Which jobsite power source fits the work?
Short answer: it depends far less on wattage than on where the work is happening. A generator is the highest-output option and the only one that produces carbon monoxide, so it can never run inside. An extension cord moves existing power to where you need it and its whole risk lives in gauge and length. A battery power station produces no exhaust at all, which makes it the only source of the three that belongs in an enclosed space. Decide the location first, then the watts.

Why does carbon monoxide dominate the generator decision?
Because it is the hazard that actually kills generator users, and it gives no warning. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, it binds to hemoglobin far more readily than oxygen does, and the early symptoms โ headache, dizziness, nausea โ read like fatigue or flu. People have died in attached garages with the door open, in basements, and on porches, because "partially enclosed" is enough. All eleven generators in this collection carry an automatic CO shutoff โ a sensor that kills the engine when CO builds up around it. That is genuinely the most important safety development in portable generators in decades, and it is worth having.
It is also not permission to run one indoors. A shutoff reduces harm when something has already gone wrong; it does not make an enclosed space safe, it can fail, and it does nothing about the CO already accumulated when it trips. What certification should a CO shutoff carry?
Two standards define this feature, and knowing them separates a tested implementation from a marketing line: ANSI/PGMA G300 and UL 2201. Both specify how a CO shutoff system must detect and respond, and a generator certified to either has had that system tested rather than merely fitted.
Look for the marking on the unit or in the manufacturer's specification. None of the listings in this collection currently states which standard its shutoff is certified to โ the feature is described, the certification is not โ so if that distinction matters to your procurement, verify it with the manufacturer before ordering. A CO shutoff is also not a substitute for monitoring the space people are actually working in. If a generator is running anywhere near an occupied structure, a carbon monoxide monitor inside is the control that protects the people, not the machine โ see OSHA CO monitoring requirements.
How do you size an extension cord?
Two numbers, and most people get the relationship backwards. Gauge (AWG) runs inverse โ a lower number is a thicker conductor, so 12 AWG is heavier than 14 AWG. And length works against you: the longer the run, the more voltage drops along it.
Undersized cord plus long run produces voltage drop, and the consequences are not subtle. The tool receives less voltage than it needs, so a motor draws more current to compensate, runs hotter and dies early. The cord itself heats up along its whole length โ which is why an overheating cord is a fire risk rather than just an inconvenience, and why a coiled cord under load is worse still because it cannot shed that heat.
The practical rule: pick the gauge for the combination of amp draw and length, not for either alone. A cord that is fine at 25 feet may be undersized at 100 feet for the same tool. Where a cord is permanently deployed, a reel keeps it off the ground and out of the trip path โ the full range is in extension cords and reels.
Outdoor and jobsite use adds one more requirement: the cord must be rated for it. Damaged insulation on a wet site is a shock hazard, so inspect before each use and take damaged cords out of service rather than taping them. When is a battery power station the right answer?
Whenever the work is inside, and more often than people expect outside too.
A power station is a battery with an inverter. It produces no exhaust of any kind, which means it is the only source in this collection that can legitimately run in an enclosed or partially enclosed space โ indoor finishing work, basements, occupied buildings, anywhere a generator is simply not an option. It is also silent, which matters on noise-restricted sites and in occupied premises.
The trade is real. Capacity is finite and measured in watt-hours, so when it is empty you recharge rather than refuel, and high-draw tools drain it fast. Check the continuous output rating against your largest load, not just the total capacity โ a station with plenty of stored energy may still be unable to start a motor that demands a high surge. What pairs with jobsite power?
Three things worth having alongside, because the equipment itself does not cover them.
A carbon monoxide monitor in any occupied space near a running generator. The generator's own shutoff protects the generator's surroundings; a monitor indoors protects the people. See CO detectors and best carbon monoxide detector.
Ground-fault protection. Temporary power on a construction site needs GFCI protection or an assured equipment grounding conductor program under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.404, which also covers temporary wiring generally.
Hearing protection near an open-frame generator, which is loud enough to matter over a full shift. Inverter models run considerably quieter, which is a genuine reason to choose one beyond fuel economy.

We counted this collection against the storefront rather than trusting the heading: 29 products that are exactly the union of the three child collections, with nothing outside them. We checked the CO shutoff claim in the page's own description against every generator's title and body rather than skimming titles โ a title-only read would have suggested only two of eleven had the feature, and it would have been wrong. What we could not verify is certification: none of the listings states whether its shutoff meets ANSI/PGMA G300 or UL 2201, so we name the standards and tell you to check rather than implying the products carry them. We do not size cords or specify wattage for you, because both depend on the tools and distances on your job.
Jobsite Power FAQ
Can you run a portable generator in a garage with the door open?
No. A partially enclosed space still accumulates carbon monoxide, and open-door garage running is a recognized cause of fatal poisonings. Generators run outdoors only, well away from doors, windows and vents.
Does a CO shutoff make a generator safe indoors?
No. A shutoff reduces harm once CO has already built up โ it is a backstop, not permission. It can fail, and it does nothing about the CO present when it trips. The outdoors-only rule is unchanged.
What is ANSI/PGMA G300 and UL 2201?
