Gas Detectors

Which industrial gas detector should you buy in 2026?

Short answer: for most workplaces, a portable 4-gas monitor (O2, LEL, CO, H2S) covers confined-space entry, a personal clip covers per-worker exposure, and dedicated single-gas detectors handle specific hazards like chlorine, ammonia or VOCs. Match the detector to how it is used and the gases you face.

Industrial gas detectors warn workers before an atmosphere becomes dangerous — oxygen-deficient, explosive, or toxic. WC Safety reviews the full range: carried, worn, fixed and transportable monitors, plus single-gas detectors for thirteen specific gases and the calibration gear that keeps them accurate. Use the directories below to shop by detector type or by the gas you need to detect.

Shop by detector type

Shop by gas

Dedicated collections for each gas, from the confined-space four to specialty toxics:

Detector types compared

Form factor How it's used Best for Typical type
Portable Carried to a space Spot checks, pre-entry, surveys Single or multi-gas
Personal / Wearable Worn by one worker All-shift exposure Single-gas or compact 4-gas
Fixed Permanently mounted Continuous unattended area Point detectors + controller
Area / Transportable Placed at a hazard Job-site zone, hole watch Transportable multi-gas
Gas Leak Carried, probe Pinpoint a leak source Combustible / refrigerant

How to choose a gas detector

List the gases

Start from every gas your work can release. The confined-space four (O2/LEL/CO/H2S) are covered by 4-gas monitors; VOCs and specific toxics need dedicated detectors.

Match the form factor

Carried, worn, fixed or transportable — pick by how the instrument is used, using the comparison above.

Plan calibration

Every detector needs bump testing and periodic calibration. Budget for calibration gas and a regulator and sensor replacement (typically every 2–3 years).

Check certification and ratings

For flammable atmospheres, choose intrinsically safe instruments; for fixed installs, match the hazardous-area classification.

Gas detection and OSHA

For permit-required confined spaces, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 requires testing the atmosphere in order — oxygen first, then combustibles, then toxics — which is why the 4-gas configuration is the industry standard. Toxic-gas alarms should be set to the applicable OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits and ACGIH Threshold Limit Values. Gas detection complements, but does not replace, respiratory protection where an atmosphere cannot be made safe.

Frequently asked questions

What is an industrial gas detector?

An instrument that measures hazardous gases in the workplace — oxygen, combustibles, and toxic gases — and alarms when levels are unsafe. They come as portable, personal/wearable, fixed and transportable area monitors.

What is a 4-gas detector?

A monitor that reads the four confined-space hazards — oxygen (O2), combustible gas (LEL), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) — on one screen. Browse them under Portable Gas Detectors.

Portable, personal, fixed or area — which do I need?

Use portable to check a space, personal for per-worker exposure, fixed for continuous plant monitoring, and area for a job-site perimeter.

Which gas detector for confined-space entry?

A portable 4-gas monitor (often with a sample-draw pump) for pre-entry testing, plus a personal monitor worn during the work.

How do I detect a specific gas like chlorine or ammonia?

Use a dedicated single-gas detector — see the chlorine, ammonia, SO2 and other gas-type collections.

Do gas detectors need calibration?

Yes — bump-test before each use and calibrate on schedule with the right calibration gas and regulator.

What gas do I test first in a confined space?

Oxygen first, then combustibles (LEL), then toxic gases — the order OSHA 1910.146 follows, because combustible sensors need oxygen to read correctly.

What is %LEL?

The percentage of the Lower Explosive Limit — how close a combustible gas is to igniting. See Combustible Gas (LEL) Detectors.

Is a gas detector the same as a gas leak detector?

No — a monitor measures whether the air is safe; a gas leak detector pinpoints where gas escapes.

What gases can't a 4-gas monitor detect?

VOCs, CO2 and specific toxics like chlorine, ammonia and SO2 — those need dedicated single-gas detectors. Browse the gas-type collections above.

How long do gas-detector sensors last?

Electrochemical and catalytic sensors typically last two to three years; infrared and PID sensors often longer. Sensors and calibration gas are the main ongoing costs.

Does OSHA require gas detection?

Yes — OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 requires atmospheric testing for permit-required confined-space entry, and toxic-gas exposure must stay within OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits.
