How to choose

Kit or components? Kits (tripod + winch, sometimes + SRL) are the fast path to a compliant setup and cost less than assembling pieces. Component builds — an 8000140 tripod plus your choice of winch, pulley, and retrieval SRL — make sense when you're standardizing across crews or matching existing hardware.

Winch vs 3-way SRL. The winch positions and retrieves under control; the 3-way SRL arrests a fall instantly, then cranks over to raise the worker. A rescue-ready vertical entry usually runs both: worker on the SRL, winch as the working line. If budget forces one, the 3-way SRL covers the life-safety function.

Certified brands vs import kits. DBI-SALA, MSA, FallTech, Guardian, and Peakworks publish ANSI Z359-family test documentation. Import kits (VEVOR, TRSMIMA) list capacity ratings at a quarter of the price, but certification paperwork varies by listing — verify what your safety program requires before standardizing on them for permit entries.

Do I need the tripod or can I anchor to structure?

A rated tripod (or davit) gives you the overhead point retrieval demands where no rated structure exists — which is most manholes and tanks. Structural anchorage must be rated and positioned for vertical retrieval, not just fall arrest.

Is the gas monitor part of the kit?

Usually not — retrieval kits ship the mechanical chain, and the 4-gas monitor is a separate purchase from the 4-gas shelf. A permit entry needs both before anyone descends.

When does OSHA require a retrieval system for confined space entry?

Under 29 CFR 1910.146(k)(3), retrieval systems are required whenever an authorized entrant enters a permit-required confined space, unless the equipment would increase overall risk or wouldn't contribute to rescue. For vertical entries deeper than 5 feet, a mechanical retrieval device is required.

What's the difference between a winch and a 3-way retrieval SRL?

A winch raises and lowers a worker under control but provides no independent fall arrest. A 3-way retrieval SRL is a self-retracting lifeline that arrests a fall instantly and can then be cranked over to retrieval mode to raise the worker. Full rescue-ready systems typically mount both on the tripod.

Do I need both a tripod system and a gas monitor?

Yes. The retrieval system handles non-entry rescue; atmospheric testing before and during entry is a separate 1910.146 requirement. A calibrated 4-gas monitor (O2, LEL, CO, H2S) is the minimum for most permit spaces.

Do confined space blowers make a space safe to enter?

No. Ventilation reduces contaminant levels, but entry decisions rest on gas-monitor readings taken after ventilation, plus the rest of your permit program. If readings stay outside limits, the answer is supplied-air respiratory protection and a revised plan, not more airflow alone.
