The TopTes Guard-633 is the budget clip-on single-gas H2S detector — a personal gas detector with a fast 0.5-second response, up to 7-day battery life, an adjustable alarm range, and an explosion-proof body, at the lowest price in the TopTes personal lineup — a monitoring device, not respiratory protection.

Why the TopTes Guard-633 is the budget H2S clip

Not every H2S program can justify a premium 2-year clip on every worker — the Guard-633 is the low-cost way to cover the hazard. It is a rechargeable clip-on H2S detector with a fast 0.5-second response, an adjustable alarm range you set to your site limits, up to 7-day battery life with a low-battery alert, and an explosion-proof body for flammable atmospheres. As H2S monitors go, this is the budget clip-on pick, and the gas detection guide and the best H2S monitor guide explain where it fits. It puts adjustable H2S monitoring on each worker for the least money.

Safety first: a gas detector alarms; it does not protect. In an IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmosphere you must evacuate and use supplied-air or an SCBA — a monitor warns of the hazard, it is not a substitute for respiratory protection, and high H2S concentrations are immediately life-threatening. Bump-test before each use, confirm the adjustable alarm setpoints match your action levels on the listing, and follow your confined-space entry procedure.

What the TopTes Guard-633 listing documents

From the published specs: a single-gas H2S clip-on monitor; a fast 0.5-second response; up to a 7-day battery with low-battery alert; an adjustable alarm range; and an explosion-proof body with three alarm modes. These are true hydrogen sulfide monitor and single-gas H2S clip credentials in an explosion-proof gas detector. Confirm the alarm setpoints on the listing.

How the TopTes Guard-633 compares to other gas detectors

For a 2-year maintenance-free H2S clip, the BW Clip H2S; for a 2-year disposable H2S clip, the GasAlertClip Extreme H2S; for the entry four-gas TopTes, the TopTes Guard-101; for a single-gas CO clip, the TopTes CT-580; and for a compact certified 4-gas, the RKI GX3R. The Clip H2S vs GasAlertClip Extreme guide and the 4-gas vs single-gas guide help you choose.

Choosing the right gas monitor

Match the gas, service model, and alarm points to your hazard. Browse the gas detectors, personal gas detectors, and portable gas detectors collections; for the coverage decision, the best personal gas detector guide; and for area and fixed coverage, the area gas monitors and fixed gas detection systems collections.

Where it fits by job and crew orders

The Guard-633 suits oil and gas, wastewater, and confined-space crews that need low-cost H2S coverage with adjustable alarms — see the best H2S monitor guide, the gas leak detectors collection, and the calibration accessories collection for the wider program. Its low cost and adjustable alarms make H2S monitoring easy to scale across a crew, and the ability to set the alarm level lets a program match its own action limits rather than accept a fixed factory point. The seven-day battery means a worker can wear it across a work week between charges without a daily routine to forget. Confirm the alarm setpoints match your action levels on the listing, bump-test before use, and replace the sensor at its service interval. Just charge them every two days when in continuous use.
This is a great natural gas detector. We work with natural gas 5 days a week and this small detector will notify you when a gas leak is detected. My guys keep them on their belts when needed. They are small enough not to get in the way when working. We also have some of the larger ones for 4 types of gas detection. The smaller one is a single detection unit.

Not strong enough to find a decaying animal under the house
I thought I could use this for finding the source of a dead decaying animal under the house. It did not work for that purpose at all

Good overall unit on a budget
This H2S monitor is a good unit and performs as it should, but it has a few flaws. The review is based on oil field experience and usage.First off, the unit is solidly built with a blue hard plastic body that takes a pretty good beating with no issues. The rear clamp is strong and holds the unit in place during quick and harsh movements. The unit is easy to use with a large window for the monitor, bright back lighting, easy to read numbers, and three rubber push buttons for simple controls. Powering up the unit runs it through a self diagnostic check which triggers the warning modes of a loud beeping, bright flashing red lights, and a vibration. The vibration mode is weaker than I would like and should be much more intense due to loud and distracting working conditions and thicker winter clothing. The unit is powered by an internal rechargeable battery that is listed to work for five days of usage. One issue I have with this unit is that when it is shut off, there is still a battery drain that should not be happening. My monitor was powered down for a week with a full battery charge and when I powered it back up, the battery was almost completely drained.Another issue is the included charging cord. The connection on the cord going into the monitor is the old mini style that is rarely used anymore and can be difficult to find in a hurry if lost. Using a C cord for charging should be the standard. There is a hard plastic storage case that works well to keep the monitor safe. The included manual is easy to read and understand. The monitor works well and triggers properly with all warnings when bump tested. I have not had an actual on site incident yet to test real world conditions.Keep in mind that this is only an H2S gas monitor and will not detect other gasses. Many of the other reviews appear to have a misunderstanding as to what this monitor will detect or how to properly use it.Overall, this is a good monitor and appears to be doing the job it was built for. It is on the lower end of the purchase price scale which makes it a good option on a budget.

TOPTES Guard-611 Portable H2SGreat meter, the only thing I can complain about is the rubber boot for the charging cable will not stay in it’s socket after charging and I have to cover with duct tape to keep it clean.

Not trustworthy.
Not trustworthy. The manual says:"The device may not function properly in the presence of high concentration gases"This is not acceptable since it is potentially a life or death situation
