Corded Ear Plugs — Tethered Foam & Reusable, NRR 20 to 33

What are the best corded ear plugs?
Short answer: Corded ear plugs keep the pair joined by a cord so they are not lost, dropped into product, or mismatched — ideal for in-and-out use. The Moldex 6900 Pura-Fit Corded (NRR 33) is the comfortable foam standard, the Howard Leight MAX-30 (NRR 30) is the rugged workhorse, and the washable Moldex 6405 Rockets (NRR 27) suits daily reuse. Prefer no cord? See cordless ear plugs.
Corded Ear Plugs (2026)
Corded ear plugs — also searched as ear plugs with cord, ear plugs with string, ear plugs on cord or simply earplugs corded — join the two plugs with a cord worn around the neck. That cord solves three problems: plugs do not get lost between tasks, a dropped plug cannot disappear into product (important in food and assembly work), and workers always have both halves of a pair. Corded plugs come in the same materials as the rest of the category — foam and washable reusable — so the cord is a format choice, not a protection choice. This is the tethered counterpart to cordless ear plugs; both sit in the hearing protection silo. Shop by material in foam and reusable ear plugs.
Editor's pick — Moldex 6900 Pura-Fit Corded
Maximum NRR 33 foam protection with a cord for in-and-out work: low insertion pressure for all-day comfort, with the cord keeping the pair together between tasks. (We earn an Amazon commission on the Amazon link below; it never affects ranking.)

How to choose corded ear plugs
When the cord earns its keep
Choose corded when workers move in and out of noise, when a dropped plug is a contamination risk (food, beverage, pharma, assembly), or when you simply lose too many uncorded plugs. The cord keeps the pair around the neck, ready to reinsert. If workers wear plugs continuously and a cord would only snag, choose cordless ear plugs instead.
Foam or reusable
Corded foam is cheapest and highest-NRR; corded reusable plugs cost less per use for a daily wearer. The cord is available on both.
Rating and fit — the range is wider than "high-NRR foam"
All 93 plugs in this collection publish a rating, and they run NRR 20 to 33. The spread matters because a cord is a retention feature, not a protection feature, and it is fitted to plugs across the whole attenuation range: 17 plugs are NRR 27, thirteen are 33, twelve each at 25 and 32, eleven at 26 and ten at 24, with the rest scattered from 20 to 31. Thirty-four of the 93 sit below 27, so "corded means maximum protection" is not a safe assumption — read the rating on the plug you are actually buying. A cord does not change attenuation; fit does. See the NRR explainer.
Derate before you trust the number
NRR is a laboratory figure measured under ANSI S3.19 with trained fitting, so real-world attenuation is lower. OSHA subtracts 7 dB from the NRR before applying it to an A-weighted exposure; NIOSH derates by device type — 25% for earmuffs, 50% for formable foam earplugs, and 70% for all other earplug types. A plug rated NRR 27 in a 95 dBA area gives roughly 95 − (27 − 7) / 2 ≈ 85 dBA by the OSHA method — right at the action level, not comfortably under it. Run your own numbers with the Hearing Protection NRR Calculator before you commit a plug to a written program.
Food and contamination control
In food and pharma, pair a cord with a metal-detectable plug so a lost plug is both retained and detectable — see metal detectable ear plugs.
Regulatory context
U.S. workplace noise is governed by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95: a 90 dBA permissible exposure limit (8-hour TWA) and an 85 dBA action level that triggers a hearing conservation program. Corded plugs are a compliant control where their NRR meets your exposure — see our guide to OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 hearing conservation. Every one of the 93 plugs here publishes a U.S.-required EPA/ANSI Noise Reduction Rating in its listing — we checked all 93, which is not true of every hearing category, so you can compare ratings here without chasing datasheets.

Frequently asked questions
What are corded ear plugs?
Ear plugs joined by a cord worn around the neck, so the pair stays together, is not lost between tasks, and cannot be dropped into product. Available in foam and reusable.
Are corded ear plugs better than uncorded?
For in-and-out use and contamination control, yes; for continuous wear where a cord would snag, uncorded is better. See cordless ear plugs.
Does the cord reduce protection?
No — the cord does not change the NRR. Attenuation depends on the plug material and fit, not the cord.
What NRR do corded ear plugs offer?
Measured across this collection, NRR 20 to 33 — the same spread as uncorded plugs, because the cord is a retention feature and does not affect attenuation. NRR 27 is the commonest single rating here and 34 of the 93 plugs are rated below it. The maximum-protection corded foam plugs are in NRR 33 ear plugs.
Are corded ear plugs reusable?
Both — corded foam is single-use; corded flanged plugs like the Moldex 6405 Rockets are washable.
Why use corded plugs in food plants?
The cord retains a dropped plug; pair it with a detectable plug for full HACCP control — see metal detectable ear plugs.
Can the cord get caught in machinery?
It can — that is exactly why continuous-wear workers near rotating equipment often choose cordless ear plugs instead.
What is the highest-NRR corded ear plug?
NRR 33 corded foam such as the Moldex 6900 Pura-Fit Corded.
How do I insert corded foam plugs?
Roll thin, pull the ear up and back, insert deep, and hold while it expands — the same technique as uncorded foam.
Does OSHA require corded ear plugs?
No — OSHA requires adequate protection, not a specific format. Corded is a practical choice for retention, not a regulatory one. See the hearing conservation guide.
What is the difference between corded ear plugs and ear plugs with a string?
Nothing — they are the same product under different names, and corded hearing protection is the umbrella term for all of them. "Corded ear plugs", "ear plugs with cord", "ear plugs with string", "ear plugs on cord" and "earplugs corded" all describe a pair joined behind the neck. The earplug cord itself comes in two styles: cloth cords are softer against the neck and quieter against a collar, while plastic cords wipe clean more easily and suit wet or dirty work. Neither style affects the rating.
Do I get one pair or a box when I buy corded ear plugs?
Check the listing carefully, because this category mixes formats. Most items here are boxes of 50 or 100 pairs sized for a crew, and five are dispenser stations — Moldex PlugStation and EcoStation units holding 100 to 150 pairs for mounting at an entrance. Those are bulk supply, not a single pair. If you want one pair to try, look for a listing that says so rather than a pair count.
Are corded ear plugs allowed near rotating machinery?
Treat it as a site-specific decision, not a product one. A cord is an entanglement path around lathes, drills, conveyors and shaft ends, and OSHA machine-guarding rules exist precisely because loose items get drawn in. Many plants run corded plugs everywhere except designated rotating-equipment areas, and use cordless ear plugs there. If your hazard assessment has not addressed it, that is the gap to close before choosing a cord style.
Why pair a cord with a metal-detectable plug?
Because the two controls cover different failure modes. The cord keeps a plug from leaving the worker in the first place; detectability catches the plug that does get loose before it reaches a customer. Food and pharmaceutical lines commonly require both, which is why several plugs here appear in both this collection and metal detectable ear plugs. Neither control substitutes for the other.

Every count and rating above was read from the 93 products actually in this collection, not carried from a template: we checked each listing for a published NRR (all 93 have one), for cord style, and for whether the item is a single pair, a box or a dispenser station. Ratings are quoted as published under EPA/ANSI S3.19; we apply no derating of our own and we show you how to apply the OSHA and NIOSH corrections yourself. Guidance follows OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 and NIOSH hearing-loss prevention material, both cited below. WC Safety is an independent review and comparison site — we do not sell or ship products, and we earn a commission when you buy through an Amazon link.
