Works great for allergy season
Favorite filter for ragweed allergy season. I can actually go to work and not get sick. Since I am severely allergic to ragweed, as my children say, you don't go to the doctor often, and you don't go to the emergency room at all. It worked great for going into my house after a house fire. I could smell the burnt items, but I did not develop a cough or anything. The mask cleans well and did not retain the burnt smell. I tossed the filters and I already have new filters for this fall. It is easier to breath with this filter system compared to a N95 mask, and you can replace the filters. I keep my mask in a plastic bag and usually just use one set for the entire three months without problem. I did lose one filter once, so I keep an extra set for back up. Holding your hand over the filter site did not work as well as the filter!Now I just need a Darth Vader t shirt to wear when out in public......

Zero breathing labor from a P100 filter.
I found it hard to believe these were P100 rated by how easy it is to breath with these filters. I honestly thought there was a leak until I tested my mask - no leak. You can wear a respirator all day with zero breathing labor. Absolutely the best P100 filter I have used to date from that standpoint. I can’t speak to how well these filter from an analytical standpoint - but from what I can tell from use, nothing but clean air seems to come through them. Zero smell from the filters I’ve used to date as well.

As good as it gets short of a PAPR.
I am involved in remediation and abatement. These trades almost always involve PPE, since it may or will make you sick to inhale some of the items we're working with. That having been said, respiratory protection is essential. There is a disparity between making available proper respiratory protection and whether people will be using it. Also to consider is how quickly laborers will fatigue due to their respirator (additional exertions of having to draw breath through the filter media).The 3M Advanced Particulate Filter 2297 is a step in the right direction over the 3M 2097. I place a high value on employee comfort, as I believe it's tied to productivity. Make it easier for people to breathe, and they can get more work done. Less likely to find them without their respirators, too. OV relief means that you don't have to smell things you're working on. Smells which this has successfully extinguished include: the stench of death (animals and people), the ripe smell of someone who's been wearing a tyvek coverall for a full work shift and most disinfectants and detergents.I bought some of these here for testing, but the price is too high for regular use. Can be found significantly cheaper in bulk (cases of 100 packages of 2 each).

Easier breathing, not very sturdy, less vapor relief.
The 2297 is an excellent investment for a worker who requires a P100 respirator with less restricted airflow. My 3 star rating is based on my different needs and experience.I have been using the 3M 2097 filters for allergy protection from wood smoke (Creosote), welding fumes fresh cut grass and various other vapors.The strength of the 2297 is that it requires less effort to inhale. To me it is not a significant difference but my lungs are strong as I ride my bicycle up and down mountains here in Northern NY. The 2297 could make a huge difference for an older person or someone with respiratory problems. I think the 2297 is a good investment in this situation.The other plus is that the 2297 not so attention getting as the bright magenta 2097. It is a bother to explain to the neighbors when outside gardening with the 2097 which has that Hazmat / Meth Lab chic look.The downside of the 2297 is that it is nowhere as sturdy as the 2097. This is important if you frequently wash your respirator which I do after every use and even more often in hot sweaty conditions. These just become limp after several remove and install cycles. This may alter the effectiveness of the filter. I know the 2097 lasts me way longer than the suggested period recommend by 3M and stays firm.The 2297 has a fine plastic magenta colored mesh on the outside of the filter. The ends of the mesh filaments protrude from the edge of the filer just enough to be annoying when wearing a hood. The filaments catch the hood fleece.The 2297 felt like it was providing less organic vapor relief. This is a rather subjective judgment and hard to duplicate. Cutting the two different filters open, there is a thinner charcoal layer in the 2297 but appears to be constructed differently. I think the 2297 does provide adequate relief for most situations. If organic vapors are an issue, then you need a filter labeled for "Organic Vapor Protection" and not "Relief".The easier breathing of the 2297 is worth evaluating in spite of my negative remarks, it just may help improve your productivity.
