What to check before you buy
Gauge and grounding decide safety, not the jacket colour. Voltage drop rises with length and falls with gauge, so a 100-ft run needs heavier copper than the same load at 25 ft. On construction sites, OSHA 29 CFR 1926.404(b)(1) requires GFCI protection on all 120-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles not part of the permanent wiring — or a documented assured equipment grounding conductor program in its place.
