Spill Kit and Containment Shelf — Absorbents to Berms

Short answer: a spill kit is sized to your worst realistic spill, not your average one — — and this nineteen-listing shelf runs from absorbent socks and mat pads through drum platforms and berms, led by New Pig (12 listings) with Oil-Dri, Eagle, Global Industrial, Stardust and AWF PRO. Universal absorbents take everything; oil-only floats on water for outdoor and marine work.

Round-2 additions: the containment layer is now complete — drain covers to seal the path to the storm drain, a reusable 10-ft barrier dike, oil-only booms for water and heavy perimeters, and the Eagle 4-drum platform that finishes the 1 → 2 → 4-drum ladder.

How to choose

Start with the liquid. Petroleum outdoors or near water: oil-only (it repels rain and floats). Mixed shop fluids: universal. Acids: the neutralizing kit, staged with chemical-resistant gloves and splash goggles.

Then the volume. Match kit absorbency to your largest credible spill — a 55-gallon drum failure needs the 20–30-gallon kit class plus containment, not a bucket kit. Consumables (pads, socks) restock the kits; buy them by the case, not the incident.

Prevention beats response. Containment platforms under working drums satisfy secondary-containment expectations and end chronic drip cleanup; see also flammable cabinet requirements for the storage side. Round out the response corner with a trauma kit, first aid, disposable nitrile gloves, and — for solvent vapors — a properly matched respirator cartridge. Crews ordering at facility scale: our bulk & business orders page routes case quantities through Amazon Business.

Spill control FAQ

Universal or oil-only absorbent — which do I stock?

Universal (gray) absorbs everything including water — the default indoors. Oil-only (white) repels water and floats, which makes it the outdoor and wet-area answer. Many facilities stock both and color-code the response.

How big should a spill kit be?

Size to the largest single container in the area — a 20-gallon kit cannot answer a 55-gallon drum failure. Walk the floor, find the biggest credible release, and buy the kit that swallows it.

Universal vs oil-only sorbents — what's the difference?

Universal (gray) absorbs everything: oils, coolants, solvents, water. Oil-only (white) absorbs petroleum and repels water — it floats, which makes it the pick outdoors, on water, or near drains where rain would saturate universal sorbents.

What spill kit size does my facility need?

Size to your largest credible spill: bucket kits (4–5 gal) for machine areas, 20-gal drum kits for drum-handling zones, 30-gal overpack kits near bulk storage. The overpack doubles as the container for a failed drum.

What does OSHA actually require for spill response?

OSHA doesn't mandate a specific kit — it requires hazard-appropriate response capability through standards like HAZWOPER (1910.120) for emergency response and housekeeping/walking-surface rules for prompt cleanup. EPA and fire codes drive secondary containment.

When do I need drum containment pallets?

Whenever drums store liquids that would reach floor drains or soil — EPA SPCC rules and local fire codes commonly require secondary containment for oil and hazardous liquids. Low-profile platforms make daily drum access practical.

How do I respond to a spill in the right order?

Protect people first (PPE, ventilation), stop the source, contain the spread with socks, then absorb with pads, then decontaminate and dispose per your waste rules. Kits stage all of it in one grab.

What PPE belongs with a spill kit?

Chemical-resistant gloves and splash protection at minimum — matched to your liquids. Kits include starter PPE; supplement from the chemical-resistant glove collection for your specific chemistry.

How is used absorbent disposed of?

It takes on the classification of what it absorbed: used oil sorbents follow used-oil rules; chemical sorbents may be hazardous waste. Your SDS and local regulations govern — bag, label, and segregate.

Are acid-neutralizing kits worth the premium?

Where acids live — battery rooms, plating, labs — yes: neutralization converts the hazard instead of concentrating it in a soaked pad that's still corrosive. For everything else, universal kits cover it.

How often should kits be inspected?

Monthly checks plus restock after any use. A kit missing its socks is a decoration — treat sealed inventory like fire-extinguisher checks, on a tag.

Do you handle bulk orders for facilities?

Yes — multi-kit and case-quantity orders route through Amazon Business; see our bulk & business orders page for how crews order PPE and spill supplies at quantity.

Honest shelf notes

Ten records carry empty SKU fields (a data-hygiene item, not a product defect). Kits handle the response; secondary containment — the drum platforms and berms above — handles the prevention duty under EPA SPCC rules, and both live on this one shelf.

Our methodology

We pulled every live record on this shelf — vendor, gas list, availability and cross-shelf membership — and this page describes only what those records state. Exposure duties come from OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1000 PELs, with exposure science from NIOSH. We do not lab-test detectors and hold no safety certification.

Why trust this page

WC Safety is an independent review site with no products of its own — nothing here is stocked, warehoused or shipped by us. Purchase links go to Amazon and earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you; no manufacturer pays for placement, which is why this page discloses dead listings and cross-shelved catalogs instead of hiding them — in gas detection, overstated coverage is a hazard.
