ANSI Z87.1 Anti-Fog Uvex
EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.4/5 — WC Safety Review of the Uvex Protege, the slim low-profile wraparound for comfortable extended wear.
Editorial assessment by the WC Safety Editorial Team, based on published Uvex specifications and category fit. We did not laboratory-test this product.

The Uvex Protege is a slim, low-profile wraparound safety glass from Honeywell's Uvex line, rated ANSI Z87.1+, offered in six lens and coating combinations across Gray and Clear tints. A slim co-polymer frame with an adjustable nose bridge keeps it understated and comfortable for extended wear, and lens options include Uvextreme and HydroShield anti-fog plus Ultra-Dura hard coat — a lightweight, unobtrusive frame for general industrial and construction work.

Why the Uvex Protege is the slim all-day pick

The safety glasses people keep on all shift are the ones they barely notice. The Protege aims for that with a slim, understated low-profile frame that's lighter than heavier-framed glasses, plus an adjustable nose bridge to dial in the fit. Then it backs it with the lenses that matter — Uvextreme or HydroShield anti-fog for humid work, Ultra-Dura hard coat for abrasive conditions, and SCT contrast tints. Comfortable, unobtrusive, and Z87.1+. Our full Uvex Protege review rates it 4.4/5, and the safety glasses buyer's guide covers how frame profile affects all-day wear.

Safety first: the Protege is impact-and-debris protection, not a sealed goggle — it is not rated against a chemical splash hazard, fine airborne dust, or vapor, which require sealed goggles or a face shield per your hazard assessment. Match the tint to the light: a gray or SCT lens indoors can dim your view of hazards, so keep a clear lens for indoor tasks. Choose eyewear against measured hazards with the when-do-you-need-safety-glasses guide.

What the listing documents

From the published specs: ANSI Z87.1+ high-impact rating; a slim low-profile wraparound co-polymer frame with an adjustable nose bridge; six lens/coating combinations — Uvextreme Anti-Fog, HydroShield Anti-Fog, and Ultra-Dura hard coat across Clear, Gray, and SCT tints; base model S4200X. As uvex safety glasses go, the Protege is the slim member — a genuine slim safety glasses fit and a true anti fog safety glasses on its Uvextreme and HydroShield variants.

Choosing your Protege variant

Match the lens to the light and coating to the task: Clear anti-fog from the clear-lens collection for indoor and humid work, Gray for outdoor glare, and the SCT tints for contrast. The clear-vs-smoke lens guide settles the outdoor call, and the anti-fog variants pair with the anti-fog guide and anti-fog collection. For shifting light, an indoor/outdoor lens from another model is the versatile partner tint.

Where the Protege sits in the Uvex line

The Protege is Uvex's slim low-profile frame; the flagship Genesis XC is the extra-coverage large-fit frame, the Avatar is the mid-profile all-rounder, and the Millennia is the classic economy wraparound. Prescription wearers take the Astro OTG. Browse the full Uvex safety glasses collection, and the best safety glasses 2026 roundup places the line against other brands.

Where it fits by job and crew orders

The slim comfortable fit suits general industry, assembly, and long-shift trades — the construction, manufacturing, and mechanics guides rank frames by task, and smaller-faced wearers should check the small-face guide and women's fit guide since the slim frame runs compact. Where the hazard exceeds impact — splash, dust, vapor — step to a sealed goggle from the safety goggles collection or the broader eye protection collection. For crew orders, quantity purchasing runs through a free Amazon Business account — volume pricing, PO numbers at checkout, and tax-exempt eligibility for qualifying organizations, with the walkthrough linked in our footer.

My go-to day driving glasses
These glasses have unique frame that allows better airflow around the lens, and combined with the coating makes them very resistant to fogging. The lens tint is color enhancing, sunsets look great, and they have a good level of light reduction. The floating frame also makes them fit better, and they do not even come close to slipping off when my head is facing down. They are inexpensive and good quality if you do not need a prescription lens.A pro or a con is they are not polarized, pro being they do not mess with LCD screens, con being they do not block reflective glare. This lens color is also not V0 impact rated, unlike the clear, grey, and amber lenses.

Lightweight, with nice grip
While I understand that these are probably designed to be safety goggles, they also make very nice sunglasses, which is how I use them. The material is very light, which makes them easy on the bridge of the nose. The arms are also very flexible, allowing them to fit various head sizes, but also provide a strong grip that prevents them from slipping or sliding out of place. This is especially important for tasks that require looking down, since with these glasses, there's no need to re-adjust when you look back up. Little things make all the difference. I've bookmarked this item so that if I ever need another (I bought a spare set to keep around just in case), it's only a click away.

Lightweight and comfortable over many hours of wear
For decades, I've worked in an industry which requires the wearing of safety glasses. During that time, I have worn a lot of different brands and styles of glasses. Some of the glasses were long term wear types purchased through optometry shops. Most of the glasses purchased were those which were ultimately disposable. For most of those years, I was the purchasing manager. By far, the glasses I liked best (and which were most popular with my associates) were from UVEX...the Protege. They were lightweight, comfortable (all the way through a 12-hour shift), didn't slip off your nose, and were hard to fog up. I have kept some other brands in stock, but Protege usage easily outpaced all the other brands combined. One last note, they don't scratch easily, but don't let Off or Cutters mosquito repellent get on the lenses...they will be toast.

Best safety glasses
This model safety glasses has proven to be the best. The way the lenses are sitauted they hardly ever fog and they arent as prone to sweat dripping on them and making it hard to see. These lenses are also made if some type of special coating that makes water or sweat run off them like rain-x does on windows. If you are in an environment where you mkust wear safety glasses at all times these are a must they are very light and very confortable. They also come in different shades. Great price too. Cant beat them dollar for dollar they are the best.

Nice cheap specs
They aren't quite the color tone I expected having seen other spectrum control gray lenses but they seem like a prototype of that technology and fit my massive head so I can't really complain. The field of view is a bit too narrow though so they end up playing more of a fashion role then light blocking one though I can fit them under a helmet and gas mask so I guess this is the niche they where meant for. B+ would get an A if the tone was right or the view angle blocked more light from above/beneath but with bot being off can't go over 3 stars. Solid honeywell quality though

Nice safeties, but the lenses aren't amazing
Based on the description I thought these were some sort of miracle glasses, but it turns out the lenses get gunk on them like any other, and now have minor smears after just a few weeks of use. Nothing wrong with them, but nothing special either.

Ten years of use and no plans to change!
I've been using this style of glasses for at least ten years now. Always my go-to during 12hr shifts at work(but with lighter tint). About 6yrs ago I discovered the availability of this particular dark lens. I love the way they make the world look. Clouds, sky & sunsets look amazing thru these. Rocked them through 1000s of open air miles in Jeep, my motorcycles, bicycles or in foot. Over time they get beat up. But they're so cheap I just keep a few in my PPE basket in closet. Old ones end up with paddleboard or eBike. New goes to Jeep. I hope they never get discontinued. I'd never be able to go outside again;)

Best. Safety. Glasses. Ever.
These are by far the most comfortable and well constructed safety glasses I have ever worn. One pair fell off my shirt where I hung them during a down time as I was walking. I stepped on them and heard a crunch. I figured, “Well, there goes another pair!” Not so. I picked up the two pieces, looked at them for a confused 10 seconds and snapped the pieces back together. They are light enough you could go to lunch and forget you are wearing them, been there done that. Some other styles that are provided by job sites I have been to are stiff and sit too rigid on your face these leave funny marks on your face, fog up when you really need them not to, and feel like you’re wearing a monocle. Not this pair. Please never change these or make them obsolete.
