3m secure click half face reusable respirator hf-800sd β€” what the listing actually specifies

3M Secure Click HF-800SD Half Face Respirator β€” Speaking Diaphragm, Push-Button Seal Check, Silicone Facepiece

An air-purifying respirator filters air, it does not supply any. Under 29 CFR 1910.134 no air-purifying respirator may be worn in an atmosphere that is IDLH or oxygen-deficient (below 19.5% oxygen). Those conditions require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA, and no filter or cartridge rating changes that.

The 3M Secure Click HF-800SD is the right call if verbal communication is part of your safety program. It’s the only half face respirator in 3M’s current lineup that ships with a factory-integrated speaking diaphragm as standard β€” no add-on kit, no separate purchase. Pair that with a silicone facepiece (not the thermoplastic elastomer used on budget masks), a push-button negative pressure seal check, and the D-series Secure Click cartridge system, and you get a mask that communicates, seals, and changes cartridges faster than the 7502 or 6502QL it replaces. APF 10, available in HF-801SD (Small), HF-802SD (Medium), HF-803SD (Large). D-series cartridges sold separately.

Read the full 3M Secure Click Half Face Reusable Respirator HF-800SD Series review β†’

The 3M Secure Click HF-800SD is a NIOSH-approved half-face air-purifying respirator rated APF 10, built on the D-series Secure Click platform. Per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, it is appropriate for airborne concentrations up to 10 times the applicable permissible exposure limit when used with the correct approved D-series cartridge for the hazard present.

What Makes the HF-800SD Different

  • Factory-integrated speaking diaphragm β€” amplifies voice so workers can give instructions, respond to radio calls, and coordinate without breaking seal. No other standard 3M half face mask includes this at the current price point.
  • Push-button seal check β€” press the button, breathe in gently: if the mask collapses and holds, the seal is good. Faster and more consistent than palm-over-valve checks on older designs.
  • Silicone facepiece β€” more comfortable than thermoplastic elastomers over long shifts, and holds its shape longer. The HF-800SD and the 3M FF-800 are the only silicone-facepiece options in the Secure Click lineup.
  • Secure Click D-series system β€” cartridges click audibly into place; no guesswork under gloves. Same cartridge inventory as the FF-800 if your site runs both masks.
  • Quad-flow cartridge design β€” two dual-flow D-series cartridges create four airflow paths, reducing breathing resistance compared to standard two-path bayonet systems.
  • Half-face profile β€” lighter than a full-face respirator; fully compatible with safety glasses and prescription eyewear worn simultaneously. No lens inserts needed.
  • Three sizes β€” HF-801SD (Small), HF-802SD (Medium), HF-803SD (Large) β€” each independently fit-tested.

Which Size to Order: HF-801SD, HF-802SD, or HF-803SD?

If you’re unsure, order HF-802SD Medium β€” it fits the majority of adult faces. Measure face length (chin to nose bridge) and face width (cheekbone to cheekbone), match to 3M’s panel sizing chart, and confirm with an OSHA-required fit test before operational use. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 mandates fit testing for all tight-fitting respirators.

Use Cases β€” When the HF-800SD Is the Right Pick

Jobs where you need to talk

Supervisors giving instructions, workers coordinating tasks, anyone who responds to radio calls or safety check-ins on shift. The speaking diaphragm means you don’t have to choose between respiratory protection and being heard. Pair with the D80921 OV/P100 cartridge for the most common paint and solvent environments.

Workers wearing prescription eyewear or safety glasses

Because the HF-800SD covers only the nose and mouth, it works alongside any safety glasses or prescription eyewear. No special lens inserts, no adapter frames required. For a full eye + respiratory protection combination, pair with ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses.

Welding, grinding, and metal particulate work

Run the 3M D3091 P100 particulate filter for straight metal fume and grinding dust. For welding environments with flux fumes or coated electrode vapors, step up to the D80921 OV/P100 combination.

3M Secure Click HF-800SD Compatible Cartridges

The HF-800SD accepts only D-series Secure Click cartridges β€” the same lineup that fits the 3M FF-800 full face. If your site runs both masks, one cartridge inventory covers both. Not compatible with 3M 6000-series (6001, 60926) or 7000-series bayonet cartridges.

SKU Type Order If You’re Doing…
D3091 P100 Particulate Welding, grinding, metal fumes, lead dust
D3097 P100 + Nuisance OV Relief Dusty work with background solvent odor
D3078 P95 Particulate Oil-based aerosols, economy particulate option
D8001 Organic Vapor Solvent degreasing, adhesives β€” no particulate hazard
D8003 OV + Acid Gas Chlorine, HCl, acid gas + solvent
D8006 Multi-Gas & Vapor OV + acid gas + ammonia β€” no particulate component
D80921 OV + P100 Combo Spray painting, coatings, general industrial β€” most popular
D80923 OV/AG + P100 Combo Isocyanate coatings, acid-catalyzed systems
D80926 Multi-Gas + P100 Combo Broadest coverage β€” OV + acid gas + ammonia + P100

HF-800SD vs. Other 3M Half Face Options

HF-800SD vs. 3M 7502: The 7502 uses the standard bayonet cartridge mount (same 60926, 6001 cartridges as the 6800) and does not include a speaking diaphragm. Right choice if your facility already stocks bayonet cartridges and communication isn’t a priority. The HF-800SD is the choice when you need the diaphragm and silicone comfort, and you’re open to switching cartridge systems. See all 3M half face options β†’

HF-800SD vs. FF-800: APF 10 vs. APF 50. If your exposure concentration requires APF 50, you need the 3M FF-800 full face. If APF 10 is sufficient and you need to wear glasses or want a lighter mask, the HF-800SD is the right call. Both use the same D-series cartridges. Full comparison: HF-800SD review and FF-800 review. FAQ β€” Buying and Ordering the 3M HF-800SD

Which size should I order β€” HF-801SD, HF-802SD, or HF-803SD?

Order HF-802SD Medium if you’re unsure β€” it covers the majority of adult faces. Measure chin-to-nose-bridge (face length) and cheekbone-to-cheekbone (face width), match to 3M’s panel sizing chart, and confirm with an OSHA-required fit test. When in doubt between sizes, go up.

Do cartridges come with the HF-800SD?

No β€” add at least one pair of D-series cartridges before ordering. For general industrial or spray paint work, the D80921 OV/P100 is the most-ordered pairing. For dust-only environments, the D3091 P100 filter is the lower-cost option.

What cartridge should I order for spray painting?

The D80921 OV/P100 covers solvent vapor and paint particulate in one cartridge. For isocyanate-based or acid-catalyzed coatings, add acid gas coverage with the D80923 OV/AG/P100.

What cartridge should I order for welding fumes?

For metal fume only (grinding, MIG welding with mild steel), the D3091 P100 filter is sufficient and the most economical option. If the welding involves flux-coated electrodes or coated metals that generate organic vapors, step up to the D80921 OV/P100.

What cartridge gives the broadest multi-gas coverage?

The D80926 multi-gas/vapor P100: OV + acid gas + ammonia/methylamine + P100 particulate in a single D-series unit. Use it in multi-chemical environments where you want one cartridge type to cover a variable exposure profile across the shift.

Can I stack a gas cartridge and a particulate filter at the same time?

No β€” one D-series accessory per port. Order a combination cartridge like the D80921 or D80926 if you need both in one unit.

Will D-series cartridges fit my existing 3M 7502 or 6502QL?

No. D-series Secure Click cartridges fit only HF-800SD and FF-800 masks. The 7502 and 6502QL use the standard bayonet mount. The two systems are completely incompatible. A switch to the HF-800SD means replacing your cartridge inventory.

Does the HF-800SD work with safety glasses or prescription eyewear?

Yes β€” it’s a half-face mask that covers only the nose and mouth. Safety glasses, prescription frames, and goggles all work alongside it with no modification. This is the primary reason to choose the HF-800SD over the FF-800 when you need corrective lenses on the job.

Can I order multiple sizes for a crew?

Yes β€” add each size as a separate line item. Starting distribution before fit testing: roughly 10% Small / 70% Medium / 20% Large for most adult crews. Adjust after completing OSHA-required individual fit tests under 1910.134. For 10+ unit orders, contact WC Safety for quantity pricing.

Are D-series cartridges sold in pairs?

Yes β€” gas cartridges and combination cartridges (D80921, D80926, D8001, D8003, D8006, D80923) come in pairs. Particulate filters (D3091, D3078, D3097) also come in pairs. One pair = one full change-out on the HF-800SD. Calculate order quantity: workers Γ— expected change-outs per period per 3M’s service life guidance.

Is the speaking diaphragm replaceable?

Yes β€” 3M publishes a replacement part number for the HF-800SD speaking diaphragm assembly. Confirm the correct part number with your 3M distributor. Replace per 3M’s written instructions: an improperly installed diaphragm can compromise the face seal and drop the NIOSH-approved protection level.

What replacement parts can I order?

Available replacement parts: speaking diaphragm assembly, inhalation and exhalation valve assemblies, head harness, harness buckles. The silicone facepiece itself is not a field-serviceable part β€” if it’s damaged, replace the full mask. D-series cartridges are the only consumable in normal rotation.

OSHA 1910.134 Table 1 assigns an APF of 10 to every filtering facepiece respirator regardless of whether it is rated 95, 99 or 100, so the maximum use concentration is ten times the exposure limit. If you need better than that, the answer is a different class of respirator, not a better disposable."},{"q":"Does it protect against gases, vapours or solvents?","a":"No. A particulate filter does nothing about gases or vapours. Those need a chemical cartridge on a half-mask or full-face facepiece, and a nuisance-level organic-vapour layer on a disposable is a comfort feature, not a rated filter."},{"q":"What does an exhalation valve change, and what does it not?","a":"A valve lowers breathing resistance and heat on exhale, which matters over a full shift. It does NOT raise the protection the wearer receives, and it provides no source control - a valved respirator vents the wearer's unfiltered breath, so where the point is to protect other people or a sterile field the unvalved version is the correct choice. Whether a given model has one is on its own listing."},{"q":"Do I need a fit test before using it?","a":"For occupational use, yes. 29 CFR 1910.134(f) requires a fit test before first use and at least annually after that, on the specific make, model and size that will be worn - a different size is a different respirator as far as the seal is concerned. Separately, Appendix B-1 requires a user seal check on every donning."},{"q":"Does facial hair stop it working?","a":"Yes. Hair crossing the sealing surface prevents a seal, and 1910.134 requires the seal area to be clean-shaven on any tight-fitting respirator. No strap tension compensates for it."},{"q":"How long can one be worn before it is discarded?","a":"Discard it when breathing resistance has risen noticeably, when the facepiece is soiled, damaged or deformed, when the straps have lost tension, or when a seal check can no longer be passed. Straps and the nose foam usually fail before the filter loads up."},{"q":"Can it be washed or reused between shifts?","a":"No. Washing destroys the filter media and the seal. A disposable filtering facepiece is discarded, not cleaned."},{"q":"What is the difference between a respirator, a surgical N95 and a surgical mask?","a":"A NIOSH-approved respirator is tested for filtration and fit and carries an assigned protection factor. A SURGICAL N95 is both NIOSH-approved and FDA-cleared for fluid resistance, so it does both jobs. A plain surgical or cloth mask is neither - no protection factor, no NIOSH approval. The approval is printed on the device; read it there rather than inferring it from the shape."},{"q":"Can it be used in a confined space or an unknown atmosphere?","a":"No. No air-purifying respirator may be used in an IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmosphere under 1910.134. Those conditions require supplied air or an SCBA, and no filter rating changes that."},{"q":"How should it be stored between uses?","a":"Clean, dry and uncrushed, away from contaminated air. Worth the money. Better than 3M's Quick Latch model.
I purchased this model and also the 3M Quick Latch model that uses the bayomet style filters. This one is absolutely worth the extra money. I wish I would have just bought this one first and recommended it to my coworkers instead of Quick Latch. It IS worth it. To begin with, It fits much better and is more comfortable. The silicone seal has a bit of a "suspension" designed into it, so the entire mask is alot more forgiving to slight moment and bumping while maintaining a good fit and seal. I'm just using the hard cased P100 filters with my masks and it is noticeably easier to breath in, compared to the 3M Quick Latch - while exerting yourself performing tasks that make you breath heavy. I have to climb up/down ladders, duck under things to get into tight areas, lift heavy items, pull/push ECT.. There's a lot of movement and contourting to perform work in tight or awkward areas and the Secure Click is a big step up IMO. The push button seal check alone is worth difference in price. You immediately know if you have confidence in the seal or need to adjust something - which is a valuable thing to have if you're really concerned about whats in the air you're breathing. The speaking diaphragm is also a game changer for me. I can actually communicate with other people in a noisy environment and talk to someone over a 2 way radio without stepping away to pull a mask off so I can be heard and understood - which can cause a delay and frustration. And about that - pulling the mask off is why I initially went with the Quick Latch / bayonet filter model first, thinking that would be the better choice. It is VERY convenient and those are nice masks that work well, but when working in a very dirty place with mud, or whatever else - people wind up getting that all over the face piece of the mask - trying to access and use the latch. After using them both - in a filthy environment - I think it's better to go without the Quick Latch system and pick the Secure Click model over it - and I'll explain quickly why I think that. First - if you wanna pull the Secure Click Mask off, you must pull the headband off to let the mask hang around your neck (like any other cheaper model). So any mud/dirt/whatever winds up on the headband instead of on the front of someone's mask, right in front of their face. It's much easier to clean later, and you dirty up a "better" area to have dirty. Secondly - having a speaking diaphragm on the Secure Click - you're not pulling the mask away in frustration trying to talk to someone or stuck using hand signals if you work with other people. It's not like regular talking, but it IS talking and communication is key when working as a team. Lastly - it's NOTICABLY easier to breath heavy in the Secure Click model. Normal breathing - between the two models - doesnt make much of a difference. It's when you're exerting yourself I find a noticeable difference IMO. I don't feel like I'm gasping for air in the Secure Click. Having to exert force to do work, and then to have restricted breathing on top of that - is not a good combo. Each makes the other worse and compounds the problem. It's easy to get nervous - especially if you're wearing safety glasses or goggles and they begin to fog up - making you think the "safety mask" you have on is just leaking all over the place as you're struggling with something and trying NOT to breathe heavy so the masks won't leak. It's easier to breathe heavy in the Secure Click - AND the seal is more forgiving with keeping a seal. I don't find myself "dying to pull it off" when I'm done needing it. I'm not in a rush to remove it and it's not a problem to just leave it on if I might need it again. It makes doing the work easier and I have more confidence in this over the Quick Latch option.I don't have any experience using any of the gas cartridges but I suspect it would be the same across the board regardless of whatever filter/cartridges are used. Lastly - this is a minor thing but relevant - it's easier to wipe down the Secure Click model mask to keep it clean or decontaminate it.

Fitment/seal testing function is invaluable.
Great 3M product that I can trust. I really appreciate the fitment testing feature. It may seem gimmicky at first, but after trying it, I realize it’s invaluable. With the fitment testing feature, I can verify the integrity of the seal then and there. It’s invaluable for peace of mind and limiting exposure when you’re deep in a job. It’s worth the extra.Just earlier this year, I was grinding concrete indoors with the more basic 3M respirator. I’d sometimes catch a small whiff of the dust (likely due to knocking it) or having some on my face from prior. This led to paranoia, that there was a leak, since the particles inside won’t leave and the smells can linger.

Pain Free & Easy to Breathe Through!
I LOVE this mask! I have severe chronic nerve pain originating in my cervical spine (neck), so wearing a respirator in my woodshop (a necessity) is painful for me. Most respirators rely on a tight neck strap to ensure a good fit. Unfortunately, makes it difficult for those who have neck injuries to follow safety guidelines. However, this mask relies more on the strap going to the top of your head to ensure a good fit, meaning I can have the neck strap adjusted to be comfortable WITHOUT sacrificing my safety/the fit of this respirator (the seal test button is great for putting this to the test)!About that button: I'm so glad they included the seal test button because the filters for this mask have such high airflow that without the seal test button I would think that I hadn't actually inserted any filter cartridges! It barely even feels like I'm wearing a respirator, which is amazing! Plus it's sleek design keeps my field of view clear and makes wearing this respirator with a shield in visor way more manageable than other models. It is a bit pricy and I can see that the new filter connection type is a basically just an excuse to require people to buy all new types of arbitrarily higher priced filters.Still, I think it's amazing![To anyone else reading this: please make sure you have a proper fit and that all safety instructions are being followed, please do not take my experience as fact without testing it for yourself and your usage case.]

Great for my allergies.
I bought this mask because I was tired of mowing my lawn and having my allergies acting up days after. It's comfortable to wear and the fit is great thanks to its adjustability. It's quite easy to use and does a great job keeping the dust and such out of my nose when I'm mowing or doing a little housework like cutting wood and some painting.

For welding stainless
As I don't want to get cancer from welding stainless steel, a respirator is a must. This one fits reasonably well under the welding mask.I would subtract half a star for the straps being not comfortable.

the gasket will rip your nose up
3m respirators are never tested on people with big noses. The original 3m respirator is so short snouted that it blisters the tip of the nose. This version has resolved that issue but the stupid unnecessary gasket slices through the bridge of the nose and rubs it raw. The pleats of the gasket litterally pinch and grip the skin on bridge of your nose until all the skin is rubbed away and you're left with a blood blister. Pure torture.
