Trash Can Liners & Commercial Garbage Bags

Commercial can liners in the two materials that matter: high-density (HDPE) micron-gauge liners for office and paper waste at pennies apiece, and low-density (LLDPE) mil-gauge bags up through 3-mil contractor class for loads with edges. Real Amazon case pricing on every SKU, from 1,000-count HD rolls to 50-count contractor cases. Wrong-liner blowouts aren't just mess — they're the slip hazards and sharps exposures your custodial crew wears; matching film to waste stream is a safety spec, not a shopping preference.

How to choose

Density first, gauge second. High-density (micron-rated) film carries surprising weight for its thinness but zippers when punctured — it belongs on paper and packaging waste, which is most of an office. Low-density (mil-rated) film stretches around edges — it belongs on mixed, dense, or sharp waste. The full decode, including why mil and micron aren't comparable numbers, is in our mil & micron thickness guide.

Size from the can, not the label. Width is half the can's circumference; length is height plus half the diameter plus overhang. The trash liner size calculator turns your can's measurements into the liner size and gauge to order — faster than trusting a gallon range printed for a can you may not own.

Program the waste stream. The standard two-SKU janitorial program: HD rolls on the cart for desksides, 1.5-mil LLDPE at collection points, and a case of contractor bags staged for projects. Liquid-heavy failures are spill events — keep the spill control collection stocked, post wet floor signs during cleanup, and glove crews from the nitrile collection for waste handling. Case-lot facility orders: bulk & business orders.

Can liner FAQ

What do mil and micron mean on trash bags?

Mil is thousandths of an inch and describes low-density (LLDPE) bags — contractor bags run 3 mil. Micron is thousandths of a millimeter and describes high-density (HDPE) film — office liners run 6-16 microns. The units differ because the materials are engineered differently; comparing a mil number to a micron number directly is meaningless.

LLDPE vs HDPE liners — which do I need?

Low-density (LLDPE) stretches and resists punctures: choose it for anything with edges — debris, metal, glass, dense mixed waste. High-density (HDPE) uses a third the material for the same capacity and costs far less per liner but zippers open when punctured: choose it for paper, packaging, and office waste.

What size liner fits my trash can?

Width = half the can's circumference; length = can height plus half its diameter plus 3-4 inches of overhang. A 44-gal Brute (24" dia, 31.5" tall) works out to roughly 40x46 — exactly the standard 40-45 gallon liner size. Our trash liner size calculator does the math from your can's dimensions.

Why do liners come in gallon ranges like 40-45?

Liner sizing tracks receptacle families, not exact volumes — a 40x46 liner fits the whole cluster of 40, 44, and 45-gallon cans common in janitorial fleets. Match the range to your can's rated capacity and verify the width covers half its circumference.

What's a contractor bag, technically?

A 3-mil (or heavier) low-density bag around 55-60 gallons, usually with flap ties — engineered for construction debris that would shred lighter film. It's the ceiling of the standard liner market before drum liners take over.

Are clear liners better than black?

Clear supports see-through waste policies (security screening, recycling audits) and makes missed sharps visible before a compactor finds them. Black hides contents for restrooms and public areas. Function is identical at equal gauge; the choice is about visibility policy.

How many liners does a facility actually use?

One liner per can per service — a 100-can office serviced daily burns ~2,600 liners a month, which is why HD cases of 1,000 exist. Deskside cans on HD rolls and centralized 44-gal collection points on 1.5-mil LLDPE is the standard two-SKU program.

Do heavier bags always mean fewer failures?

No — failures track material-to-load mismatch, not gauge alone. An 8-micron HD bag hauls 30 lb of paper fine; a 3-mil LLDPE bag fails on the same weight if a broken bottle starts a tear at the seam. Match density to the waste stream first, then step gauge for weight.

What causes liner blowouts at the seam?

Overfilled cans (compression against the rim), star-seal seams on loads with pooled liquid, and pulling a full bag against a rough can interior. Overhang matters: 3-4 inches folded over the rim keeps the load in the bag rather than on the seam.

Sharps and biohazard waste — can these liners handle them?

No. Regulated medical waste and sharps go in rated red-bag/sharps containers by law. These liners are general and industrial waste only; bloodborne-pathogen cleanup also demands proper PPE — see our disposable gloves and protective apparel collections before assigning that task.
