ANSI Z87.1 Brazing Cutting IR Filter Pyramex Safety Glasses Shade 3.0 Welding
EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.4/5 — WC Safety Review of the Pyramex SB7950SF, the Shade 3.0 IR-filter glass for light gas welding and cutting.
Editorial assessment by the WC Safety Editorial Team, based on published Pyramex specifications and category fit. We did not laboratory-test this product.

The Pyramex SB7950SF is an ANSI Z87.1+ welding safety glass with a built-in Shade 3.0 infrared filter, designed for brazing, soldering, and light oxy-fuel cutting. The shaded lens blocks the bright visible light and IR radiation of light gas processes, while the impact-rated polycarbonate base shields against sparks, slag, and flying debris. It is not a substitute for a welding helmet during arc welding — many welders wear it under a helmet as secondary eye protection.

Why the Pyramex SB7950SF suits light gas work

Brazing, soldering, and light oxy-fuel cutting throw off bright light and infrared that a clear lens won't filter — but they don't produce the blinding radiation of an electric arc. The SB7950SF fits that middle: a built-in Shade 3.0 IR filter to cut the glare and IR of light gas processes, on an impact-rated base that stops the sparks, slag, and debris cutting throws. It's the right tool for gas work, and a common secondary layer under a helmet. Our full Pyramex SB7950SF review rates it 4.4/5, and the safety glasses buyer's guide covers matching eyewear to the task.

Safety first: Shade 3.0 is for lower-radiation gas work only — it is not a substitute for a welding helmet during arc welding (MIG/TIG/stick), which requires a much darker shade and an auto-darkening filter; match the shade to the process using an OSHA/ANSI shade chart. And the SB7950SF is a safety glass, not a sealed goggle: it does not seal against a chemical splash hazard like flux splatter, fine dust, or fumes, which need a sealed goggle, face shield, or respirator. Choose eyewear against measured hazards with the when-do-you-need-safety-glasses guide.

What the listing documents

From the published specs: an ANSI Z87.1+ welding safety glass with a built-in Shade 3.0 infrared filter for brazing, soldering, and light oxy-fuel cutting; an impact-rated polycarbonate base that shields against sparks, slag, and flying debris; a dual-lens design with a soft nosepiece; model SB7950SF. Heavier gas cutting or gas welding calls for a darker shade such as 5.0. As pyramex safety glasses go, this is the shaded member — a genuine shade 3 welding safety glasses and a true ir filter safety glasses for light gas processes.

Choosing the right shade for the process

Shade selection is a safety decision, not a preference: too light a shade lets harmful radiation through. Shade 3.0 covers brazing, soldering, and light oxy-fuel cutting; medium-to-heavy gas cutting and gas welding need a darker shade such as 5.0. Always match the shade to the process and its radiation level using a recognized OSHA/ANSI shade selection chart. Compare other shaded options in the welding safety glasses collection, and the broader eye protection collection for face shields and helmets where the process demands them.

Where the SB7950SF sits in the Pyramex line

The SB7950SF is Pyramex's shaded gas-work glass; for general non-shaded protection the Goliath is the large-lens full-coverage frame, the I-Force is the dual-pane anti-fog specialist for foggy shops, the Intruder is the lightweight everyday wraparound, the Exeter ships anti-fog on every tint, and the Endeavor Plus adds a brow guard for overhead work. Keep a clear, non-shaded glass from the clear-lens collection for the non-welding parts of the job. Browse the full Pyramex safety glasses collection, and the best safety glasses 2026 roundup places the line against other brands.

Where it fits by job and crew orders

The Shade 3.0 filter suits brazing, soldering, and light cutting in fabrication and maintenance shops, and secondary wear under a helmet — the construction, manufacturing, and mechanics guides rank frames by task, and smaller-faced wearers should check the small-face guide and women's fit guide. For arc welding, use a proper helmet; where the hazard adds splash or fumes, add a sealed goggle from the safety goggles collection or a respirator. Great, affordable purchase. Good quality.
My son refused to wear the school provided safety glasses for his machining shop because they weren't "stylish". I found these on Amazon and he agreed to wear them. They are true to size, fit well and don't fog up. Slight tint allows for bright rooms/sun. Would purchase again.

Great for red light panel. Photo bio modulation.
Not using them as intended, I use them for my wife n kid when they are in front of the red light panel. Some people’s eyes are a little more sensitive to near infrared light. Works great to shield the eyes, but still allows visibility.

The IR 5.0 lenses are great for operating a CNC plasma cutting table
Ordered these for when I run the CNC plasma table at work. I wanted to be able to observe the arc at times for quality control. Making sure the entry point does what it's supposed to is critical on thicker material, and the IR 5.0 lenses let me have a better observation of exactly what is happening. I would highly recommend the 5.0s for anyone that works around fabrication equipment.I'll likely stick with a full hood for when I'm using the handheld plasma cutter, due to the proximity of the arc and for full face protection.I also tried the IR 3.0 lenses, but I don't think they are dark enough for how I want to use them. I think they will be useful at other times in the shop though.

Very comfortable
Good fit (for me, at least), nice side panels block ambient light and flying crud. An upgrade to my torch made some extra IR protection a good idea, and these will work fine.I find the product description a bit confusing, though. The title says "Shade 3", but "About this item" says "Includes 5.0 IR filter lens" - shade 5. I'm pretty sure that's what I got, quite a bit darker than shade 3, and probably more than I need. I haven't put these to the test, though. I should be able to see the workpiece just fine, with my regular bench lighting or maybe a bit more.BTW, these advertise some amount of UV protection. With a gas torch, IR is the big issue. It's not a problem, but make sure you know what kind of protection you need.-- wiredweird
