ANSI Class 3 High-Visibility Vests — Maximum Visibility Safety Vests for Road Workers

ANSI Class 3 high-visibility vests provide the highest level of conspicuity in the ANSI/ISEA 107 standard for high-visibility apparel, designed for workers exposed to high-speed traffic environments where maximum visibility at the greatest possible distance is critical for survival. While Class 2 vests are appropriate for parking lots, warehouse environments, and slow-speed traffic areas, Class 3 is required by MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) and OSHA for all workers within the right-of-way of roads where vehicles travel at 50 mph or greater, and for workers in any environment where visual complexity, background clutter, or reduced visibility conditions require the maximum visibility that Class 3 provides.

ANSI/ISEA 107 Class 3 minimum requirements are significantly more demanding than Class 2: Class 3 vests require at least 1,240 square centimeters of retroreflective material (versus 775 cm² for Class 2) and at least 775 square centimeters of background fluorescent material on the torso alone (Class 2 requires 0.5 m² total including sleeves). The additional retroreflective and fluorescent material creates 360-degree visibility with retroreflective bands that ring the torso and extend down the sleeves, ensuring the worker is visible from all approach directions at night and in daylight simultaneously. The sleeve striping is what primarily distinguishes Class 3 from Class 2 at a glance.

Background fluorescent fabric color — safety orange or safety yellow — is chosen based on the dominant background colors in the work environment. Fluorescent orange provides maximum contrast against green vegetation backgrounds common in highway corridor and median work, and is the most visible color in daylight at the UV wavelengths in direct sunlight. Fluorescent yellow-green provides maximum contrast against gray roadway and concrete backgrounds, and is the preferred color for utility and construction work in paved environments. Both colors comply with ANSI/ISEA 107 Class 3 requirements; the choice is based on environmental optimization rather than regulatory requirement.

Class 3 vest construction details affect worker acceptance and consistent use in the field. Lightweight mesh construction improves breathability and reduces heat stress in summer road construction environments where workers may work 10-hour shifts in direct sun at high ambient temperatures.
