Cross-line vs 360
Cross-line throws one vertical and one horizontal plane - most layout tasks need nothing more. 360-degree heads wrap every wall at once, which earns the premium in tile and ceiling work.
Green vs red beams
Green reads several times farther in daylight; red conserves battery and cost for interior work. The lineup carries both, labeled per listing.
Accuracy and range are published numbers
Layout-critical work cares about the accuracy line in each listing (commonly around 1/8 inch at 30 ft in this class) - we table what each maker states and nothing more.
Laser safety is real but simple
Check the class on the unit, then behave the same way regardless. Construction line lasers are typically Class 2 or Class 3R, and the difference matters: Class 2 relies on the blink reflex to limit accidental exposure, while Class 3R sits above the level at which that reflex can be counted on. The class is printed on the product's own label — none of these listings publishes it in the title, so read the unit rather than assume. The behavioral rules do not change either way: never stare into the beam, never aim it at people or vehicles, and watch for reflections off glass, polished tile and standing water.
What are the rules for using a laser level at work?
Three sources govern this, and only one of them is about the product.
The product itself is classified under IEC 60825-1, the international laser-product safety standard, and sold in the US under the FDA/CDRH performance standard at 21 CFR 1040.10. That is where the Class 2 / Class 3R label on the tool comes from.
The workplace is covered by OSHA 29 CFR 1926.54 for construction laser work — which requires that operators be trained and qualified, that laser areas be posted, that the beam be shut off when not in use, and that workers not be exposed to light intensities above the limits the rule sets.
The user is covered by ANSI Z136.1, the US consensus standard for safe laser use, which is where hazard-control practice for higher classes comes from. ⚠ One thing that standard makes clear and which gets confused: laser eye protection is wavelength- and optical-density-specific. Ordinary tinted safety glasses do nothing, and the enhancement glasses sold alongside line lasers exist to make the beam easier to see — they are a visibility aid, not eye protection.

Layout work rarely happens on its own. Is a cross-line laser the same as a rotary laser?
Short answer: no, and this collection is entirely the first kind. All ten of the levels here are cross-line or 360-degree line lasers — there is no rotary unit among them.
A cross-line laser projects fixed planes: a horizontal line, a vertical line, or both crossing. That is the tool for interior layout — cabinets, tile, drop ceilings, chair rails, stud lines. A rotary laser spins a single dot rapidly through 360 degrees to describe a plane, works at far longer range, and is the tool for site work and grading. Because a spinning dot is effectively invisible outdoors, a rotary is normally used with a detector on a grade rod rather than by eye.
If you searched for a rotary laser, or for a laser level for grading, this is not the page that has one — and we would rather say so than let the category name blur two different tools.
Every unit here is a self leveling laser level, which is the feature that separates a layout tool from a spirit level on a tripod: the pendulum finds true within its own compensation range and flags you when the mounting is outside it, rather than quietly projecting a wrong line.
Green or red beam — does it matter?
Short answer: yes for visibility, no for safety. Six of the ten here state a green beam in their own titles and one states red, with three not saying.
Green wins on visibility for a straightforward reason: human vision peaks in the green part of the spectrum, so a green beam looks several times brighter than a red beam of the same output power. On a long interior run, in a well-lit room, or anywhere near a window, that is the difference between a line you can work to and a line you are squinting for. Red costs less and is perfectly usable in dim interiors, and it typically draws less battery.
⚠ What green does not do is make the tool safer. Apparent brightness is a property of your eye, not of the hazard — the hazard is set by the class on the label. A brighter-looking green line can just as easily be the higher-class device.
Most construction lasers are Class 2 (≤1 mW) and are eye-safe on the blink reflex alone, but the beam should still never be aimed at head height across an occupied space, and laser-viewing glasses increase beam visibility without filtering hazard.
