What are welding goggles actually for?

Short answer: gas work. Oxy-fuel cutting, torch brazing, torch soldering โ€” processes where the light comes from a burning gas flame rather than an electric arc. Every product here is a fixed shade 3 or shade 5 sealed goggle, and that shade range is what the OSHA filter-lens table at 29 CFR 1910.133 specifies for those jobs.

What they are not for is arc welding, and that boundary matters more than any other detail on this page.

Can you use welding goggles for MIG, TIG or stick welding?

No โ€” and this is the mistake worth preventing. MIG, TIG and shielded metal arc welding are electric arc processes, and an arc is a completely different order of brightness from a gas flame. The filter-lens table puts arc welding in the shade 10 to 14 range depending on amperage. A shade 5 goggle is off by five to nine shades.

The shade is only half the problem. An arc throws ultraviolet and infrared radiation plus spatter across your whole face, so arc processes need a helmet โ€” goggles leave your cheeks, chin and neck exposed to both. There is no combination of goggles that makes arc welding safe. How do you choose the shade number?

The shade rises with the intensity of the light, which in gas work means with the thickness of the metal and the size of the flame. The OSHA table structures it by process:

  • Torch soldering โ€” the lightest end of the range.
  • Torch brazing โ€” a step up, around shade 3 to 4.
  • Light oxygen cutting (thin material) โ€” roughly shade 3 to 4.
  • Medium oxygen cutting โ€” roughly shade 4 to 5. This is where most of this collection sits.
  • Heavy oxygen cutting (thick material) โ€” shade 5 and above.
  • Gas welding โ€” rises with material thickness through the same band and beyond.

Read the row for the work you are actually doing rather than picking the darkest lens available: a shade that is too dark makes you lean in to see the cut, which is its own hazard. Consult the table in the standard for your specific process and thickness โ€” the summary above is the shape of it, not a substitute for the row that governs you.

What this collection covers, honestly: six of the seven goggles here are shade 5 and one is shade 3. There is no shade 4, and nothing above shade 5. That makes this a medium-cutting range with one lighter option โ€” well matched to general oxy-fuel cutting and brazing, and at the bottom end of what heavy cutting calls for.

Fixed lens or flip-front?

A practical decision that affects how often the goggles come off, which in turn decides whether they get worn.

Fixed goggles have the shaded lens permanently in place. Simpler, cheaper, nothing to break โ€” and you have to lift the whole goggle to inspect your cut or chip slag, which is exactly the moment people leave them off.

Flip-front or lift-front goggles hinge the shaded lens up, leaving a clear impact lens underneath. You cut with the shade down and flip it up to look at the work without removing anything. On repetitive cut-and-inspect work that difference is the whole ergonomic argument, and the Lincoln pair here are described for cutting and grinding on the same basis.

The lens markings tell you what else the filter blocks: several models here are marked IR or IRUV, meaning the lens is rated against infrared, or infrared and ultraviolet, as well as carrying its shade number. Our ANSI Z87.1 reference decodes the full marking set.

What about plasma cutting?

Not with these. Plasma arc cutting is an electric arc process and considerably brighter than oxy-fuel โ€” the required shade climbs well above 5 and rises further with amperage. A shade 5 goggle is not adequate, and as with any arc process the face needs covering too.

Goggles, glasses or a helmet?

Three device types, three exposure levels, and they are not interchangeable.

Shaded safety glasses are spectacle-style and do not seal against the face. They suit light torch work and situations where you also need peripheral vision, but sparks and grit get in around the edges. Goggles โ€” this collection โ€” seal against the face, which keeps grinding sparks and cutting slag out and holds the shade in place when you are working at odd angles. That seal is the reason to choose them over glasses for cutting.

Can I use welding goggles for MIG welding?

No. MIG is an electric arc process requiring shade 10 to 14 depending on amperage, and a helmet rather than goggles because the arc throws radiation and spatter across the whole face. A shade 5 goggle is off by five to nine shades and leaves the face exposed.

What are shade 5 welding goggles for?

What is shade 3 used for?

Are welding goggles OK for plasma cutting?
