Assessed on the standards the product is actually certified to and on how the format fits a working shift, by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor.

The First Alert GCO1 Combination Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm provides dual protection against two invisible household dangers: carbon monoxide poisoning and combustible gas leaks. This plug-in detector continuously monitors for CO as well as propane, natural gas, and methane, sounding an 85dB alarm before dangerous levels build up.

  • Detects both carbon monoxide AND combustible gases (propane, natural gas, methane)
  • Plug-in with 9-volt battery backup ensures protection during power outages
  • Backlit digital display shows current CO levels at a glance
  • Loud 85dB alarm horn alerts the whole household
  • 5-year limited warranty
  • Dimensions: 5.6" x 3.1" x 1.8"

Meets UL 2075 standard for gas and carbon monoxide alarms. Ideal for homes with gas appliances, fireplaces, or attached garages.

first alert gco1 combination carbon monoxide and explosive β€” what the listing actually specifies

What to check before you buy

A portable extinguisher is for an incipient fire only. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157 and NFPA 10 both scope portable units to a fire still small enough to be approached safely with an escape route at your back. If it has spread beyond that, the correct action is to evacuate and call the fire service.

UL 2034 listing
Residential CO alarms in the US are listed to UL 2034. Industrial CO monitoring is a different class of instrument with different alarm thresholds.
Alarms expire
CO sensors have a finite life - commonly 7 to 10 years from manufacture. Many units now sound an end-of-life chirp and cannot be reset.
Placement
CO mixes with air rather than layering at the ceiling like smoke, so alarms go on every level and outside sleeping areas. Keep them away from fuel-burning appliances and vents to reduce nuisance alarms.
Digital display
A display showing parts per million lets you distinguish a low-level chronic leak from a spike, which matters when talking to responders.
