Which flat fold respirator should you choose?

Short answer: pick the filtration class from the hazard, then the fold style for fit. For everyday N95 work the Moldex 2200N95 and 3M 9205+ Aura are the reference designs. If heat build-up is the problem, take a valved model such as the 3M 9211+. For maximum filtration in the same folded format, the Moldex 4400P100 is the top of this collection.

Our methodology: how this collection was curated

We list only respirators with a NIOSH approval class stated by the manufacturer, recorded exactly as given — N95, N100, or P100 — and we never present the fold style as if it were a protection rating. Panel counts, strap type, and valve presence are reported as design facts because they affect fit and comfort rather than filtration. We also say what is not here: every product on this page is a single-use filtering facepiece, none takes a replaceable cartridge, and none is certified to EN 149 or AS/NZS 1716, so European FFP2 and Australian P2 model numbers are deliberately absent.

Flat Fold Respirators (2026)

The flat fold exists to solve two problems at once. A molded cup takes up space and gets crushed in a bag, so it tends not to be carried; a flat fold slips into a pocket or a kit and survives, which means it is present when the dust starts. The second problem is fit — a rigid cup is one shape, while folded panels hinge to follow the jaw and nose bridge, and that is the more important advantage. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, a tight-fitting respirator in a workplace requires medical evaluation and fit testing precisely because a poor seal defeats the filter. Approval classes come from NIOSH under 42 CFR Part 84 and can be confirmed on the CDC NIOSH-approved respirator list.

How to choose a foldable n95 or higher class

Is a flat fold mask better than a molded cup?

Better at two specific things, and not inherently better at filtering. A flat fold mask packs without crushing, so it survives in a toolbox or glovebox and is actually available when needed, and its hinged panels adapt to more face shapes than a fixed cup. What it does not do is filter more — a cup-style N95 and an N95 flat fold mask meet the same NIOSH requirement. Some people also find a cup more stable under a hard hat or with heavy movement, so the honest answer is that fold style is a fit-and-storage decision, not a protection upgrade.

Does the fold affect the filtration class?

No. The class letter and number come from the filter media and the NIOSH test, not the shape of the facepiece — which is why this collection contains flat folds in N95, N100 and P100. The letter tells you oil resistance (N is not oil resistant, P is), and the number is the minimum efficiency. A folded P100 and a cup P100 both filter at least 99.97%.

Do I need a fit test to wear one?

For workplace use, yes. OSHA 1910.134 requires a medical evaluation and an annual fit test before an employee wears any tight-fitting respirator, folded or not. Facial hair crossing the sealing surface prevents a seal regardless of design, and the panel construction does not compensate for it. Voluntary home use is outside the fit-testing rule, but a leaking mask underperforms just as badly.

Why are European and Australian model numbers missing?

Because they are certified to different standards. The 3M Aura family includes 9320, 9322 and 9332 variants sold under EN 149 as FFP2 or under AS/NZS 1716 as P2, and none of those is a NIOSH approval. Everything in this collection is NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 approved, and we do not list FFP2 or P2 models alongside them, because treating the classes as interchangeable is exactly the mistake that gets the wrong respirator specified.

Should the respirator have a valve?

Take a valve when heat and moisture build-up is the reason people pull masks off — it vents exhaled air and makes extended work more tolerable. Valved models protect the wearer identically to unvalved ones; the only difference is that they do not filter what is breathed out, which matters for source control rather than for your own protection.

Storage, reuse, and when to discard

The storage advantage is real but conditional. A flat fold survives being carried, yet it is still a single-use product, and keeping one folded in a pocket for weeks exposes it to abrasion, moisture and contamination that degrade both the media and the seal. Store unused respirators in their original packaging until needed, and treat a mask that has been loose in a bag as compromised. Discard any filtering facepiece that is damaged, visibly soiled, or noticeably harder to breathe through, and after work with wet or heavily contaminated material — our reference on reusing an N95 covers the limits in detail.

What is a flat fold respirator?

A NIOSH-approved filtering facepiece built from flat panels that fold along seams rather than holding a pre-formed cup shape. It packs flat for storage and its hinged panels conform to more face shapes than a rigid cup.

Is a flat fold mask better than a cup-style one?

Better for storage and for fitting a wider range of faces, but not better at filtering — both meet the same NIOSH requirement for their class. Some people find a cup more stable under a hard hat.

Does the fold change the filtration class?

What does the N or P in the class mean?

Why do you not list the 3M 9320 or 9332?

Those are European and Australian Aura variants certified as FFP2 under EN 149 or P2 under AS/NZS 1716, not NIOSH approvals. Every respirator in this collection is NIOSH-approved under 42 CFR Part 84, and the classes are not interchangeable.

Can I keep a folded respirator in my pocket or toolbox?

That is the design's main practical advantage, but keep unused masks in their original packaging. A respirator carried loose is exposed to abrasion, moisture and contamination that degrade both the filter media and the sealing surface.

Are flat fold respirators reusable?

No — these are single-use filtering facepieces. Discard when damaged, soiled, or harder to breathe through, and after work with wet or heavily contaminated material.

Is the nuisance-OV model protection against vapours?

No. A nuisance-level relief layer reduces odour below the permissible exposure limit and is not a rated gas or vapour cartridge. If vapour exposure is a genuine concern, a filtering facepiece is the wrong tool.

Do flat folds come in different sizes?

Some families do — the Moldex 2201N95 is the small version of the 2200N95, for example. Size availability varies by model, so check the individual listing rather than assuming one size fits all.
