Uvex Safety Glasses by Honeywell

Uvex Safety Glasses by Honeywell — Anti-Fog, Sealed, and OTG Styles

Uvex safety glasses are manufactured by Honeywell Safety Products and are available across a range of frame styles — standard wraparound, foam-sealed, over-the-glasses (OTG), and the Skyper with SCT-Orange blue-light-filtering lens. Every model is ANSI Z87.1+ rated. The Uvex lineup is known for its Uvextreme and Dura-Streme anti-fog coatings, which provide durable fogging resistance in industrial environments. The Seismic (foam-sealed) and Tirade (sealed) models provide a tighter face seal than open safety glasses for dusty or chemical-vapor environments that don't require full goggle protection. Uvex Anti-Fog Coating Systems: Uvextreme vs. Dura-Streme vs. HydroShield

Uvex uses three proprietary anti-fog systems across its safety glasses and goggles lineup. Uvextreme is a permanent anti-fog coating applied to the lens surface — it's Uvex's most durable formulation for safety glasses, designed to withstand cleaning and minor abrasion better than standard AF coatings. Dura-Streme combines an anti-fog layer with a hard-coat for scratch resistance, making it the best choice for environments where both fogging and surface abrasion are concerns. HydroShield is primarily used on Uvex goggles and provides a hydrophobic coating that repels liquid rather than absorbing it. For safety glasses specifically, Uvextreme and Dura-Streme variants provide the most durable day-to-day anti-fog performance. The Genesis and Avatar are both available in Uvextreme AF variants. The Seismic and Tirade sealed glasses add a foam gasket to the anti-fog lens, addressing both fogging and perimeter infiltration simultaneously.

ANSI Z87.1+ and Sealed Safety Glasses: When to Use Each

All Uvex safety glasses in this collection carry ANSI/ISEA Z87.1+ certification. The standard Z87.1+ open safety glasses — Genesis, Millennia, Avatar, Protégé, Hypershock — provide impact and UV protection with an open frame. They are appropriate for flying particle hazards (grinding, chipping, sawing) and UV exposure. The Seismic (S0600) and Tirade (S4040) add a foam or rubber gasket around the perimeter of the lens, providing additional protection against dust, wind, and light chemical vapors that could enter around the frame edges. Neither model is a chemical splash goggle — for direct liquid splash hazard, use an indirect-vent goggle from the safety goggles collection. The Skyper (S1933X) uses an SCT-Orange lens that filters short-wave blue light — this is a specialized application for workers operating near lasers, UV sources, or computer displays, in addition to providing standard ANSI Z87.1+ impact protection. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 governs eye protection requirements in general industry; 1926.102 for construction.

Frequently Asked Questions — Uvex Safety Glasses

Is Uvex the same as Honeywell?
Uvex is a brand owned and manufactured by Honeywell Safety Products. Honeywell acquired Uvex's safety products division and manufactures Uvex-branded safety eyewear alongside its other PPE brands including Howard Leight (hearing protection) and North (respirators). The Uvex brand name is retained because of its established reputation in safety eyewear. You may see products labeled "Uvex by Honeywell" — this is the same product line.
What is the Uvex SCT-Orange lens in the Skyper and what is it for?
SCT-Orange (Spectrum Control Technology Orange) is a Uvex lens tint that filters short-wavelength blue light while enhancing contrast in certain lighting conditions. It was originally developed for indoor shooting ranges to enhance target contrast, and is also used by workers exposed to high-intensity UV or blue-light sources. The Skyper with SCT-Orange lens is ANSI Z87.1+ rated for impact protection. It is not a substitute for laser safety eyewear in laser-hazard environments — laser eyewear must be rated for the specific laser wavelength and power level.
What is the difference between the Seismic and the Tirade sealed glasses?
Both the Seismic (S0600) and Tirade (S4040) are foam-sealed safety glasses that provide a closer face seal than open-frame safety glasses. The Seismic uses a soft foam gasket around the full perimeter of the lens; the Tirade uses a softer flexible rubber/foam combination that conforms more readily to facial contours. The Seismic is the heavier-duty sealed option; the Tirade is lighter and more comfortable for all-day wear. Neither model is a chemical splash goggle — they reduce but do not eliminate exposure from liquid splash or airborne dust infiltration from the top or sides.
Does the Uvex Astro OTG 3001 fit over large prescription frames?
The Astro OTG 3001 (S2500C) has a generous frame opening designed to accommodate most standard rectangular and oval prescription frames. Very large frames — particularly large full-rim or aviator-style frames — may not fit under the OTG opening without pressure on the prescription frame arms. Uvex recommends measuring prescription frame width against the OTG inner opening before ordering if frame size is borderline. The Astro OTG 3001 is one of Uvex's most popular OTG models for its combination of coverage and comfortable fit.
How durable is the Uvextreme anti-fog coating compared to standard coatings?
Uvex markets Uvextreme as a permanent anti-fog coating — it is designed to last the life of the lens under normal industrial use without degrading. Standard anti-fog coatings on budget safety glasses typically last 3–6 months with regular use and cleaning before performance degrades noticeably. Uvextreme coatings are designed to resist abrasion from wiping and cleaning better than standard hydrophilic coatings. To maximize coating life, clean with lens-safe spray and a microfiber cloth — paper towels and dry wiping abrade any lens coating over time.
Can Uvex safety glasses be used for shooting sports?
Yes. Uvex safety glasses are ANSI Z87.1+ rated, which meets the eye protection standard used in most shooting ranges and range safety programs. The Skyper with SCT-Orange lens is specifically popular among indoor range shooters because the orange tint enhances target contrast against typical range backgrounds. The Hypershock's wraparound frame also provides good protection against brass ejection and ricochets. For formal competitive shooting that specifies ANSI Z87.1+ as a minimum, all Uvex models in this collection qualify.
Are Uvex safety glasses suitable for healthcare environments?
Uvex safety glasses that meet ANSI Z87.1+ provide impact protection, but healthcare face protection requirements are typically governed by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030 (Bloodborne Pathogens) and facility infection control policies. For splash protection against blood and body fluids, a sealed goggle or face shield that meets ANSI Z87.1 for splash is required — open safety glasses allow fluid ingress from the top and sides. For low-splash-risk settings like labs or pharmacy with primarily flying particle or chemical drip risks, Uvex safety glasses may be sufficient based on your facility's hazard assessment.
Do all Uvex safety glasses include UV protection?
Yes. All polycarbonate safety glasses, including all Uvex models in this collection, block 99.9% of UVA and UVB radiation as a property of the polycarbonate material itself — no additional UV coating is required. This applies to both clear and tinted lenses. The SCT-Orange lens in the Skyper provides the same UV protection as standard clear polycarbonate while additionally filtering blue light wavelengths.
