CO Detectors — Carbon Monoxide Alarms for Home and Vehicle

Carbon monoxide is called the "silent killer" because it provides no warning to human senses — no color, no odor, no taste. Every year, more than 400 Americans die from unintentional, non-fire-related CO poisoning, and thousands more are hospitalized. The sources are everywhere in modern life: gas furnaces, water heaters, stoves, fireplaces, portable generators, charcoal grills, gasoline-powered tools, and vehicle exhaust all produce carbon monoxide when combustion occurs in confined or poorly ventilated spaces. A properly placed and functioning carbon monoxide detector is the only reliable early warning system for CO buildup before concentrations reach dangerous levels. Our CO detector collection includes plug-in, battery-powered, hardwired, and smart models for residential and commercial applications.

Carbon monoxide poisoning works by binding to hemoglobin in the blood, displacing oxygen and forming carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), which cannot carry oxygen to tissues. Symptoms of early CO poisoning — headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, shortness of breath, and confusion — are frequently dismissed as flu symptoms or fatigue, especially because CO exposure often occurs while sleeping. This makes CO detectors that activate at lower concentrations particularly valuable: UL 2034-listed detectors are required to alarm within 15-50 minutes at 150 ppm CO and within 4-15 minutes at 400 ppm, providing warning before symptoms become incapacitating.

CO detector technology uses electrochemical sensors that generate a small electrical current proportional to CO concentration. Unlike ionization-based smoke detectors, CO detectors require active power to run their sensors continuously. This means battery-powered models must have reliable batteries that are checked regularly, while hardwired models with battery backup ensure continuous monitoring even during power outages — when portable generators running outdoors (but too close to the building) are a major CO source. The sensor chemistry degrades over time, and CO detector manufacturers specify replacement intervals of 5-7 years depending on the model.

Installation location significantly affects CO detector performance. CO is approximately the same density as air, meaning it mixes throughout a room rather than stratifying at ceiling or floor level. NFPA 720 and CO detector manufacturers recommend installing CO alarms at breathing height — approximately 5 feet from the floor — in locations where CO would most likely accumulate: near sleeping areas, adjacent to attached garages, and near fuel-burning appliances. Every level of a home should have at least one CO detector, and one should be within 10 feet of each sleeping area so that occupants are awakened if CO levels rise while sleeping.

Smart CO detectors add WiFi connectivity that enables smartphone notifications when alarms trigger, allowing remote monitoring when residents are away from home. This is particularly valuable for vacation properties, rental units, and homes where elderly or disabled occupants may not be able to quickly respond to an alarm. Smart CO alarms can also provide historical data on low-level CO events that fall below alarm thresholds but may indicate developing combustion appliance problems before they reach hazardous concentrations.

Combination smoke and CO alarms simplify installation and ensure both hazards are covered from a single device, which is particularly practical in bedrooms where space near the ceiling is limited. Vehicle CO alarms protect against the significant risk of CO buildup in enclosed garages, during tailgate idling in cold weather, or in camper van living situations. Our complete CO detector collection covers residential, commercial, and vehicle applications with models from leading brands including Kidde, First Alert, Google Nest, and Honeywell to match every monitoring need and budget.
