What Are Valved Respirators?

A valved respirator is any disposable mask — N95, N99, R95, or P100 — built with a mechanical exhalation valve at the front. The valve is a small flap that seals during inhalation, so all incoming air is still drawn through the filter media (the inbound protection is identical to an unvalved mask of the same rating). On exhalation, the valve opens to release breath with minimal resistance. The result is a cooler microclimate inside the mask, far less lens fogging for safety-glasses and welding-helmet users, and noticeably easier breathing during sustained physical work.

Crucially, the valve does not change the wearer's protection level. A valved N95 is still an N95 with an Assigned Protection Factor of 10; a valved P100 still captures 99.97% of particulate. What changes is comfort, and for many crews that is the difference between a respirator that gets worn correctly all day and one that gets pulled down at the first sign of heat.

Valved vs Non-Valved Respirators: Benefits and Limitations

The valve's one limitation: Because exhaled air leaves through the valve unfiltered, a valved respirator protects the wearer but not the people around them, and it should not be used where source control of the wearer's breath matters — sterile fields, cleanrooms, food production, or protecting others from an infectious wearer. For those settings, choose an unvalved respirator.

How to Choose the Right Respirator

• Pick the NIOSH rating first (N95, R95, or P100 based on your hazard), then choose a valved version within it.
• Use a valve for heat and exertion — hot environments, long durations, and tasks that cause heavy breathing.
• Avoid the valve where source control matters — sterile, cleanroom, food, or protecting nearby people.

One maintenance point is unique to valved respirators: the exhalation valve itself. Inspect it before each use to confirm the flap seats cleanly and is free of dust, debris, or distortion, because a valve propped open by grit can let unfiltered air bypass the seal on inhalation through the valve seat. Keep the valve cover clear, store the mask so the valve is not crushed, and retire any respirator whose valve no longer closes crisply. With that small habit, a valved facepiece delivers the same rated protection as an unvalved one of the same class — while keeping workers measurably cooler, drier, and more willing to wear it correctly through a long shift.

Are all masks on this shelf actually valved?

34 of the 35 state a valve. The exception is the Moldex M2600N95 Special Ops, whose own title says “Unvalved” — it is the unvalved sibling of the valved M2700/M2800 and is filed alongside them. Check the title line before you buy.

Which NIOSH classes come valved here?

Every disposable class: 18 valved n95 listings, six R95, three P95, three P100 (including the Moldex 4400 AirWave), two N100 and two N99. The letter still picks your oil resistance and the number your efficiency — the valve changes none of that.

What is a cool flow valve?

Cool flow is 3M’s trade name for its low-resistance exhalation valve, used across the 8511, 8210V and welding 8212/8214 models here. Moldex’s equivalents are the Ventex and exhale valve designs. All do the same job: dump warm, humid exhale forward instead of through the media.

What does the valve on a respirator do?

Do valved respirators stop fogging on safety glasses?

Is a valved N95 OSHA-approved for the workplace?

Can I get a valved P100 disposable?

Do I still need a fit test for a valved respirator?

Yes. The valve affects exhalation comfort, not the face seal. OSHA 1910.134 still requires fit testing, medical evaluation, and a written program, and you must be clean-shaven along the seal for the respirator to perform as rated.
