Janitorial Equipment & Floor Machines
The powered and wheeled layer of facility care: janitorial carts, commercial vacuums (backpack, upright, wet/dry), floor machines, and carpet extractors — the equipment that turns supplies into programs. Every machine here is also an ergonomics or slip-hazard decision: carts carry what backs shouldn't, baffled buckets and trained rotary work keep water where it belongs. Real Amazon pricing from $135 carts to the $2,099 contract-scale extractor.

How to choose
Build the core first. Cart, bucket, upright, wet/dry — the four machines every route needs before any specialty purchase. Then add by program: backpacks when route speed matters, floor machines when finish maintenance goes quarterly, extractors when carpet care comes in-house.
Every machine has a safety spec. Rotary training and eye protection for slurry, hearing protection on long extractor runs, GFCI cords out of water, signs posted through every wet process, and harness fit on backpacks as back-injury prevention. The task-by-task table is in the custodial worker safety hub; wet processes follow the stripping guide's discipline. Full department: janitorial & facility safety; fleet quotes via bulk & business orders.
Janitorial equipment FAQ
What equipment does a basic custodial route need?
A cart (everything rides, nothing is carried), a splash-controlled mop bucket, an upright or backpack vacuum, and a wet/dry vac for recovery work. That four-machine core covers 90% of routes; floor machines and extractors join as programs mature.
Backpack or upright vacuum?
Backpacks roughly double coverage per hour and win open floorplates and route work — that's why contract cleaners standardized on ProTeam. Uprights win spot work, stairs-adjacent areas, and fleets where any-operator simplicity matters. Many programs run both.
Why do ProTeam backpacks cost $500+?
Harness ergonomics, HEPA-class filtration options, and a parts/bags ecosystem that keeps units alive for a decade. The $300 import class works; the difference shows up in year three and in operator backs — harness fit is injury prevention.
What's a floor machine actually for?
Scrubbing worn finish, buffing gloss back, and prepping floors between refinish cycles — it's what turns finish chemistry into a maintained program instead of an annual re-strip. Rotary machines need trained hands: they torque hard and throw slurry.
Extractor vs carpet cleaner rental?
At commercial frequency (quarterly common areas, monthly high-traffic), owning a BG10-class unit pays out inside a year against rentals — and the machine is there for the spill that can't wait a weekend.
What safety rules apply to powered floor equipment?
Training per machine, GFCI-protected cords out of standing water, eye protection for slurry work, hearing protection for extended burnisher/extractor runs, and signage the entire time floors are wet. The custodial safety hub carries the task table.
Why does the Executive cart have a locking cabinet?
Chemical custody: HazCom thinking extends to who can reach the products between rooms. Hospitality and healthcare specs increasingly require secured chemicals on public floors — the locking cabinet is that requirement on casters.
Wet/dry vac vs mop for water recovery?
Volume: a mop handles a spill; a 16-gallon wet/dry recovers a strip cycle, a flooded restroom, or an extractor mishap. It's the recovery half of every wet process in this department — no floor program should run without one.
How do I size equipment to my facility?
By square footage and traffic: under ~20k sq ft, the four-machine core; add a floor machine when finish maintenance becomes quarterly; add an extractor when carpet exceeds what a prosumer unit covers in a shift. Buy the route you have.
Do these machines need special power?
Everything here runs standard 120V — the 18-inch extractor included per its listing. Cord management is the real electrical hazard: GFCI protection and cords out of walk paths and water.
