klein tools 60552 reusable p100 half-mask respirator β€” what the listing actually specifies

Klein Tools 60552 / 60553 Reusable P100 Half-Mask Respirator

An air-purifying respirator filters air, it does not supply any. Under 29 CFR 1910.134 no air-purifying respirator may be worn in an atmosphere that is IDLH or oxygen-deficient (below 19.5% oxygen). Those conditions require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA, and no filter or cartridge rating changes that.

The Klein Tools 60552 (M/L) and 60553 (S/M) are reusable half-mask respirators rated NIOSH P100 β€” the highest level of particulate filtration, blocking at least 99.97% of airborne particles including dust, metal fumes, and oil mist. Designed with the working tradesperson in mind, the 60552 series combines a lightweight, low-profile shell that minimizes interference with safety glasses and face shields, a downward-facing exhalation valve that prevents lens fogging, and a simple push-in fit check that lets you confirm face seal in seconds without removing the respirator. The built-in sample port enables non-destructive quantitative fit testing, making it suitable for formal fit test programs under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. Replacement P100 filters (Klein Tools Cat. No. 60554, sold separately) drop in without tools, keeping downtime minimal. Available in two sizes to fit most faces: S/M and M/L, both at the same price point. Browse all half-mask respirators or the full respiratory protection catalog at WC Safety.

Certifications & Standards

NIOSH P100 National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health approval for particulate filtration. P100 filters block at least 99.97% of airborne particles and are oil-proof, making them suitable for environments with oil mist. P-series filters are the most protective particulate rating; the "100" designation matches the filter efficiency standard used in Europe (P3). Approved under 42 CFR Part 84.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 OSHA's Respiratory Protection Standard requires employers to establish a written respiratory protection program when respirators are necessary. This includes medical evaluations, fit testing, training, and maintenance procedures. The Klein Tools 60552 is compatible with both qualitative and quantitative fit test protocols; its sample port enables PortaCount-style QNFT without modifying the facepiece. General industry standard; 29 CFR 1926.103 covers construction.
NIOSH TC-84A NIOSH approval number prefix for half-mask air-purifying respirators with particulate filters under 42 CFR Part 84. Confirmation of approval number and approval certificate is available through the NIOSH Certified Equipment List (CEL) at cdc.gov/niosh/npptl. Always verify the full approval number printed on the filter cartridge matches the CEL entry.

Key Features

Downward-Facing Exhalation Valve Directs exhaled air downward, away from the lenses of safety glasses and face shields. Prevents warm breath from fogging eyewear during extended wear in cold or low-ventilation environments. Critical for workers who wear safety glasses simultaneously β€” the exhalation path does not travel upward across the lens. The valve also reduces heat and humidity buildup inside the facepiece.
Push-In Fit Check Simple positive/negative pressure fit check built into the facepiece. Push the exhalation valve cover to perform a positive pressure check; cover the filter inlets for a negative pressure check. Does not require any tool or additional accessory. Both check methods are described in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, Appendix B-1 as accepted user seal check procedures.
Built-In Sample Port Dedicated port for connecting a PortaCount or similar particle concentration meter during quantitative fit testing. Non-destructive β€” no modification to the facepiece is needed. Allows the 60552 to be used in formal OSHA fit test programs requiring annual quantitative testing. Many industrial hygienists prefer half-masks with a factory sample port over field-modified units.
Replaceable P100 Filters (60554) Filters snap in and out without tools. Klein Tools Cat. No. 60554 P100 replacement filters are sold separately and available on Amazon. Replace filters when breathing resistance increases noticeably or filters become damaged. P100 filters do not have a set service life for particulates (they load over time), but inspect the filter housing and gasket at each donning. See respirator filters and cartridges for filter options across all brands.
Low-Profile Shell Compact facepiece shell reduces interference with safety glasses, goggles, and hard-hat brims. Particularly relevant for electricians and utility workers who wear multiple pieces of PPE simultaneously. Compatible with standard safety glasses temples; check fit with your specific eyewear combination before deploying at the jobsite.
Adjustable Strap System Dual head straps with slider buckle adjustment allow quick donning and removal without re-threading. Straps can be adjusted to fit a range of head sizes within the S/M or M/L size range. Even with proper strap adjustment, fit test is still required under OSHA 1910.134 β€” adjustable straps do not substitute for formal fit testing.

Size Guide

60553 B0CQ3ZHR7L β†— S/M 092644605536

Note: Even within the same size range, facial geometry varies. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 requires fit testing for all employees required to wear a respirator. If you fail fit testing in one size, try the other before selecting a different model.

When to Use a P100 Half-Mask vs. Other Respirator Types

Hazard Recommended Respirator
Nuisance dust (non-toxic, low concentration) Disposable N95 or N99
Toxic dust, metal fumes, oil mist (moderate concentration) Klein Tools 60552 P100 Half-Mask (this product)
Gas and vapor hazards (solvents, paints, organic vapors) Half-mask with OV or combination cartridge β€” see half-mask respirators
IDLH (immediately dangerous to life or health) atmospheres SCBA or full-face supplied air β€” half-masks never permitted in IDLH
Low oxygen environments (<19.5% O2) Supplied-air respirator required β€” APF respirators provide no oxygen enrichment

Assigned Protection Factor (APF)

OSHA assigns half-mask APR respirators an APF of 10, meaning they reduce the wearer's exposure to 1/10 of the ambient concentration when worn correctly and fit-tested. This is suitable for environments with contaminant concentrations up to 10x the permissible exposure limit (PEL) for that substance. Full-face respirators carry an APF of 50 and are required when concentrations exceed the half-mask APF range or when eye protection against the contaminant is also needed.

Maintenance and Storage

  • Clean the facepiece with mild soap and water or a manufacturer-approved wipe after each use. Do not use bleach or solvent-based cleaners.
  • Inspect the exhalation valve and gasket at each donning. A compromised exhalation valve can allow contaminated air to bypass the filter on inhalation.
  • Store in a clean, dry location away from UV light, extreme temperatures, and chemical vapors. Do not store in a vehicle glove box or direct sunlight β€” silicone facepieces degrade faster under UV.
  • Replace the facepiece if it shows visible damage (tears, deformation, broken strap attachment points) or fails a user seal check. The facepiece itself does not have a fixed service life under normal use, but inspect it at minimum monthly.
  • Replace filters (60554) when breathing resistance increases. P100 filters do not "expire" based on time, but replace if wet, crushed, or contaminated with liquid splashes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Klein Tools 60552 protect against gases and vapors?
No. The 60552 uses P100 particulate filters only. It does not protect against organic vapors, acid gases, or other chemical vapors. For gas/vapor protection, you need a respirator with combination OV/P100 cartridges. See half-mask respirators for models with gas/vapor capability.
Do I need to be fit-tested to use the Klein Tools 60552?
Yes, if your employer requires you to wear a respirator to comply with an OSHA standard or the employer's own requirement, you must be fit-tested annually under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. Fit testing is not required for voluntary use (when the employer permits use but does not require it), but OSHA still recommends it. The 60552's sample port supports PortaCount-style QNFT.
Can I wear the 60552 with safety glasses?
Yes. Klein Tools designed the 60552 to minimize interference with safety glasses. The low-profile shell and downward exhalation valve reduce fogging. However, some safety glasses temple styles (thick or wrap-around) can break the face seal at the cheek. Always perform a user seal check after putting on both the respirator and your eyewear.
How often do I replace the P100 filters?
Replace Klein Tools 60554 filters when breathing resistance becomes noticeably higher, if the filter is damaged or wet, or if it has been exposed to liquid splashes. P100 filters have no time-based service life for particulates. Replace both filters simultaneously. The Klein Tools 60554 is the compatible replacement filter. See respirator filters and cartridges for all filter options.
What does NIOSH P100 mean?
NIOSH P100 indicates the filter is approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and blocks at least 99.97% of tested particles. The "P" (oil-proof) designation means it maintains filtration efficiency even in oil mist environments, unlike N-series (not oil-resistant) or R-series (oil-resistant, 8-hour limit). NIOSH certifies filters under 42 CFR Part 84.
Is the 60552 approved for lead dust?
OSHA's Lead Standard (29 CFR 1910.1025) allows a P100 half-mask where concentrations are at or below 10x the PEL (500 ug/m3 for general industry). Higher concentrations require a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) or full-face respirator. Always conduct air monitoring to determine actual lead concentrations before selecting a respirator. Consult your industrial hygienist or safety officer.
What size should I order β€” S/M (60553) or M/L (60552)?
Size alone does not guarantee a seal. Select the size based on general face dimensions, then confirm fit with the built-in user seal check. For employees required to wear a respirator, formal fit testing under OSHA 1910.134 is required. If you fail in M/L, try S/M before switching to a different model. Some facial structures fit better in the smaller size regardless of overall head size.
Can the 60552 be worn with a beard?
No. Any facial hair between the facepiece sealing surface and the skin compromises the face seal and voids the APF of 10. OSHA 1910.134 expressly prohibits wearing tight-fitting respirators when facial hair passes between the face and the sealing surface, or when facial hair interferes with valve function. For workers with beards, a loose-fitting hood or powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) is required.
How is the 60552 different from a disposable N95?
P100 filtration (99.97%) is more effective than N95 (95%). The 60552 is reusable with replaceable filters, making it more economical for frequent use. It also includes features like the exhalation valve, sample port, and push-in fit check not found on most disposable respirators. Disposable N95s are typically used for shorter-duration tasks or environments where decontamination is impractical.
Is a medical evaluation required before using the 60552?
Yes, for mandatory use. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134(e) requires employers to provide a medical evaluation before an employee is required to use a respirator. The evaluation is typically an OSHA medical questionnaire reviewed by a physician or licensed health care professional (PLHCP). For voluntary use in non-hazardous environments, the evaluation requirement may be limited to providing OSHA Appendix D to the employee.

[{"q":"What does the P100 rating mean?","a":"Under 42 CFR 84 the letter and the number answer different questions. The letter is oil resistance - this one is oil proof. The number is filter efficiency against the most-penetrating 0.3 micron particle size, so 100 means 99.97% efficiency."},{"q":"Is a P100 better than an N95 for my job?","a":"It filters more efficiently, but under OSHA 1910.134 Table 1 every filtering facepiece carries the same assigned protection factor of 10. Moving up the filter scale changes what passes THROUGH the filter, not what leaks around the face seal - and the seal is the limit."},{"q":"What protection factor can I plan on?","a":"Ten. OSHA 1910.134 Table 1 assigns an APF of 10 to every filtering facepiece respirator regardless of whether it is rated 95, 99 or 100, so the maximum use concentration is ten times the exposure limit. If you need better than that, the answer is a different class of respirator, not a better disposable."},{"q":"Does it protect against gases, vapours or solvents?","a":"No. A particulate filter does nothing about gases or vapours. Those need a chemical cartridge on a half-mask or full-face facepiece, and a nuisance-level organic-vapour layer on a disposable is a comfort feature, not a rated filter."},{"q":"What does an exhalation valve change, and what does it not?","a":"A valve lowers breathing resistance and heat on exhale, which matters over a full shift. It does NOT raise the protection the wearer receives, and it provides no source control - a valved respirator vents the wearer's unfiltered breath, so where the point is to protect other people or a sterile field the unvalved version is the correct choice. Whether a given model has one is on its own listing."},{"q":"Do I need a fit test before using it?","a":"For occupational use, yes. 29 CFR 1910.134(f) requires a fit test before first use and at least annually after that, on the specific make, model and size that will be worn - a different size is a different respirator as far as the seal is concerned. Separately, Appendix B-1 requires a user seal check on every donning."},{"q":"Does facial hair stop it working?","a":"Yes. Hair crossing the sealing surface prevents a seal, and 1910.134 requires the seal area to be clean-shaven on any tight-fitting respirator. No strap tension compensates for it."},{"q":"How long can one be worn before it is discarded?","a":"Discard it when breathing resistance has risen noticeably, when the facepiece is soiled, damaged or deformed, when the straps have lost tension, or when a seal check can no longer be passed. Straps and the nose foam usually fail before the filter loads up."},{"q":"Can it be washed or reused between shifts?","a":"No. Washing destroys the filter media and the seal. A disposable filtering facepiece is discarded, not cleaned."},{"q":"What is the difference between a respirator, a surgical N95 and a surgical mask?","a":"A NIOSH-approved respirator is tested for filtration and fit and carries an assigned protection factor. A SURGICAL N95 is both NIOSH-approved and FDA-cleared for fluid resistance, so it does both jobs. A plain surgical or cloth mask is neither - no protection factor, no NIOSH approval. The approval is printed on the device; read it there rather than inferring it from the shape."},{"q":"Can it be used in a confined space or an unknown atmosphere?","a":"No. No air-purifying respirator may be used in an IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmosphere under 1910.134. Those conditions require supplied air or an SCBA, and no filter rating changes that."},{"q":"How should it be stored between uses?","a":"Clean, dry and uncrushed, away from contaminated air. A respirator stored loose in a toolbox or a pocket deforms, and a deformed facepiece will not pass a seal check even if the filter is untouched."}]

Great mask, - BUT goofy strap
Decent mask, but the adjustable strap is goofy and something you would expect on a mask manufactured back in the 90s. A cheap no name mask that I purchased at Home Depot has a much better strap and is quite comfortable. So I just wish they could adapt and grow on the knowledge and step into the new millennium
