WC Safety Editor's Pick - Best Over-the-Glasses Safety Glasses (2026)The Uvex Astro OTG 3001 ranks #4 Best OTG in our Best Safety Glasses (2026) roundup and is the lead OTG recommendation in the Safety Glasses Buyer's Guide (2026). Designed for workers who wear prescription eyewear - Uvextreme anti-fog, ANSI Z87.1+, accommodates most small-to-medium prescription frames.

The Uvex Astro OTG 3001 - Over-Glasses Safety Standard

The Uvex Astro OTG 3001 is an over-the-glasses (OTG) safety frame that allows prescription eyeglass wearers to meet ANSI Z87.1+ eye protection requirements without removing their Rx lenses or purchasing dedicated prescription safety glasses. A wide polycarbonate lens and extended brow bar bridge over most standard prescription frames, while adjustable side temples lock the OTG securely in place over the ears.

Available in clear uvextreme anti-fog and gray hardcoat lens options, the Astro OTG 3001 covers the most common over-glasses use cases: clear lenses for indoor and transition environments where fogging is a concern, and gray hardcoat for outdoor work under bright light.

Lens Options

Lens Transmission Best For SKU
Clear Uvextreme Anti-Fog ~90% Indoor, temperature transitions, humid environments S2500C, S2510C
Gray Hardcoat ~17% Outdoor, bright sunlight, dry environments S2504

ANSI Z87.1+ Compliance and OTG Design

Every Astro OTG 3001 lens carries the Z87+ high-impact mark, satisfying OSHA 1910.133 and 1926.102 requirements for prescription eyeglass wearers in industrial environments. The polycarbonate lens absorbs 99.9% of UV-A and UV-B radiation. The "+" designation confirms survival of the high-velocity steel ball test - not just the basic drop-ball test - making this suitable for grinding, machining, and other high-particle environments.

The OTG frame geometry provides side coverage for most rectangular and oval prescription frames up to approximately 145mm in width. Narrower temple widths (sports-style frames, very narrow Rx frames) may not seat correctly - confirm frame width before ordering for large crews.

Performance Assessment

The uvextreme anti-fog coating on S2500C and S2510C bonds to both lens surfaces rather than applying as a surface wipe - this matters in food processing, cold storage, and health care environments where glasses fog immediately when moving between climate zones. The coating survives cleaning with standard lens wipes and sanitizer spray used in food manufacturing environments.

The brow bar design keeps the OTG off the Rx bridge, reducing pressure on the nose over long shifts. That said, the Astro OTG is not a snug-fitting frame - in high-movement or climbing environments, some users report the frame shifting. For those applications, a head-strap accessory or a different OTG model with a tighter fit is advisable.

Strengths and Limitations

Strengths: permanent anti-fog on clear variants; Z87.1+ dual certification; fits most rectangular Rx frames; lightweight polycarbonate shell; low per-unit cost for crew outfitting.

Limitations: gray lens is hardcoat only (no anti-fog available in tinted version); OTG fit varies by Rx frame width and temple style; no polarized or photochromic variant in this model; side coverage is not sealed (not suitable as a goggle substitute in splash or spray environments).

Recommended Use Cases

The Astro OTG 3001 is best suited for light-manufacturing, assembly, laboratory, healthcare, and food-processing environments where prescription wearers make up a portion of the crew and a standardized OTG solution is preferred over individual prescription inserts. It is not a substitute for splash goggles or full-seal chemical goggles - for liquid splash hazards, use a sealed indirect-vent goggle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What prescription frame sizes fit inside the Astro OTG 3001?

The OTG fits most standard rectangular and oval prescription frames up to approximately 145mm total width. Very wide frames, sports-wrap Rx frames, and frames with thick side temples may not seat correctly. If outfitting a crew, measure the widest frame in use before ordering in bulk - a test pair is recommended.

Is the uvextreme coating on both sides of the lens?

Yes - Uvex uvextreme anti-fog coating is applied to both the inner and outer lens surfaces. The inner surface is more important for over-glasses use because it sits close to the Rx lens, where warm exhaled air tends to accumulate. Dual-side coating extends the fog-free window significantly compared to single-side treatments.

Can non-prescription wearers use the Astro OTG 3001?

Yes. The OTG designation indicates the frame can accommodate prescription lenses, not that it requires them. Non-Rx wearers use the Astro OTG as a standard wraparound safety glass - the lens geometry provides good peripheral coverage for general industrial use.

Does the Astro OTG 3001 meet OSHA requirements for prescription eyeglass wearers?

Yes, when worn correctly over prescription lenses. OSHA 1910.133(b)(3) permits over-glasses protectors when they are designed to fit over Rx frames. The Astro OTG 3001 is specifically designed for this application and carries the Z87+ mark. Document the OTG model and Z87+ rating in your PPE program for compliance records.

How do I clean the uvextreme anti-fog lens?

Use a damp microfiber cloth. Avoid dry wiping (scratches both surfaces), paper towels, and cleaning products containing ammonia or alcohol above 70% - these degrade the anti-fog treatment over time. For field cleaning, a small spray bottle of water plus a lens cloth is the standard approach. The coating is permanent under normal cleaning but not indestructible.

What is the difference between S2500C and S2510C?

Both are clear uvextreme anti-fog lenses. S2500C uses a black frame; S2510C uses a navy or dark frame. Performance and protection level are identical - the difference is frame color for crew or site identification purposes.

Is the Astro OTG 3001 available with a gray anti-fog lens?

Not in the current lineup. S2504 provides a gray tinted lens with hardcoat only. For an anti-fog tinted lens over prescription glasses, alternative OTG models from Uvex or other manufacturers with gray uvextreme should be considered. Contact WC Safety if this is a priority requirement for your program.

How does the Astro OTG 3001 compare to a standard non-OTG safety glass?

The primary difference is the wider bridge and extended brow bar designed to clear an Rx frame. Non-OTG safety glasses sit closer to the face and do not accommodate prescription frames underneath. For non-Rx wearers, a standard Uvex Hypershock or similar wraparound offers a more secure fit. For Rx wearers, the OTG is the correct choice in most environments.

Works great for lab class
I bought these glasses off of Amazon because my college stopped selling them in person and I am glad I did. Not only were these glasses cheaper, but they are a better brand than the one being offered by the university. Some safety notes: these glasses meet the Z87 rating, have solid side shields and a top ledge. Most importantly, they are for use over prescription lenses and thus are extremely wide. Since this is a standard Uvex pair, they have adjustable lens inclination and temple length (the area behind the ear and how much tilt you want on the glasses).Extra side notes: The S2500 (this model) is the black frame, S2510 is the blue frame, S520 is the yellow/black frame, and the S2530 is the red/white/blue frame. These glasses are comfortable, were accepted in my lab class, and protected my lenses as well as my eyes. Came in a well packaged box with instructions and warranty info. Would recommend

Amazing!
With whats going on now, I’ve decided to look for a goggles to use for my job, i always have problem wearing with the googles that’s provided for us because its rubber, i felt my head is becoming so tight. Rubber for the N95 mask. Rubber for the face shield, then the goggles. Too much that i got headache before the end of the shift. And having that face shield , its difficult to insert an iv or draw blood , but this goggles , i am telling you its comfortable, you put over your reading glasses on it , still fits, and No fog, its clear; i even forget that i am wearing one, and i just clean it with mix bleach spray and cold water; then dry up .for me i am comfortable with it with no moisture, but if you feel like those googles with rubber that holds tight makes you feel protected and served its purpose you go for it. this is to each is own, keep yourself safe first especially if you are working for cases dealing with too much secretions. Self safety first.

Well designed over the glasses safety glasses
Well designed over the glasses safety glasses.Good value - works for the intended purpose. Clear lenses and side shield. As a compassions to standard safety glasses note that these sit farther from your face so don’t seem to offer as much protection at the bottom where more typical safety glasses are tighter fitting but this appears to be due to the over the glasses design. Recommend this product.

Decent DIY safety eyewear, but not particularly for healthcare workers
Decent enough safety eyewear for DIY work; certainly not great protection for health care workers--too much leakage. Not particularly comfortable. Corrective eyeglasses do fit underneath, just.

LOVE THEM!
These are EXACTLY what I wanted! I wanted the protection of a face shield without the bulkiness. They are comfortable, and unlike some that "claim" to be anti-fog, these really are anti-fog. They appear to be durable and well made for the money. I like that my eyes are fully protected and, with the addition of my mask, I feel comfortable to be out and about. I ordered 1 pair and as soon as I got them, immediately order 4 more to give to my family!!

Great Glasses for Healthcare Workers
I ordered my coworker and I each a pair of these glasses since we wear prescription lenses in hopes that these would be better than the ones that we had been using at work. The fact that they're MADE IN USA was another reason why I was glad to purchase these. They're extremely comfortable and fit over my glasses with ease (I wear the larger frames due to personal preference, and will attempt to post a picture later of me in them when I get one). The anti-fog thing is also a major plus, as that has been a constant battle with my glasses and other safety glasses since the COVID fiasco started. My coworker enjoys hers as well. She says hers slide a little on her face, but the ends of the legs can slide in/out a little to help with that.
