What Are Tinted Safety Glasses?
Tinted safety glasses are protective eyewear with a colored polycarbonate lens that reduces visible light transmission while meeting ANSI/ISEA Z87.1+ for high-velocity impact. The tint shades the eyes from sun without sacrificing the impact protection OSHA requires, and quality lenses still provide UV400 coverage against 99.9% of UVA/UVB. Are tinted safety glasses ANSI Z87.1 rated?
The tinted models in this collection are certified to ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 with the Z87+ high-velocity impact rating. A tinted lens provides the same impact protection as a clear one — the color only affects light transmission, not the safety rating. Always confirm the Z87+ mark.
What's the difference between smoke and mirror lenses?
A smoke lens is a neutral gray tint that reduces brightness evenly. A mirror lens adds a reflective coating on top of a tint, bouncing away even more light for the harshest glare while giving a finished, low-visibility-from-outside look. Both meet Z87.1 when certified.
Do amber safety glasses work at night?
Amber and yellow lenses boost contrast in low light, haze, and overcast conditions, which can make them feel "brighter," but they should not be used for true nighttime driving or in darkness because any tint reduces overall light to the eye. For dark conditions, use a clear lens.
Can I wear tinted safety glasses indoors?
It's not recommended — a dark tint reduces visibility in indoor lighting and can become a hazard. For work that moves between bright exterior and shaded interior, choose an indoor/outdoor lens that's light enough for inside yet shaded enough for moderate sun.
Do tinted safety glasses protect against UV?
Quality tinted safety glasses provide UV400 protection (99.9% of UVA/UVB). Importantly, tint darkness and UV protection are separate — a lens must be specifically rated for UV. For outdoor crews with long sun exposure, confirm the UV400 rating in addition to the tint.
