What the 3M Secure Click D3097 P100 Filter Does

It is a P100 particulate filter — at least 99.97% of oil and non-oil aerosols — with an activated-carbon layer added for nuisance-level organic vapour relief, on the Secure Click HF-800 and FF-800 platform. Over a plain P100 like the D3091, it adds comfort against solvent odour, and 3M goes further: it recommends the D3097 for ozone up to ten times the OSHA PEL. That pairing — particulate plus odour plus low-level ozone — is aimed squarely at welding, grinding, sanding and metalworking, where all three occur together.

It is dual-flow like the rest of the Secure Click range, so a pair gives four airflow paths for easier breathing. It sits between the plain D3091 and the nuisance-acid-gas D3096, and it is the Secure Click version of the bayonet 2097. The Welding Filter, and the Ozone Recommendation Explained

Welding is the D3097's home ground because it produces exactly the mix this filter is built for: metal fume a P100 captures, solvent-type vapours the nuisance carbon layer relieves, and low-level ozone from the arc. That last one is worth dwelling on, because most particulate filters do nothing about ozone at all — and the D3097 is one of the exceptions 3M specifically recommends for it, up to 10× the PEL. If you have worn a plain P100 for welding and still caught that sharp ozone smell, the D3097 is the reason to switch.

The precision matters, though, and it is easy to overstate. The filter's NIOSH certification is P100 particulate — the ozone coverage is 3M's own recommendation, not a NIOSH gas approval, and the organic-vapour layer is nuisance-level, not rated. So the honest claim is: a P100 filter that 3M recommends for ozone to 10× the PEL and that relieves nuisance organic-vapour odour — not an "ozone-rated" or "OV-rated" respirator. What does the D3097 add over a plain P100?

An activated-carbon layer for nuisance-level organic vapour relief, on top of full P100 particulate filtration. The plain Secure Click P100 (the D3091) captures particulate only; the D3097 adds comfort relief from the smell of organic vapour and — by 3M's recommendation — from low-level ozone. It is the filter for work that throws both particulate and a whiff of solvent or ozone, like welding, where a plain P100 leaves the odour untouched.

Is the organic vapour relief rated protection?

No — it is nuisance-level relief only. That means comfort against the odour of organic vapour at concentrations not exceeding the OSHA permissible exposure limit. It is not rated OV protection and carries no gas approval. If your organic vapour is at a level that needs protection rather than odour relief, you need a rated gas cartridge such as the Secure Click D8001, not this filter. Treating nuisance relief as gas protection is the mistake to avoid.

Does it really protect against ozone?

3M specifically recommends the D3097 for ozone protection up to ten times the OSHA PEL — which is a genuine and unusual capability for a particulate filter. Frame it precisely, though: the NIOSH approval is P100 particulate, and the ozone coverage is 3M's recommendation, not a NIOSH gas approval. So it is correct to say it is recommended for ozone to 10x the PEL, and incorrect to call it "ozone rated". For welding, that ozone recommendation is a real practical benefit.

What is the dual-flow design?

Each Secure Click filter has two airflow paths, so a pair on a respirator gives four — 3M's quad-flow arrangement — which lowers breathing resistance. Over a shift, easier breathing is less fatigue. How is it different from the D3096?

They are the same P100 base with a different nuisance layer. The D3097 gives nuisance organic vapour relief (and the ozone recommendation); the D3096 gives nuisance acid gas relief. Choose the D3097 for solvent-vapour and welding odour, and the D3096 where the nuisance is acid gas. Both are nuisance-level comfort layers, not rated gas protection — the choice is which odour you want relief from.

Is this a good filter for welding?

It is one of the better fits. Welding produces metal fume that a P100 captures, plus solvent-type vapours and low-level ozone that the nuisance layer and the ozone recommendation address — so the D3097 covers the mix in a single filter. 3M lists welding, brazing, cutting, grinding and metalworking among its uses. Where welding also generates a gas at real exposure levels, you still add the appropriate rated cartridge.

How does it compare to the bayonet 2097?

They are the same idea on different platforms. The 2097 is the bayonet P100 with nuisance organic vapour relief and the same ozone recommendation, for 3M 6000/7500-series masks; the D3097 is the Secure Click version for HF-800 and FF-800 masks, with the dual-flow breathing advantage. Choose by the respirator you run — you match the filter to your mask, not the other way round. The protection story is essentially the same.

Which respirators does it fit?

The Secure Click HF-800 half facepiece and FF-800 full facepiece only. It uses the push-and-click Secure Click connection, not the bayonet fitting, so it does not fit the 3M 6000, 6500 or 7500 bayonet masks — those take the 2097 instead. NIOSH approval covers the mask and filter as a tested assembly, so keep Secure Click filters on Secure Click masks even if a bayonet part appears to seat.

When should it be replaced?

On a rise in breathing resistance as the P100 media loads, on any damage, when the nuisance relief stops managing the odour, or on your workplace change schedule — whichever comes first. There is no end-of-service-life indicator for the particulate side, so increasing breathing effort is the main cue, and returning odour tells you the carbon layer is spent. Replace the pair together so both sides share the same life.

Does the carbon layer wear out separately?

Effectively yes — the P100 media loads with particulate over time, while the activated carbon is consumed as it adsorbs vapour and ozone. In practice you replace the whole filter when either signals: rising breathing resistance from the particulate side, or the return of organic-vapour odour from the spent carbon. Do not keep using it for the P100 protection after the odour relief has gone if odour control is part of why you chose it.

Can I wash or reuse a loaded filter?

No. Washing soaks the media and compressed air drives particles deeper or holes it, and either way the NIOSH P100 approval no longer holds; the carbon is likewise spent once it stops relieving odour. The Secure Click housing protects the media in use but does not make the filter cleanable. Filters are consumables — replace a loaded pair rather than trying to recover it.

Do I replace both filters together?

Yes. They are worn as a matched pair and load at the same rate, so a fresh filter against a partly spent one gives uneven breathing and an unknown remaining life on the older side. Change the pair together on your schedule, which keeps the quad-flow breathing balanced across both sides and the odour relief consistent.

What does it not protect against?

Organic vapour or ozone at real exposure levels — the relief is nuisance-level comfort only — and it stops no carbon monoxide or gas outside that. It cannot add oxygen, so it is useless in a low-oxygen space, and it must never be used in an atmosphere immediately dangerous to life or health.
