Carbon Monoxide Alarms and Detectors for Home and Workplace

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas produced by incomplete combustion of fuels including natural gas, propane, gasoline, diesel, wood, and coal. Because CO cannot be detected by smell or sight, dedicated carbon monoxide alarms are the only reliable early warning system for dangerous CO accumulation in homes, garages, workplaces, and any enclosed space where combustion equipment operates. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that carbon monoxide poisoning causes more than 400 deaths and 20,000 emergency room visits annually in the United States — the vast majority preventable with functioning CO detection.

Carbon monoxide alarms work by continuously sampling air for CO concentration. When CO reaches alarm thresholds defined by UL Standard 2034 — 70 ppm for 1–4 hours, 150 ppm for 10–50 minutes, or 400 ppm for 4–15 minutes — the alarm sounds to alert occupants before they lose consciousness. Modern CO alarms also include a digital display showing the current CO concentration in parts per million, which is valuable for identifying low-level chronic exposure issues that trigger headaches and fatigue below the alarm threshold.

Alarm Types and Power Sources

CO alarms are available in plug-in, battery-operated, and hardwired configurations. Plug-in CO alarms install directly into a standard electrical outlet — many include battery backup to maintain function during power outages. Battery-operated standalone units require no wiring and can be placed in locations without convenient outlet access. Hardwired CO alarms connect to the home's electrical system and can be interconnected so that all units in the home alarm simultaneously when any one detects CO.

Workplace CO Safety

OSHA's permissible exposure limit for carbon monoxide in the workplace is 50 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average. Industrial CO detectors with electrochemical sensors, alarm setpoints calibrated to OSHA limits, and data logging capabilities are available for commercial and industrial monitoring.
