How to choose

Density first, gauge second. High-density (micron-rated) film carries surprising weight for its thinness but zippers when punctured — it belongs on paper and packaging waste, which is most of an office. Low-density (mil-rated) film stretches around edges — it belongs on mixed, dense, or sharp waste. HDPE or LLDPE — reading the mil number honestly

The two resins fail differently: thin HDPE (measured in microns) carries surprising weight but zippers open on a sharp edge — right for paper and office waste; LLDPE (measured in mils) stretches around points, which is why contractor bags are 3-mil LLDPE and kitchen-line bags run 0.6–1.6 mil. Why do Slim Jim cans need their own liner size?

What do mil and micron mean on trash bags?

Mil is thousandths of an inch and describes low-density (LLDPE) bags — contractor bags run 3 mil. Micron is thousandths of a millimeter and describes high-density (HDPE) film — office liners run 6-16 microns. The units differ because the materials are engineered differently; comparing a mil number to a micron number directly is meaningless.

Why do liners come in gallon ranges like 40-45?

Liner sizing tracks receptacle families, not exact volumes — a 40x46 liner fits the whole cluster of 40, 44, and 45-gallon cans common in janitorial fleets. Match the range to your can's rated capacity and verify the width covers half its circumference.

What's a contractor bag, technically?

A 3-mil (or heavier) low-density bag around 55-60 gallons, usually with flap ties — engineered for construction debris that would shred lighter film. It's the ceiling of the standard liner market before drum liners take over.

Are clear liners better than black?

Clear supports see-through waste policies (security screening, recycling audits) and makes missed sharps visible before a compactor finds them. Black hides contents for restrooms and public areas. Function is identical at equal gauge; the choice is about visibility policy.

How many liners does a facility actually use?

Do heavier bags always mean fewer failures?

What causes liner blowouts at the seam?

Overfilled cans (compression against the rim), star-seal seams on loads with pooled liquid, and pulling a full bag against a rough can interior. Overhang matters: 3-4 inches folded over the rim keeps the load in the bag rather than on the seam.

Sharps and biohazard waste — can these liners handle them?
