NIOSH Approved P95

The 3M 5P71 P95 Pre-Filter is an oil-resistant particulate pad that layers over a 3M 6000-series gas or vapor cartridge β€” held by the 3M 501 filter retainer β€” to add P95 particulate protection and extend the cartridge's service life. It lives in our respirator filters and cartridges range as the low-cost way to protect a chemical cartridge from dust and mist.

The single most important thing to know before you buy: the 5P71 is not a direct-attach filter. It has no bayonet of its own and cannot mount without the 3M 501 retainer. Below we cover how the pieces fit together, what P95 does and does not cover, and where you need a P100 instead.

As an Amazon Associate, WC Safety earns from qualifying purchases. This does not affect the price you pay.

What the 3M 5P71 P95 Pre-Filter Does

The 5P71 is a thin, NIOSH-approved P95 particulate pad β€” 95% efficient and oil-resistant, so it handles both non-oil dusts and oil-containing mists. It is designed to sit on top of a 3M 6000-series gas or vapor cartridge, such as the 3M 6001 organic vapor cartridge, and it is held there by the 3M 501 filter retainer β€” one pad per cartridge. That layered setup does two jobs at once: it adds particulate protection to a chemical cartridge, and it shields the cartridge from dust and mist so the sorbent lasts longer before it clogs. For workers who go through cartridges quickly in dusty, vapor-present work, that service-life extension is the main draw.

Two limits define where it belongs. First, it is particulate only β€” it provides no gas or vapor protection by itself, so the cartridge underneath does the chemical work. Second, it is P95, not P100: for high-toxicity particulate such as lead, asbestos, or crystalline silica, you want a 99.97% P100 filter like the 3M 2091 rather than a P95 pre-filter. Our P100 filter comparison lays out when the higher rating is worth it.

Safety note: This is a particulate pre-filter β€” not a gas cartridge and not a supplied-air system. It does not filter gases or vapors and does not supply oxygen, so never rely on it in an oxygen-deficient or IDLH atmosphere, or against a gas or vapor hazard; those require the correct chemical cartridge or a supplied-air respirator or SCBA. The 5P71 only performs when held on a cartridge by the 3M 501 retainer, behind a fit-tested facepiece β€” and because it is P95, it is 95% efficient and oil-resistant, not a 99.97% P100 for high-toxicity dust.

How the Pieces Fit Together

A complete 5P71 setup is three parts: a 3M 6000-series cartridge, the 501 retainer, and the 5P71 pad, all on a 3M 6000/7000/FF-400 facepiece. The cartridge threads onto the facepiece bayonet, the 5P71 lays over the cartridge's inlet, and the 501 retainer caps it in place. If you only need particulate protection and no gas cartridge, a direct-attach P100 like the 2091 is simpler because it needs no retainer. If you already run a gas cartridge and want to add dust/mist protection and stretch cartridge life, the 5P71 plus 501 is the economical route. The related 3M 5N11 is the same idea in an N95 (non-oil) version.

Pros & Cons

Strengths

  • Adds P95 particulate protection to a gas/vapor cartridge

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the 5P71 attach directly to the facepiece like a 2091 filter, or does it need a retainer?

It needs a retainer. Unlike the 3M 2091 P100 filter, which snaps directly onto a 3M bayonet facepiece, the 5P71 is a thin pre-filter pad that has no bayonet of its own. It must be held onto a 3M 6000-series cartridge by the 3M 501 filter retainer β€” one pad per cartridge. Without the 501, there is no way to mount it correctly.

What does the "P" in P95 mean β€” can I use it around oil-based mists?

The "P" means oil-proof, so yes: the 5P71 is rated for particulate that contains oil, such as certain paint and lubricant mists, as well as non-oil dusts. That is the difference from an N-series filter like the 5N11, which is not for oil. The "95" means it captures at least 95% of airborne particulate.

Why would I add a 5P71 pre-filter over a gas or vapor cartridge?

Two reasons. First, it adds particulate protection to a chemical cartridge, so you are covered for dust or mist as well as vapor. Second β€” and often the main reason β€” it protects the cartridge itself: by catching particulate before it reaches the sorbent, the pre-filter keeps the cartridge from clogging and extends its usable service life, which saves money on cartridges.

Is the 5P71 enough protection for lead, asbestos, or silica dust?

For high-toxicity particulate like lead, asbestos, or crystalline silica, step up to a P100 filter rather than relying on the P95 5P71. P100 captures 99.97% versus P95's 95%, and it is the expected choice for those hazards. Use the 3M 2091 P100 or a P100 combination filter for high-toxicity dust; keep the 5P71 for general nuisance dust and mist.

Does the 5P71 provide any gas or vapor protection on its own?

No. The 5P71 is a particulate pre-filter only β€” it does not filter organic vapor, acid gas, or any other gas or vapor. It is meant to be layered on a gas/vapor cartridge such as the 3M 6001, which supplies the chemical protection while the 5P71 handles particulate. Alone, it does nothing for a gas hazard.

What is the difference between the 5P71 and a 2091 P100 filter?

The 5P71 is a P95 pre-filter pad that requires the 501 retainer and rides on a cartridge; the 2091 is a P100 filter with its own bayonet that snaps directly onto the facepiece. The 2091 is higher efficiency (99.97% vs 95%) and self-mounting, while the 5P71 is designed to pair with and protect a chemical cartridge. Choose by whether you need particulate-only (2091) or particulate plus cartridge life extension (5P71).

Which cartridges and facepieces does the 5P71 work with?

It works with 3M 6000-series bayonet gas and vapor cartridges, held by the 3M 501 retainer, on 3M 6000, 7000, and FF-400 series half and full facepieces. It is part of the 3M bayonet system and is not compatible with Honeywell, MSA, Moldex, or GVS respirators.

How is the 5P71 sold β€” how many are in a pack?

3M sells the 5P71 in several pack sizes, from pairs up to larger boxes and cases. Because pre-filters are consumables you replace often, buying a larger pack usually lowers the per-filter cost. Confirm the exact quantity on the listing before ordering, and remember you also need the 501 retainer if you do not already have one.

What are the signs it is time to replace the pre-filter?

Replace the 5P71 when breathing resistance noticeably increases, when it is visibly soiled or loaded with dust, or if it is torn or damaged β€” and always follow your written change schedule. A pre-filter's whole job is to load up so the cartridge does not, so expect to change it more often than the cartridge underneath it.

Can I wash or reuse a 5P71 pre-filter?

No. Filter media cannot be washed or cleaned β€” doing so damages the media and destroys the NIOSH rating. The 5P71 is disposable; replace it rather than trying to clean it. Never knock out, blow off, or rinse a respirator filter to extend its life.

Do I still need a fit test when I add a pre-filter?

Yes. Adding a pre-filter does not change the requirement that any tight-fitting respirator used at work be fit tested and seal-checked each time you don it. The filter only works behind a properly sealed facepiece, and facial hair on the sealing surface breaks that seal regardless of what filter you run.

Does adding a 5P71 make my respirator safe for a confined or low-oxygen space?

No. A pre-filter, cartridge, and facepiece together are still an air-purifying respirator β€” they clean existing breathable air but cannot add oxygen or protect in an unknown atmosphere. A confined space or a low-oxygen atmosphere requires a supplied-air respirator, never a filter cartridge combination.

Reviewed by Steven Eaton, WC Safety. Specifications reflect 3M's published listing for filter 5P71 (P95, oil-resistant). The 5P71 is a particulate pre-filter that requires the 3M 501 retainer to attach to a 3M 6000-series cartridge; it is not a direct-attach filter and provides no gas, vapor, or oxygen protection. For high-toxicity particulate such as lead or asbestos use a P100 filter, and confirm the pack quantity and current specification on the listing before purchase.

This is the real 3m filter
I think I read in another review that says these might be counterfeit or fake. The ones I bought were from Amazon and they appear to be just like the old ones that I used to buy. The only difference is the packaging graphics are different otherwise the product is the same. They fit my 6200 respirator just fine. Just a tip if you want to prolong these dust filters cut a piece of paper towel and put it over these and then put it back into the holder. Makes these last much longer

Exact fit over my air cartridges
These are a bit expensive but the dust they blocked from my air cartridges makes them invaluable. I needed these to work on sanding paint from a fibreglassed boat hull. The amount of fibreglass dust and paint they captured was easy to see in a single day's use. I would never consider using the cartridges alone after seeing how much dangerous fibreglass and paint dust these filters captured in a single day. They are worth every penny.

good price, good shipping, I'm pleased
not N95 but I find these great. I insert 1 under the cheap mask I can find. Waiting 6 weeks on a box of masks still, but these are superior to anything else I've found or been able to get. I would recommend these, and bought a second box. Shipped and arrived in a few days. For what I could find and get, these are tops.

Atop of the line filter that protects your lungs
I recieved my 3m filters and was surprised to find there was more than 2 pair in the box. There are more tha 4 pair. For the price compared to other store and what you receive in your order is well worth the price. It's good to know that these filters protect your lungs from spraying paint and oil based paints and they protect you from many other contaminants that are listed on the box. The spray paint and oil mist really surprised me when I read the information and 3m filters are OSHA approved.

Do not install backwards.
These filters were used in a dual cartridge respirator. I always keep a respirator on hand in case the one I'm using clogs badly. However due to the virus situation,I find that replacing the filters in my unit works fine. I use it when plowing fields and cutting grass.

P95 filters, mostly meant for oily particles
If you want more straight vapor and organic filters / non-oily particles, get the N95 filters. These are really great filters and a good addon for my organic filter cartridges. Work great with all our 3M half-masks that we use when painting, using chemicals, etc. Just what we needed.

Fit, money saving
These fit perfect for my respirator. Apparently during covid, lowes stopped carrying these filters as well as the masks themselves. I'm allergic to paint and have to have this when painting or I'll pass right out. Thankfully amazon carried them and in affordable bulk! This many filters will last me forever. Now I can paint without worrying.
