Hi-Vis Shirts — ANSI Class 2 High-Visibility Shirts and Long-Sleeve Work Shirts

High-visibility shirts integrate ANSI/ISEA 107 high-visibility performance directly into a standard work shirt garment, providing worker conspicuity without the separate vest layer that standard work shirts require. Hi-vis shirts are available in short-sleeve and long-sleeve configurations in safety orange and safety yellow fluorescent colors, with retroreflective striping woven into the shirt design to meet ANSI Class 2 or Class 3 visibility requirements. Workers in road construction, utility maintenance, railway operations, and logistics find hi-vis shirts particularly useful in warm weather when wearing a safety vest over a separate shirt creates heat stress, and in applications where wearing two garment layers is impractical.

ANSI/ISEA 107 Class 2 performance requires a minimum of 775 cm² of retroreflective material and 0.5 m² of background fluorescent material on the garment. Class 2 hi-vis shirts achieve these requirements through horizontal retroreflective bands at the chest and waist level, combined with the full fluorescent fabric body of the shirt. Class 3 hi-vis shirts — which meet the higher requirements for maximum visibility applications — add retroreflective bands on both sleeves in addition to the torso bands, meeting the expanded retroreflective material area required for workers exposed to high-speed highway traffic.

Fabric construction for hi-vis shirts varies by application environment. Moisture-wicking polyester knit shirts provide breathability and sweat management for high-activity outdoor workers in warm conditions — the polyester construction maintains the retroreflective material bond through repeated industrial laundering better than cotton, which can cause retroreflective tape to peel when repeatedly washed at high temperatures. Cotton-poly blends provide a softer feel preferred by workers who wear shirts in direct skin contact for extended shifts. Flame-resistant (FR) hi-vis shirts combine the visibility requirements of ANSI/ISEA 107 with the FR performance requirements of NFPA 70E and NFPA 2112 for workers in electrical arc flash and flash fire hazard environments where ignition resistance is also required.

Long-sleeve hi-vis shirts provide sun protection and arm coverage for outdoor workers with extended direct sun exposure, reducing UV radiation exposure during full-day outdoor work without the heat penalty of wearing an additional cover layer. UPF-rated long-sleeve hi-vis shirts that combine sun protection with high-visibility performance are increasingly used by utility and telecommunications workers who spend entire shifts outdoors in summer conditions. The long sleeves also provide abrasion protection against brush, vegetation, and rough surfaces during off-road utility work.

Collar styles — polo collar, crew neck, and button-front — affect both appearance and function. Polo-collar hi-vis shirts are appropriate for customer-facing and supervisory roles where professional appearance is expected alongside high-visibility compliance. Button-front shirts with chest pockets are preferred by technicians and operators who need pocket storage and ventilation management.
