Which respirators does it fit?

Keep bayonet filters on bayonet masks, as NIOSH approval covers the facepiece and filter as a tested assembly.
Can I attach it directly, or do I need a retainer?
The 2297 attaches directly to a 3M bayonet cartridge or facepiece β it is a self-contained filter, not a pad that needs the 501 retainer. That is the same as the 2097 and 2091. You only use the 501 retainer with the pad-style pre-filters like the 5N11; the 2200 and 2000 Series P100 filters clip straight on. So there is nothing extra to buy to fit the 2297.
Is it good for welding?
It is one of the better particulate choices for welding. Welding throws metal fume that a P100 captures, plus solvent-type vapours and low-level ozone that the nuisance layer and ozone recommendation address β and the advanced media's easier breathing helps on long welding and grinding sessions. 3M lists mining, shipbuilding, abatement and utilities among its uses too. Where welding drives a gas to real exposure levels, you still add the appropriate rated cartridge.
Can I wash or reuse a loaded filter?
No. Washing soaks the media and compressed air drives particles deeper or holes it, and either way the NIOSH P100 approval no longer applies; the carbon layer is likewise spent once it stops relieving odour. The advanced media resists loading longer but is not cleanable. Filters are consumables β replace a loaded pair rather than trying to recover it. Its longer life comes from the media, not from being washable.
When should it be replaced?
On a rise in breathing resistance as the media loads, on any damage, when the nuisance relief stops managing the odour, or on your workplace change schedule β whichever comes first. There is no end-of-service-life indicator for the particulate side, so harder breathing is the main cue, and returning organic-vapour odour tells you the carbon is spent. The advanced media typically loads more slowly, but you still change on these signals, and replace the pair together.
Is it worth paying more than the 2097?
It depends on your use. For standard, intermittent industrial work the 2097 protects identically for less. For long shifts, heavy particulate, or extended welding and grinding, the 2297's easier breathing and longer field-trial life can justify the extra cost β you breathe with less effort and change filters less often. Weigh how much time you spend in the respirator: the more, the stronger the case for the advanced-media 2297.
What does it not protect against?
Organic vapour or ozone at real exposure levels β the relief is nuisance-level comfort only β and it stops no carbon monoxide or gas outside that. It cannot add oxygen, so it is useless in a low-oxygen space, and it must never be used in an atmosphere immediately dangerous to life or health.
