What the 3M 2071 P95 Respirator Filter Is
It is the entry P95 particulate filter for the 3M bayonet platform, NIOSH-approved to capture at least 95% of solid and liquid aerosols, oil and non-oil. It fits the 6000, 6500, 7500, 7800S and FF-400 reusable respirators and mounts directly to the bayonet — on the facepiece for particulate only, or over a gas cartridge to add dust protection — with no retainer or extra part. As a P-class filter it is oil-resistant with no time limit, unlike an N95, so it covers oil mists as well as dusts.
Its efficiency is the one thing that sets it apart from the rest of the family: P95 captures 95%, where the P100 2091 captures 99.97%. For general dust the 2071 is the lighter, cheaper choice; for lead, asbestos or a substance needing the top efficiency, step up to the 2091. As a P-class filter it is oil-resistant with no time limit, unlike an N95. It is particulate only — no gas, vapour or nuisance relief — and has no sorbent, so it filters no gas at all, including carbon monoxide and ozone. It attaches directly to the bayonet — no 501 retainer needed (that is for pad filters like the 5N11). It fits 3M bayonet respirators only, not Secure Click. Never use any air-purifying respirator in an oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmosphere, it is not washable, and a fit test with a clean-shaven seal is required.
P95 vs P100: the Efficiency Choice
The decision that defines this filter is P95 versus P100, and it comes down to efficiency, not oil resistance — both classes handle oil. A P95 captures at least 95% of airborne particulate; a P100 captures at least 99.97%. For general-purpose dust — sanding, grinding, wood and drywall dust, nuisance dusts and oil mists — 95% comfortably meets the exposure need, and the 2071 gives you that at the lowest cost in the 2000 Series and with slightly easier breathing, since a P95 medium is a touch less restrictive than a P100. It is the sensible everyday particulate filter for a bayonet mask when your hazard does not demand the top class.
Step up to the P100 2091 when the substance calls for the highest efficiency — 3M specifically recommends the P100 over the 2071 for lead and asbestos, and your workplace assessment may specify P100 for other regulated hazards. The honest rule is to match the class to the substance and its exposure limit: do not under-buy P95 where the assessment says P100, and do not over-buy P100 where P95 covers the job. And do not write the 2071 off for oil — as a P-series filter it is oil-proof, so unlike an N95 it is not disqualified by oil aerosols; the only thing it gives up to the 2091 is that last slice of efficiency. What is P95, and how is it different from P100?
P95 captures at least 95% of airborne particulate; P100 captures at least 99.97%. Both classes cover oil and non-oil particles, so the only difference is efficiency. The 2071 is the P95; the 2091 is the P100 on the same bayonet platform. P95 is enough for general dusts and breathes a little easier for it, while P100 is the choice where the extra efficiency is needed — for lead, asbestos and similar, 3M recommends the P100 2091 over the 2071.
Does the 2071 handle oil-based particulate?
Yes. The P in P95 stands for oil-proof — it is strongly oil-resistant with no time limit, so it can be used for oil-based particles such as oil mists as well as non-oil dusts. That is a real difference from an N95, which is not oil-resistant at all. So the 2071 covers oil aerosols; its P95 class is about efficiency (95%), not about whether it tolerates oil.
When is P95 enough, and when do I need P100?

Does it have any gas or odour relief?
No — the 2071 is the plain P95, particulate only. There is no organic vapour, acid gas or nuisance odour relief. If you want a P100 with nuisance organic-vapour relief, that is the 2097; for actual gas protection you need a rated cartridge such as the 6001. The plain 2071 is the one to buy when your hazard is purely particulate and P95 efficiency is enough.
Which respirators does it fit?
3M bayonet respirators — the 6000, 6500, 7500 and 7800S half and full facepieces and the FF-400 Series — using the twin bayonet connection. It does not fit the Secure Click HF-800 or FF-800 respirators, which use a different push-lock connection; the Secure Click P95 equivalent is the D3071. Keep bayonet filters on bayonet masks, as NIOSH approval covers the facepiece and filter as a tested assembly.
Does it filter any gases, like ozone?
No. The 2071 is a plain particulate filter with no sorbent layer, so it captures particles and no gas of any kind — not carbon monoxide, not solvent vapour, and not ozone. Some sorbent-bearing bayonet filters, such as the 2097, carry a nuisance relief and a 3M ozone recommendation, but the plain 2071 does not, because it has nothing to adsorb gas. For any gas or ozone exposure you need a cartridge or a sorbent filter.
Do I need the 501 retainer to fit it?
No — the 2071 attaches directly to the bayonet on the facepiece, or over a gas cartridge, with nothing extra. It is a self-contained filter, not a filter pad. The 501 retainer is only for pad-style pre-filters like the 5N11, which are not standalone. So the 2071 clips straight on, and there is nothing additional to buy to use it.
Can I mount it over a gas cartridge?
Yes — like the other 2000 Series filters, the 2071 can go on the facepiece alone for particulate only, or over a compatible 3M bayonet gas cartridge to add particulate protection on top of the gas cartridge's coverage. That is how you cover a combined gas-and-dust hazard on a bayonet mask. Match the cartridge to the gas and the 2071 to the particulate, and confirm the stack is a NIOSH-approved combination.
What is it good for?
General-purpose P95 particulate: sanding and grinding dust, wood and drywall dust, general nuisance and non-toxic dusts, and oil mists, on a 3M bayonet respirator. It is the economical everyday particulate filter for the many jobs where 95% efficiency is enough. For lead, asbestos or a substance needing the highest efficiency, move up to the P100 2091 instead.
Can I wash or reuse a loaded filter?
No. Washing saturates the media and compressed air drives particles deeper or holes it, and either way the NIOSH approval no longer applies. Particulate filters are consumables — replace them rather than trying to clean or recover them. The 2071 is inexpensive, so there is little reason to risk a compromised filter; fit a fresh pair when the old one loads up or is damaged.
When should it be replaced?
On a rise in breathing resistance as the media loads, on any damage to the filter, or on your workplace change schedule — whichever comes first. There is no end-of-service-life indicator on a particulate filter and no odour breakthrough to warn you, so increasing breathing effort is your main in-use cue. Replace the pair together so both sides share the same remaining life.
Do I replace both filters together?
Yes. They are worn as a matched pair and load at the same rate, so a fresh filter run against a partly spent one gives uneven breathing resistance and an unknown remaining life on the older side. Change the pair together on your schedule so the mask breathes evenly across both sides.
What does it not protect against?
Any gas or vapour — it is particulate only, with no sorbent — so no carbon monoxide, no solvent vapour, no ozone. It cannot add oxygen, so it is useless in a low-oxygen space, and it must never be used in an atmosphere immediately dangerous to life or health. It protects only as well as the mask seals, so a fit test and a clean-shaven seal are prerequisites. It is a P95 particulate filter, matched to a particulate hazard, and nothing more.
