width is what decides whether the jack fits your pallets at all:

  • 27 in standard (seven units) — the GMA 48 x 40 pallet fit, which is most freight in North America.
  • 21 in narrow pallet jack (three units) — half pallets, Euro-style skids, tight trailer noses and close aisles.
  • 15 in mini pallet jack (two units, 2,200 lb) — small crates and light skids, and the only class here that will turn in a genuinely cramped stockroom.

A jack that is too wide simply will not enter the pallet. No amount of capacity compensates. Measure the pallets you actually receive before you compare anything else — and if you receive a mix, the narrow fork enters both while the standard fork enters only one.

Four of these sixteen are wheel chocks, not jacks

The price split is exact: every chock is under seventy-five dollars, every jack is over two hundred and ninety. There is nothing in between, so sorting this collection low-to-high puts four non-jacks at the top of the list before the first jack appears.

That is not a fault in the lineup — a pallet jack chock belongs at every dock door, and the reason is specific: a loaded jack that starts rolling on a dock plate or inside a trailer is extremely hard to stop by hand, and the trailer itself can creep away from the dock as weight shifts. The chock is what stops both. But it is a twenty-dollar accessory, not a budget pallet jack.

How to choose

Fork size decides pallet fit

27 x 48 in forks are the GMA-standard fit; 21 in narrow forks enter half pallets and turn in tight aisles. Measure your most common pallet before buying anything unusual.

Capacity with margin

5,500 lb covers nearly all mixed freight; buy the 6,600 lb class if dense loads are routine. The jack's rating must exceed the heaviest skid, not the average.

Wheel material

Polyurethane steer wheels and load rollers are the quiet, floor-friendly default; nylon rolls easier on rough concrete but louder. Check the listing - it is usually the only spec difference between similar jacks.

Dock discipline

Chock the trailer, check the dock plate rating, lower forks when parked, and never ride the jack.

Step-by-step operation - inspection, fork insertion, travel, and docks - is covered in how to use a pallet jack.

Regulatory context

A manual pallet jack is not a powered industrial truck, and that single fact decides what does and does not apply to it.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 — the standard that requires formal operator training, evaluation and certification — applies to powered industrial trucks. A hand-pumped jack has no power source, so 1910.178 does not attach and no operator card is required. ⚠ That changes the moment the jack is electric: a powered walkie IS a powered industrial truck, certification applies in full, and nothing on this page is one.

What does apply is 29 CFR 1910.176 — materials handling and storage. It requires aisles and passageways kept clear and in good repair, and stored material stable and secure against sliding or collapse. ⭐ No certification requirement is not the same as no training requirement: the injuries here come from dock edges, unchocked trailers, uneven dock plates and pulling a loaded jack downhill, and none of those are prevented by a card.

The other real hazard is the operator's back. Breakaway — the force to start a loaded jack moving — is the highest of the trip, and pulling loads the shoulder and spine far more than pushing. NIOSH publishes the push/pull research and our NIOSH lifting equation reference covers the related model. Push where the route allows it, keep the load in front of you, and treat any ramp as a reason to reposition rather than to pull harder. Safety-toe footwear matters here for the obvious reason — a 5,500 lb wheel does not care about a sneaker.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a license to use a manual pallet jack?

No - OSHA's powered-industrial-truck certification covers powered trucks; a manual jack needs training in practice, not a card. Electric pallet jacks do fall under the powered rules.

What size pallet jack fits a standard pallet?

27 x 48 in forks fit the 48 x 40 GMA pallet that dominates US freight. That is the size to buy unless you know your pallets are non-standard.

How much can a manual pallet jack lift?

The models here publish 5,500 to 6,600 lb capacities - hydraulics lift the skid a few inches for transport, not for stacking. For lifting to height you need different equipment entirely.

Why is one 5,500 lb jack the listed price and another the listed price?

Build quality, hydraulics, and parts support. The Global Industrial unit is a fleet product with a supply chain behind it; the value-priced imports publish the same capacity with less track record. Both are quoted with their live ratings in our table.

Narrow forks or standard?

Standard unless your aisles, trailer noses, or half pallets say otherwise - the narrow NORTHSKY exists for exactly those cases.

What maintenance does a pallet jack need?

Hydraulic oil top-ups, occasional bleed, and wheel replacement as they flat-spot - all listed in the manuals. A jack that will not hold height needs a seal kit, not a replacement.

Can a pallet jack work on gravel or rough ground?

No - small polyurethane load rollers need smooth, hard floor. Outside the building, that load belongs on a hand truck or equipment with real wheels.

What is the wheel chock for?

The pallet jack chock parks the jack itself so it cannot roll on a grade, and trailer chocks from the cargo control collection stop trailer creep during loading - both belong at a dock.

Electric or manual pallet jack?

Electric earns its 4x price where runs are long, loads run heavy all day, or the operator count is high - it also brings OSHA powered-truck training requirements. For a receiving door and a stockroom, manual wins on cost and simplicity.

Are any of these electric pallet jacks?

No. All twelve jacks here are manual, hand-pumped units. ⚠ That is not just a feature difference — an electric pallet jack is a powered industrial truck under OSHA 1910.178 and requires documented operator training, evaluation and certification. A manual jack does not. If you need powered, buy it from a dealer who will handle the training obligation with it.

Why are two of these rated only 2,200 lb?

Those are the two mini jacks, on 15 in forks about 31.5 in long. They are built for small crates, light skids and cramped stockrooms where a 27 in standard jack simply will not turn. ⚠ They are not underpowered versions of the standard jacks — they are a different size class, and the lower rating comes with the smaller frame that lets them fit.

Should I buy on capacity or fork width?

Fork width, almost always. Nine of the twelve jacks here are rated identically at 5,500 lb, so capacity cannot separate them — while a jack that is too wide will not enter your pallet at all. Measure the pallets you actually receive: 27 in fits the GMA 48 x 40 standard, 21 in narrow enters half pallets and both, 15 in mini handles small crates.

How do I move a pallet jack between buildings?

Strapped upright in a truck or trailer with rated tie-downs through the frame, forks down. They are 150-250 lb machines; use a liftgate or ramp.

Our methodology: what is on this page, and what it cannot do

We counted this collection against the storefront and read all sixteen listing titles before describing it, and two counts changed the page. ⚠ An earlier version described three groups; there are four. The two mini 2,200 lb jacks were present in the grid and absent from the copy, so they are now named and explained. And the capacity range is 2,200 to 6,600 lb rather than the narrower band this page used to imply. We also state the split plainly: four of the sixteen listings are wheel chocks, every one under seventy-five dollars against a jack floor near three hundred, because sorting by price otherwise puts four accessories ahead of the first jack. We judge attributes from listing titles and variant data only, never from shared descriptive copy that repeats across product pages, and we note the internal product-type field reads the same for every item and cannot sort them. Capacities, fork dimensions and wheel materials are the manufacturers' published figures quoted as listed — we do not load-test jacks. ⚠ What we will not do is tell you a manual jack needs an operator certification it does not need, or let you assume the reverse about a powered one: 1910.178 attaches to powered trucks and not to these, and that distinction is the buyer's to carry.
