Fall Protection Anchor Points

Fall Protection Anchor Points

An anchorage point is the fixed structural element to which a personal fall arrest system or fall restraint system is connected — and it is the most critical component in the entire fall protection chain. OSHA 1926.502 and 1910.140 require that anchorage points used for personal fall arrest be capable of supporting at least 5,000 pounds per attached worker, or be designed, installed, and used under the supervision of a qualified person as part of a system maintaining a safety factor of at least two. No matter how good the harness or lanyard, a failed anchorage means a failed fall protection system. WC Safety reviews MSA Safety's full range of anchorage connectors and hardware, engineered for structural steel, concrete, wood framing, and portable applications.

Beam anchor clamps are among the most widely used anchorage connectors in structural steel construction and maintenance. MSA beam anchors clamp to the flanges of I-beams, wide flange sections, and structural angles, providing a fixed D-ring attachment point for a single worker's connecting device. Key considerations when selecting a beam anchor include the minimum and maximum beam flange width the clamp accommodates, the connection orientation (top-of-beam vs. side-of-beam), and whether the application requires rotation capability to reduce snap hook cross-loading as the worker moves. MSA beam anchors are load-rated to ANSI Z359.15 requirements and include clear flange-width specifications for proper selection.

Portable anchor slings and beam straps provide flexible anchorage solutions where clamping anchors are not practical — wrapping around structural members, pipes, columns, or engineered anchor points and providing a D-ring connection point for the worker's fall arrest system. MSA anchor slings are rated to 5,000 pounds minimum and are available in polyester webbing and wire rope configurations, with loop sizes to accommodate a range of structural member dimensions. For concrete structures, concrete anchor bolts and eyebolts with appropriate embedment specifications provide permanent or temporary anchorage points when other structural connections are unavailable.

Roof anchors for sloped and flat roofing applications provide OSHA-compliant anchorage in environments where structural framing members may not be readily accessible. MSA roof anchors are available in temporary configurations that attach to the roof deck without penetration, and in permanent configurations for facilities where ongoing roof access maintenance makes a fixed anchor the most practical solution. Temporary roof anchors must be properly evaluated for the specific roofing material and structural substrate — not all roofing materials provide adequate attachment strength for fall arrest loading.

Temporary horizontal lifeline anchor hardware — including end anchors, corner pulleys, intermediate supports, and tensioning devices — allows the construction of engineered lifeline systems spanning between two or more structural anchor points. MSA horizontal lifeline components are designed for use in complete systems that are engineered to account for sag angle, multiple-worker loading, and end anchor reaction forces. A properly engineered horizontal lifeline typically requires anchors capable of supporting forces significantly greater than the 5,000-pound-per-worker minimum, particularly when the system sag angle is shallow and multiple workers are attached simultaneously.

Anchorage hardware inspection and load certification recordkeeping are essential parts of a compliant fall protection program. OSHA requires that anchorage points be identified, load-rated, and maintained in serviceable condition. MSA anchorage products include load rating documentation and inspection criteria that support facility safety programs. Permanent anchors should be visually inspected before each use and periodically inspected by a qualified person; temporary anchors should be installed by a competent person and inspected each time they are deployed.

WC Safety reviews MSA anchorage connectors for structural steel, concrete, rooftop, and portable applications. Our selection includes beam clamps, anchor slings, roof anchors, and horizontal lifeline hardware to address every anchorage scenario your fall protection program requires. Pair with MSA V-SERIES® harnesses and connecting devices for a complete, compatible fall protection system from a single trusted manufacturer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are fall-protection anchor points used for?

An anchor point is the rated link that ties a fall-arrest system to the structure, and it functions alongside the harness, connector, and anchorage as one unit.

What anchor strength does OSHA require?

OSHA wants an anchorage rated for 5,000 pounds per attached worker, or one engineered under a qualified person to sustain a safety factor of at least two.

Self-retracting lifeline or shock-absorbing lanyard - which should I use?

An SRL that locks quickly and shortens free fall favors lower heights, while a shock-absorbing lanyard requires extra clearance below so its energy pack opens fully.

How much fall clearance do I need?

Sum the connector length, deceleration distance, harness stretch, the worker's height, and a safety margin, then ensure it stays under the distance to the level below.

How often must fall-protection anchor points be inspected?

Examine them before each use, and arrange a documented inspection by a competent person no less than annually, in line with ANSI Z359.

When should I retire fall-protection equipment?

Remove it from use following any fall-arrest event, or whenever webbing shows cuts or fraying, hardware is bent or corroded, or load-impact indicators have deployed.

What makes a complete fall-arrest system?

A complete setup joins the anchorage, body harness, and connector - the lanyard or self-retracting lifeline - into the ABC of fall protection, used together always.

At what height is fall protection required?

In construction OSHA typically requires protection at 6 feet, and in general industry at 4 feet near unprotected edges, with lower limits by dangerous equipment.

How do I choose an anchor point?

Go with a rated, compatible anchor set overhead whenever feasible, because mounting it overhead shortens the arrest distance and curbs dangerous swing-fall.

Does fall-protection equipment expire?

Rather than a set expiration, follow what the manufacturer advises, and retire any harness or device that fails inspection or has been subjected to a fall.
