What the 3M Secure Click D9093 P100 Respirator Filter Does
It captures particulate β at least 99.97% of solid and liquid aerosols, oil and non-oil, which is the highest efficiency class in the NIOSH scheme. It fits the Secure Click platform, the HF-800 half facepiece and FF-800 full facepiece, and nothing else. What sets it apart from the rest of the P100 range is the hard plastic case around the media: 3M builds it for harsh environments and easy decontamination, protecting the filter from sparks, high heat, debris and decontamination spray showers β precisely the conditions that finish an exposed pad.
Against the soft-media D3091 β the same P100 class without the case β the D9093 trades a little bulk for durability, and it is the right pick anywhere sparks, heat or washdown are present. What it is and is not: The plain D9093 is particulate only β no nuisance organic vapour or acid gas relief, and no hydrogen fluoride feature. The D9093CB adds nuisance acid gas relief; the D9093C adds HF-resistant media plus nuisance relief. Crucially, even the D9093C's HF feature is filter media resistance plus nuisance relief, not gas protection at exposure levels β for hydrogen fluoride gas at or above the PEL you need a Secure Click acid gas cartridge such as the D3078's rated cousins or a gas cartridge, not any hard-case filter. A P100 filters no gas of any kind, including carbon monoxide and welding ozone. It fits Secure Click only β mixing platforms voids the assembly approval. Never use any air-purifying respirator in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere or one that is IDLH, filters cannot be washed or blown clean, and fit testing with a clean-shaven seal remains a prerequisite.
The Hard Case, and Why Plain P100 Is the Point
Two things define this filter, and both are about simplicity. The first is the hard case. A soft filter pad is the cheapest, lightest way to carry P100 media, but it has no defense against a spark, a knock, radiant heat, or a decon shower β any of which ends its service life. The hard case exists for the work where those are routine: remediation with washdown, hot cutting and grinding, foundry-adjacent tasks, emergency response. If your environment is clean and dry, you do not need it; if it is harsh, the case is the difference between a filter that lasts the shift and one that does not.
The second is that it is plain P100 with no sorbent layer, and that is a feature rather than a gap. The Secure Click range offers filters with nuisance odour relief and HF-resistant media, but those add cost and a comfort layer you may not need. If your hazard is purely particulate β lead, asbestos, cadmium, silica, metal fume β rugged plain P100 is exactly the right tool, and paying for relief you will not use is not an upgrade. What does the hard case protect against?
Sparks, high heat, debris and decontamination showers. 3M builds the case around the media specifically for harsh environments and for easy decontamination β the conditions that finish a soft filter pad. A spark burns a soft pad, heat degrades it, and a decon spray shower soaks it, whereas the hard case shrugs all three off. If your work throws sparks or you walk through a decon shower before doffing, the case is the reason to choose this over a soft filter.
How is it different from the soft D3091?
Same P100 class, different construction. The D3091 is the soft-media filter using Advanced Electrostatic Media; the D9093 wraps its P100 media in a hard plastic case. They protect against the same particulate to the same 99.97% efficiency β the difference is durability. Choose the D9093 where sparks, heat or washdown would destroy a soft filter, and the D3091 where those are not present and you want a lighter, lower-profile filter.
Does it have any gas or odour relief?
No β the plain D9093 is particulate only. There is no nuisance organic vapour or acid gas relief in it. If you want a hard-case P100 with nuisance acid gas relief, that is the D9093CB; if you want hydrogen-fluoride-resistant media, that is the D9093C. Where you actually need nuisance odour relief in a Secure Click filter, the P95 D3078 carries organic vapour and acid gas relief; the plain D9093 is the one to buy when you need rugged P100 particulate protection and nothing else.
Is the D9093C's hydrogen fluoride feature the same as HF gas protection?
No, and this is a critical distinction. The D9093C's HF feature is filter media resistance plus nuisance-level acid gas relief β it handles HF-laden particulate and low-level acidic odour. It is not gas protection at exposure levels. For hydrogen fluoride gas at or above the permissible exposure limit you need a Secure Click acid gas cartridge, not any hard-case filter. The plain D9093 has no HF feature at all.
What particulate hazards is P100 the right class for?
P100 is the highest particulate efficiency class and the correct choice for the serious dusts and fumes β lead, asbestos, cadmium, arsenic, MDA, silica, and metal fume among them. If a P95 is enough for your dust, the Secure Click D3071 is the lighter option; step up to P100 for the regulated hazards. The filter is one control within each substance's own regulatory program, though: those hazards carry OSHA standards with exposure assessment, controls and medical surveillance requirements that a correct filter does not by itself satisfy.
Does it filter any gases?
None. A P100 is a particulate filter β it captures particles and adsorbs no gas or vapour. That includes carbon monoxide, solvent vapour, and the ozone a welding arc generates. Note that some sorbent-bearing filters, such as the bayonet 2097, carry a specific ozone recommendation; the plain D9093 does not, because it has no sorbent layer. For any gas exposure you need the appropriate gas cartridge.
Does it fit 3M bayonet respirators?
No. The D9093 is a Secure Click filter for the HF-800 half facepiece and FF-800 full facepiece, which use a push-and-lock connection. 3M's bayonet respirators β the 6000, 7000 and FF-400 Series β use a different fitting and their own filter range. NIOSH approval covers the respirator and filter as a tested assembly, so components must not be mixed across platforms even where they appear to seat.
Can it survive a decontamination shower?
That is one of the conditions the hard case is designed for. 3M lists easy decontamination among the reasons for the hard case, which matters in remediation, chemical handling and emergency response where workers walk through a shower before removing their equipment. Follow your site's decontamination procedure for what happens to the filter afterward β surviving the shower is not automatically the same as being cleared for continued use.
How does high heat resistance help?
It lets the filter work in spark-and-heat environments where an exposed pad would ignite or degrade β foundry-adjacent work, hot cutting, grinding. The hard case takes the radiant heat and stray sparks that would ruin soft media. That said, heat tolerance of the case is not a license for any thermal environment; the respirator facepiece has its own limits, and those may be reached before the filter's.
When should it be replaced?
On a rise in breathing resistance as the media loads, on any damage to the case or media, or on your workplace change schedule β whichever comes first. There is no end-of-service-life indicator on a particulate filter, and unlike a gas cartridge there is no odour breakthrough to warn you, so increasing breathing resistance is your main in-use signal that the media is loading up.
Do both filters get replaced together?
Yes. They are worn as a matched pair and load at the same rate, so replacing one leaves uneven breathing resistance and an unknown remaining life on the older side. Running a fresh filter against a spent one also means the fresh side does more of the breathing work than intended, which is not what you want mid-task.
Can a loaded filter be washed or blown out?
No. Washing saturates the media and compressed air drives particles deeper or opens holes through it, and either way the NIOSH approval no longer applies β the hard case protects the media in use but does not make it cleanable. Filters are consumables. Replace them rather than attempting to recover them, however lightly used one looks.
