Cable Lockouts

Cable Lockouts — Flexible Multi-Point LOTO for Complex Energy Isolation

Cable lockouts use flexible steel or polypropylene-coated cables with hasp ends to secure multiple energy isolation points simultaneously with a single cable loop, addressing complex LOTO scenarios where multiple valve handles, switchgear arms, or disconnect levers must be immobilized together and a single rigid lockout device cannot span all isolation points. The cable's flexibility allows it to loop through, around, or across multiple energy isolation devices in any configuration, providing versatile multi-point lockout capability that rigid lockout devices cannot accommodate without multiple separate devices at each point.

Cable lockout applications include: locking multiple ball valve handles in a manifold in the closed position simultaneously; immobilizing multiple switchgear handles in an electrical panel when circuit-breaker-specific lockouts are unavailable; securing ganged disconnect handles that control multiple circuits from a single mechanism; and reaching around equipment or into tight spaces where rigid lockout devices cannot be positioned properly. The cable diameter and construction must provide adequate rigidity to resist the force required to pull the isolation device out of position — cables that can be stretched or deformed allow circumvention of the lockout without removing the lock.

Steel cable lockouts provide higher tensile strength than nylon cable alternatives, resisting cutting, abrasion, and deformation forces that might be applied to circumvent the lockout in high-risk industrial environments. The cable jacket — typically vinyl or nylon coating over the steel core — provides electrical non-conductivity for electrical LOTO applications and protection against the environmental corrosion of industrial process environments. Stainless steel cable cores provide corrosion resistance for wet environments, chemical handling areas, and outdoor installations where zinc-coated carbon steel cable would rust and seize over time.

Cable length selection is critical for the application: cables should be long enough to comfortably reach all required isolation points without over-straining the cable, but short enough that the excess cable length does not create a tangling or tripping hazard around the work area. Standard cable lockout lengths range from 6 inches to 10 feet, with custom lengths available for specialized applications. Quick-reeler cable lockout sets that automatically retract excess cable provide practical convenience in high-use applications where cable management is otherwise time-consuming.

Combination cable lockout sets that include hasps, padlocks, and LOTO tags provide complete capability for complex multi-point lockout procedures without requiring assembly from separate component stock. These sets are well suited for maintenance teams that perform variable LOTO procedures across different equipment configurations and need flexible capability rather than fixed-equipment-specific devices. Our cable lockout collection includes single-point cable lockouts, multi-loop configurations for complex manifold isolation, and complete cable LOTO kit sets.
