An air-purifying respirator filters air, it does not supply any. Under 29 CFR 1910.134 no air-purifying respirator may be worn in an atmosphere that is IDLH or oxygen-deficient (below 19.5% oxygen). Those conditions require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA, and no filter or cartridge rating changes that.
The 3M 2096 P100 respirator filter is a NIOSH-approved P100 particulate filter with nuisance-level acid gas relief on the standard 3M bayonet connection, sold and used as a pair. When NOT to Use the 3M 2096

- Do not use it for organic vapors, solvents, or paint fumes β use the 3M 2097 or 3M 2297 for nuisance organic vapor odor, or the 3M 60921 OV/P100 cartridge for painting.
- Do not use it in IDLH, oxygen-deficient, or unknown atmospheres β no filter or cartridge adds oxygen; these require supplied air or SCBA.
