Self-Retracting Lifelines

Self Retracting Lifeline Guide — Class 1 and Class 2 SRLs

Which self retracting lifeline matches your tie-off?

Short answer: anchor position decides the class. Of the thirty listings here — 3M (12), Honeywell (8), FallTech (5), MSA (3), Guardian (2) — nineteen carry ANSI Z359.14 Class 1 tags for overhead anchorage and eleven carry Class 2 tags for foot-level and leading-edge tie-off. A retractable lanyard that locks like a seatbelt beats a fixed lanyard wherever clearance is tight; ranked alternatives live in the lanyard buyer’s guide and the broader equipment guide.

Editor's pick — 3M Protecta Rebel series
The volume-standard Class 1 SRL — galvanized cable, fast lock-up, and the price that put retractables on ordinary jobsites. Read the full listing.

Class 1 vs Class 2 on this shelf

ANSI Z359.14 class Count Tie-off Use case
Class 1 19 Overhead anchorage General elevated work with overhead structure
Class 2 11 Foot-level / leading edge Steel erection, deck work, tie-off below the D-ring

The 2021 revision of ANSI Z359.14 replaced the old Class A/B vocabulary with Class 1 and Class 2 — every listing on this shelf is tagged in the current Class 1/Class 2 language, and this page uses only that vocabulary.

Every listing on this shelf

What this page no longer claims

An earlier version described MSA V-SHOCK EDGE units this shelf does not carry and called these devices NIOSH-certified — NIOSH certifies respirators, not fall-protection hardware. The thirty listings above carry ANSI Z359.14 and OSHA-duty language on their own records, and that is what this page now reflects.

How do you choose an SRL?

Match three things: the class to your anchor position, the line length to your working area, and the line material to the environment — web for weight-sensitive overhead work, galvanized or stainless cable for edges and abrasion. All thirty records are also cross-listed on the master lanyards and lifelines shelf; anchors live on fall protection anchor points.

What does SRL ownership actually involve?

More than a lanyard. The retract mechanism, brake pack and line all live inside a housing you cannot see into, so the inspection regime does the seeing for you: a worker check before each use — full extension and retraction, lock-up under a sharp tug, housing and hook condition — plus a documented competent-person inspection on the manufacturer’s cycle, and factory recertification where the manual requires it. A unit that retracts sluggishly or pays out gritty is telling you the drum spring or line is going; pull it from service before it tests itself in a fall.

Budget for the swing radius too. A drum SRL anchored 20 feet up does not make the whole roof safe — work too far off-plumb and lock-up turns the fall into a pendulum. The discipline that makes Class 1 devices safe is the same one that makes anchors safe: keep the line as close to vertical as the job allows, and treat the listed working radius in each manual as a limit, not a suggestion.

Retrofit reality — sharing SRLs across a crew

Drum SRLs mounted at an anchor are naturally shared serially — one worker at a time, clipped and unclipped as tasks rotate — and that pattern is fine as long as each user runs the pre-use check personally rather than trusting the last shift’s. Personal dorsal-mounted units are the opposite: they ride one harness, get fitted to one worker’s clearance math, and swapping them casually between bodies is how a Class 1 unit ends up tied off at foot level by someone who never read the label. Assign personal SRLs by name, log them like harnesses, and the fleet stays inspectable instead of anonymous.

Our methodology

We pulled all thirty live records, split them by their own ANSI Z359.14 Class 1/Class 2 tags, and removed a false NIOSH-certification claim and vendor-line copy the records do not support. Fall-protection duties come from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.502 (construction) and OSHA 1910.140 (general industry), with fall-injury context from NIOSH falls prevention. We do not drop-test equipment and hold no safety certification.

Why trust this page

WC Safety is an independent review site with no products of its own — nothing here is stocked, warehoused or shipped by us. Purchase links go to Amazon and earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you; no manufacturer pays for placement. This page was rebuilt after an audit found its earlier copy described a vendor’s product lines this shelf does not carry — in fall protection, copy that oversells a catalog is a safety defect, so every claim below is tied to the live listings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a self retracting lifeline?

A drum-wound line — web or cable — that pays out and retracts as you move and locks under the sudden acceleration of a fall, like a seatbelt. Arrest distance is far shorter than a fixed shock-absorbing lanyard.

SRL or shock-absorbing lanyard — which should I use?

With limited clearance below the work surface, an SRL — it arrests in a few feet where a lanyard system needs roughly 18–19. With generous clearance and a tight budget, a lanyard still does the job.

What is the difference between Class 1 and Class 2?

Class 1 SRLs are rated for overhead anchorage only. Class 2 adds foot-level tie-off and leading-edge falls, with reinforced line and heavier energy management. The class is on each listing’s tags.

Did SRL classes used to be called A and B?

Yes — the pre-2021 standard used Class A/B based on arrest distance. ANSI Z359.14-2021 replaced that with Class 1/Class 2 based on tie-off location, which is what every listing here uses.

Are these devices NIOSH-certified?

No — and no SRL is. NIOSH certifies respiratory protection. Fall-protection hardware is designed to ANSI Z359.14 and used under OSHA 1926.502/1910.140 duties.

Cable or web line — which is better?

Cable resists abrasion, sparks and edges; web is lighter and kinder to overhead work. Class 2 leading-edge units are predominantly cable for a reason.

Can I use an SRL horizontally?

Only a Class 2 unit rated for it, anchored per its manual — a horizontal fall over an edge loads the line across steel or concrete, which is precisely what Class 1 devices are not rated to survive.

How often do SRLs need inspection?

Before each use by the worker, at least annually by a competent person, and by the factory per the manufacturer’s schedule. After any arrest, the unit retires until factory-recertified.

What is a personal SRL versus a leading-edge SRL?

Personal SRLs (like the Nano-Lok class) mount on the harness dorsal D-ring; leading-edge versions add Class 2 rating for foot-level tie-off. The eleven Class 2 listings above are the edge-rated subset.

Which length should I buy?

The shortest line that covers the working radius — 6–11 ft personal units for tight work, 20–65 ft drum units for open structure. Longer line means more swing-fall exposure to manage.

Do SRLs work for two workers?

One worker per unit, always. Multi-worker jobs need one SRL each, and the anchor must be rated per attached worker.

Where do the rest of the system parts live?

Anchors on fall protection anchor points, fixed connectors on lanyards and lifelines, and complete bundles on fall protection kits.
