What should you actually check on an ozone detector?

Short answer: resolution first, range second, and be suspicious of a wide range. Ozone is controlled at 0.1 ppm, so an instrument scaled 0โ€“100 ppm puts the entire number that governs your decisions in the bottom tenth of one percent of its scale. A 0.01 ppm resolution gives you ten counts across the whole permissible limit โ€” that is the specification that determines whether the reading can support a decision. Range only tells you where the display stops.

Why is a wider range worse for an ozone detector?

Because the limits are so low that everything you care about happens near zero. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1000 the permissible exposure limit for ozone is 0.1 ppm as an eight-hour time-weighted average. The NIOSH Pocket Guide recommends 0.1 ppm as a ceiling โ€” a value that should not be exceeded at any moment, not averaged across a shift โ€” and puts the IDLH at 5 ppm.

Now map those onto the instruments here. On a 0โ€“100 ppm scale the permissible limit sits at one thousandth of full scale and the IDLH at one twentieth. On a 0โ€“20 ppm scale the same limit sits five times higher up the dial. Neither is generous, which is exactly why resolution carries the decision: an instrument reading in 0.01 ppm steps resolves the 0.1 ppm limit into ten increments, and one reading in 0.1 ppm steps resolves it into one. The second cannot tell you whether you are at the limit or at ten times it.

This is worth stating plainly because it runs against the instinct that more range is more capability. For ozone, headroom you will never use is bought with precision you need. If you also monitor a gas where the numbers run high, that is an argument for a second instrument, not a wider one.

Can you smell ozone before it becomes a problem?

You can smell it, and that is precisely what makes it dangerous. Ozone has a sharp, clean, electrical smell that most people detect below the permissible exposure limit โ€” which sounds like a built-in margin of safety and is not one.

Olfactory fatigue to ozone is fast and pronounced. Within minutes the smell recedes, and it recedes whether the concentration is falling, holding steady or climbing. People routinely report that the smell "went away", conclude the ozone did too, and stay. That is the failure mode this instrument exists to prevent, and it is why a detector with an alarm is not redundant with a working nose.

Where does ozone exposure come from?

Four settings account for most of it, and they are less exotic than the gas sounds.

Ozone generators. Machines sold for odor removal and remediation produce ozone deliberately, and they are not safe to run in an occupied space. The legitimate workflow is to treat an empty room, shut the generator down, ventilate, and verify the space is clear before anyone re-enters. A handheld monitor is what turns "it has probably cleared by now" into a reading. Ozone decays back to ordinary oxygen on its own, which is why ventilation plus time is the control โ€” but decay rate depends on the room, and guessing is what puts people back in early.

Water treatment. Ozonation is widely used for disinfection, and the exposure risk sits around the generation equipment and contact vessels rather than in the water.

Welding. Ultraviolet light from the arc converts oxygen in the surrounding air into ozone, worst on aluminum and stainless with GMAW and GTAW. Laboratories and high-voltage equipment. UV sources, electrostatic equipment and anything producing a sustained electrical discharge generate ozone as a by-product.

What kind of hazard is ozone?

A strong oxidant and a direct lung irritant โ€” not an asphyxiant. It does not displace oxygen and it does not interfere with how your cells use it. It damages respiratory tissue on contact, which is why the limits are set so low and why the NIOSH figure is a ceiling rather than an average: with an irritant, a brief high excursion matters in a way that averaging across eight hours would hide.

That distinction also shapes what protects you. There is no NIOSH-approved air-purifying cartridge class for ozone in the way there is for organic vapor, so the controls are engineering and time โ€” shut down the source, ventilate, wait, and verify with an instrument before re-entry. A monitor alarms; it does not protect. In an atmosphere at or above the IDLH the correct response is to leave, and the equipment for entering a known hazardous atmosphere is in supplied air respirator systems, with procedure in the confined space entry checklist.

The "not stated" rows are deliberate. Where a listing does not document a figure we leave the cell empty rather than estimating it โ€” and on an instrument whose whole value is precision near zero, an undocumented resolution is itself worth knowing before you buy. Which ozone detector fits which job?
