What the 3M Secure Click D3071 P95 Particulate Filter Is

It is the entry P95 particulate filter for the Secure Click platform, NIOSH-approved to capture at least 95% of solid and liquid aerosols, oil and non-oil, using 3M's Advanced Electrostatic Media (AEM) and a dual-flow design. That is the same low-resistance media and easy-breathing geometry as the P100 D3091 — the difference is efficiency: P95 captures 95% where P100 captures 99.97%. For the many jobs where 95% meets your exposure needs, the D3071 breathes a little easier and costs less than a P100.

It is plain P95 — particulate only, no gas, vapour or nuisance relief. For odour comfort on a P95 there is the nuisance-relief D3078; for higher efficiency, the P100 D3091 or the nuisance-OV D3097; for actual gas, a rated cartridge like the D8001. What it is and is not: The D3071 is P95 — at least 95% efficiency, a lower class than the P100 filters (D3091/D3097 at 99.97%); step up to P100 where the higher efficiency is needed or required. As a P-class filter it is oil-resistant with no time limit, unlike an N95. It is particulate only — no gas, vapour or nuisance relief (the D3078 adds those on the same P95 base) — and has no sorbent, so it filters no gas at all, including carbon monoxide and ozone. It is the soft-media filter, not the hard-cased D9093. It fits Secure Click HF-800 / FF-800 only. Never use any air-purifying respirator in an oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmosphere, it is not washable, and a fit test with a clean-shaven seal is required.

P95 vs P100: Choosing the Right Efficiency

The one decision that defines this filter is P95 versus P100, and it comes down to efficiency, not oil resistance — both classes handle oil. A P95 captures at least 95% of airborne particulate; a P100 captures at least 99.97%. For a great many dusts and fumes — general mineral dust, grain, cotton, welding fume, oil mist — 95% comfortably meets the exposure need, and the D3071 gives you that at a lower cost and with slightly easier breathing, since a P95 medium is a touch less restrictive than a P100. It is the sensible everyday particulate filter when your hazard does not demand the top efficiency class.

Step up to the P100 D3091 when the substance or your workplace assessment calls for the highest efficiency — some regulated hazards specify P100, and where the margin matters you want the 99.97%. The honest rule is to match the class to the substance and its exposure limit: do not over-buy P100 where P95 covers the job, and do not under-buy P95 where the assessment says P100. One useful reassurance on the D3071: as a P-series filter it is oil-proof, so unlike an N95 it is not disqualified by oil aerosols — the only thing P95 gives up to P100 is that last slice of efficiency. What is P95, and how is it different from P100?

P95 means the filter captures at least 95% of airborne particulate; P100 captures at least 99.97%. Both classes cover oil and non-oil particles, so the only difference is efficiency. The D3071 is the P95; the D3091 is the P100 on the same Secure Click platform. P95 is enough for a great many dusts and fumes and breathes a little easier for it, while P100 is the choice where the extra efficiency is needed or required.

Does the D3071 handle oil-based particulate?

Yes. The P in P95 stands for oil-proof — it is strongly oil-resistant with no time limit, so it can be used for oil-based particles such as oil mists and some sprays, as well as non-oil dusts. That is a real difference from an N95, which is not oil-resistant at all. So the D3071 covers oil aerosols; its P95 class is about efficiency (95%), not about whether it tolerates oil.

When is P95 enough, and when do I need P100?

P95 suits many general dusts and fumes — minerals, coal, grain, cotton, welding fume, oil mists — where 95% capture meets your exposure needs. Step up to the P100 D3091 when your hazard is one where the highest efficiency matters or is required: some regulated substances, and workplaces whose assessment specifies P100. Match the class to the substance and its exposure limit; where P95 covers it, the D3071 is the lighter, cheaper choice.

Does it have any gas or odour relief?

No — the D3071 is the plain P95, particulate only. There is no organic vapour, acid gas or nuisance odour relief. If you want odour comfort on a P95, the D3078 adds nuisance organic-vapour and acid-gas relief on the same base; for actual gas protection you need a rated cartridge such as the D8001. The plain D3071 is the one to buy when your hazard is purely particulate and P95 efficiency is enough.

What is the dual-flow AEM media?

The D3071 uses 3M's Advanced Electrostatic Media — charged microfibres in an open formation that capture particles by charge while letting air pass freely — in a dual-flow design that gives four airflow paths across a pair. Together they lower breathing resistance, the same comfort technology as the P100 D3091. At the P95 class the media is a touch less restrictive still, so the D3071 is one of the easier Secure Click filters to breathe through.

Does it filter any gases, like ozone?

No. The D3071 is a plain particulate filter with no sorbent layer, so it captures particles and no gas of any kind — not carbon monoxide, not solvent vapour, and not ozone. Some sorbent-bearing Secure Click filters, such as the D3078, carry a nuisance relief and an ozone recommendation, but the plain D3071 does not, because it has nothing to adsorb gas. For any gas or ozone exposure you need the appropriate cartridge or a sorbent filter.

Which respirators does it fit?

The Secure Click HF-800 half facepiece and FF-800 full facepiece. It uses the push-and-click Secure Click connection, not the bayonet fitting, so it does not fit the 3M 6000, 6500 or 7500 masks. NIOSH approval covers the mask and filter as a tested assembly, so keep Secure Click filters on Secure Click masks even if a bayonet part appears to seat. It is worn as a pair, one filter on each side.

How is it different from the hard-case D9093?

The D3071 is the soft-media, lightweight everyday filter; the D9093 is a hard-cased P100 that resists sparks, high heat, debris and decontamination showers. They differ in both efficiency class and construction — the D3071 is P95 soft media, the D9093 is P100 in a hard case. Choose the D3071 for general P95 particulate work, and the D9093 where you need P100 efficiency and a case that survives harsh conditions.

What is it good for?

P95 particulate: minerals, coal, iron ore, grain and flour, cotton and other general dusts, oil mists and sprays, and metal fume from welding, brazing and cutting. It is a broad, everyday particulate filter for the many jobs where 95% efficiency is enough and you want easy breathing at a lower cost. Where a substance needs the highest efficiency, move up to the P100 D3091 instead.

Can I wash or reuse a loaded filter?

No. Washing saturates the media and compressed air drives particles deeper or holes it, and either way the NIOSH approval no longer applies. The AEM electrostatic charge that does much of the capturing can also be degraded by improper handling and some contaminants, so a mistreated filter can lose efficiency without visible damage. Filters are consumables — replace them rather than trying to clean or recover them.

When should it be replaced?

On a rise in breathing resistance as the media loads, on any damage to the filter, or on your workplace change schedule — whichever comes first. There is no end-of-service-life indicator on a particulate filter and no odour breakthrough to warn you, so increasing breathing effort is your main in-use cue. Replace the pair together so both sides share the same remaining life.

Do I replace both filters together?

Yes. They are worn as a matched pair and load at the same rate, so a fresh filter run against a partly spent one gives uneven breathing resistance and an unknown remaining life on the older side. Change the pair together on your schedule, which keeps the dual-flow breathing balanced across both sides.

What does it not protect against?

Any gas or vapour — it is particulate only, with no sorbent — so no carbon monoxide, no solvent vapour, no ozone. It cannot add oxygen, so it is useless in a low-oxygen space, and it must never be used in an atmosphere immediately dangerous to life or health. It protects only as well as the mask seals, so a fit test and a clean-shaven seal are prerequisites. It is a P95 particulate filter, matched to a particulate hazard, and nothing more.
