honeywell north 550030 series half mask respirator 550030s — what the listing actually specifies

Honeywell North 550030M Half Mask Respirator — North 5500 Series, NIOSH TC-23C, APF 10, Medium Size, North Bayonet Cartridge System

An air-purifying respirator filters air, it does not supply any. Under 29 CFR 1910.134 no air-purifying respirator may be worn in an atmosphere that is IDLH or oxygen-deficient (below 19.5% oxygen). Those conditions require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA, and no filter or cartridge rating changes that.

Short answer: The North 550030M is a NIOSH TC-23C approved half-face respirator carrying APF 10 under OSHA 1910.134 Appendix A. It uses the North bayonet cartridge system — compatible with the full North cartridge library including OV, AG, P100, combination, and mercury vapor cartridges. The 5500 delivers the same NIOSH compliance and North bayonet cartridge access as the premium 7700 series at a lower price point — the right choice when the 7700's low-profile welding-helmet feature is not required. Select medium after OSHA-required fit testing confirms it as the correct size — medium is the recommended starting size for most workers.

Reviewed by the WC Safety Editorial — PPE specialists with hands-on experience across industrial, construction, chemical, and healthcare environments. Last updated: May 2026.

The Honeywell North 550030M is the medium-size half-mask respirator in the North North 5500 Series. It carries NIOSH 42 CFR 84 TC-23C approval and delivers an Assigned Protection Factor of 10 per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 Appendix A when properly fit-tested. The 550030M uses the North bayonet cartridge connection, providing access to the complete North cartridge library — particulate P100, organic vapor, acid gas, combination cartridges, and specialty mercury vapor protection. The 5500 series provides the same North bayonet cartridge compatibility and NIOSH compliance as the premium 7700 series in a more economical package — appropriate for programs where the 7700's low-profile welding-helmet feature is not required. OSHA 1910.134(f)(2) requires fit testing before operational deployment regardless of size selected.

Key Features — Honeywell North 550030M

Applications — When to Use the North 550030M

  • General industrial and manufacturing: The 5500 is appropriate for general manufacturing environments where airborne concentration does not exceed 10× OEL and the low-profile welding-helmet feature of the 7700 is not required. Select cartridges based on the specific hazard identified in your site hazard assessment
  • Construction and trades: Silica-generating work (concrete cutting, grinding), lead paint abatement, and asbestos in pre-1980 buildings all require P100 filtration. The 7580P100 P100 on the 5500 provides NIOSH-compliant APF 10 particulate protection for these operations
  • Chemical handling and maintenance: The 5500 with appropriate North cartridge (OV, AG, OV/AG) provides gas and vapor protection for maintenance, chemical handling, and cleaning operations — same cartridge coverage as the 7700 at lower facepiece cost
  • Spray painting and coating operations: OV/P100 or OV/AG/P100 protection from 7581P100L or 7583P100L on the 5500 covers solvent vapors and paint overspray particulate in lower-intensity painting environments
  • Cost-sensitive multi-worker programs: For operations requiring many respirators across a workforce, the 5500 reduces per-unit cost while maintaining identical NIOSH compliance and North bayonet cartridge compatibility — a practical choice for safety managers balancing budget and compliance requirements

Compatible Cartridges — North Bayonet System

3M 6500QL Series 10 Rugged thermoplastic 3M platform — quick-latch lever for frequent removal between tasks

Cartridge platforms are brand-specific — North, 3M, MSA, and Moldex bayonet systems are not interchangeable. All half-masks listed carry APF 10 when properly fit-tested per OSHA 1910.134 Appendix A.

OSHA Compliance & Fit Testing

All Honeywell North half-mask respirators carry NIOSH 42 CFR 84 TC-23C approval — the NIOSH classification for tight-fitting half-face air-purifying respirators. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 Appendix A, a properly fit-tested half-mask carries an Assigned Protection Factor of 10.

  • Written respiratory protection program: Required under OSHA 1910.134(c) before any worker uses a respirator operationally — must include hazard assessment, written program, medical evaluation, fit testing, and cartridge change-out procedures
  • Medical evaluation first: OSHA 1910.134(e) requires a completed medical questionnaire evaluated by a PLHCP before fit testing or operational use — no exceptions
  • Annual fit testing: OSHA 1910.134(f)(2) mandates annual qualitative (QLFT) or quantitative (QNFT) fit testing — required whenever the facepiece model or size changes as well
  • User seal check every use: Positive and negative pressure seal checks per OSHA Appendix B-1 must be performed each time the respirator is donned before entering the work area
  • Cartridge change-out schedule: OSHA 1910.134(d)(3)(iii) requires a written schedule based on objective data — never rely on odor breakthrough as the change indicator
  • APF 10 ceiling: Half-masks are appropriate only when airborne concentrations do not exceed 10× the OEL. If your hazard assessment documents concentrations above 10× OEL, a full-face respirator (APF 50) or SCBA is required

Who Needs the Medium Size?

The medium is the recommended starting size for most adult workers in North 7700 and 5500 programs. If OSHA-required fit testing confirms an inadequate seal in medium, move to small (550030S). The medium covers the majority of adult facial profiles — if unsure, always begin here.

Important: Do not select size based on general body size. Facial geometry determines respirator fit. The 550030S, 550030M, and 550030L are identical in every respect — NIOSH approval, APF, cartridge compatibility — except facepiece geometry. OSHA 1910.134(f)(2) requires annual fit testing regardless of size chosen.

Clean Air, Healthy Respiration
Somewhat small for me, but nonetheless fitting snugly on my face, having a P100 filter, and being approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), this Honeywell respirator, though unable to remove poisonous gases, has been otherwise perfectly effective in preventing wood smoke, cigarette smoke, automotive exhaust, foul odors, and other offensive, distracting, hazardous, and unpleasant causes of olfactory sensations from reaching my nose and mouth. I found it especially helpful during the Mullen fire and Colorado fires, which produced smoke that shrouded my home almost continuously for five weeks: having fit the mask snugly, I inhaled no smoke and could not smell it at all,--nor could I smell my neighbors' coffee, bacon, food garbage, tobacco smoke, or automotive exhaust. And I continue to enjoy and value the same benefits of this respirator, even during sleep. The quiet clicking of the exhalation valve is no more noticeable than the ticking of an old clock, or than the rhythm of my normal breathing. The head straps are very unlikely to break as long as you don't lift the respirator by them: it's advisable to grasp the respirator itself before you pick it up. This Honeywell respirator is much more effective than my EROCK Half Facepiece Respirator 6200 by 3M Company, and being made of softer plastic, feels more comfortable on my face. To stay safe, I sanitize the respirator with isopropyl alcohol at least three times a day.

Better than disposable N95
Works very well, doesn’t fit as well as the 7700 series but is a great substitute for use in a medical setting. Disposable N95s are hot and difficult to wear for an hour straight and wasteful. I prefer this by far for comfort and security. Needs to be adjusted frequently for fit, cleaned of sweat and is hard to talk in but worth it for the ease of breathing.

Comfortable, modestly priced half face respiratior!
Although slightly less nice than the more expensive soft black honeywell masks, it is still very comfortable. Have worn for close to 8 straight hours during our summer work days with the exception of pulling it off for water. Of course, comfort over duration also has a lot to do with having clean filters so don't forget to replace those team!!

As stated, does not come with cartidges
Despite lack of cartridges, however, I had no difficulty trying this thing ON, and it fits wonderfully. I got it primarily for costume purposes, but I don't like a costume to be worthless for anything else; what's the point in that? The vents work properly and I appreciate the simplicity of the design. It fits snug, but comfortably. The straps are slightly difficult to adjust on the face, but I managed and now I look...strange.If I need a mask for anything, I think this is what I'll use; it doesn't fog up my glasses and I can WEAR my glasses. Also, my copious amounts of facial hair do not seem to be impeding the seal whatsoever. All-around, this thing is wonderful.

Honeywell North 550030 Series Half Mask Respirator 550030S 550030M 550030L

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the North 5500 compare to the North 7700?
Both the North 5500 and 7700 carry NIOSH TC-23C approval, APF 10, and use the same North bayonet cartridge system — compliance and cartridge access are identical. The 7700 is the premium version: soft non-allergenic silicone, low-profile design for under-welding-helmet use, and higher comfort for full-shift wear. The 5500 provides the same compliance at a lower price point and is the right choice when the 7700's low-profile welding feature is not required. See: North 770030M (7700 Series Medium) .
Can I use 3M cartridges on the North 5500?
No. The North 5500 uses the North bayonet twist-lock connection — a different geometry than 3M's bayonet. These systems are not interchangeable. All cartridges used on the 5500 must be North-branded bayonet cartridges. See: North Cartridges & Filters at WC Safety → .
What NIOSH approval does the North 5500 carry?
The North 5500 is NIOSH approved under 42 CFR Part 84 as a TC-23C half-face tight-fitting air-purifying respirator. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 Appendix A, a properly fit-tested 5500 carries an Assigned Protection Factor (APF) of 10 — appropriate for environments where airborne concentrations do not exceed 10× the OEL.
What size North 5500 do I need?
Facial dimensions — not body size or height — determine the correct size. Always start with the Medium ( 550030M ) if you have not been fit tested — it fits the majority of adult workers. If medium fails OSHA fit testing, try Small ( 550030S ) or Large ( 550030L ) accordingly. OSHA 1910.134(f)(2) requires annual fit testing before operational deployment.
What cartridges work with the North 5500?
The 5500 accepts all North bayonet cartridges: 7580P100 (P100), 7581P100L (OV/P100), 7582P100L (AG/P100), 7583P100L (OV/AG/P100), 75852P100L (mercury vapor + P100), and gas-only cartridges N75001L (OV), N75002L (OV/AG), and N75004L (NH₃). See: North Cartridge Guide 2026 →
How do I clean and store the North 5500?
Remove cartridges before cleaning. Wash with mild soap and warm water; rinse thoroughly. For disinfection, use an approved disinfectant and allow to air dry. Inspect the face seal, valve, and head straps before each use — replace the facepiece if the silicone is cracked, permanently deformed, or if the straps have lost elasticity. Store in a clean, sealed bag away from direct sunlight, ozone sources, and chemical vapors when not in use.
Can the North 5500 be used for welding under a helmet?
Unlike the North 7700, the 5500 does not have the low-profile design specifically optimized for under-helmet use. Workers who need a half-mask that fits reliably under an auto-darkening welding helmet or grinding face shield should use the North 770030M (7700 Series) — it was specifically designed for that application. The 5500 is appropriate for general industrial use where over-mask headgear is not required.
How often do cartridges need to be changed on the North 5500?
OSHA 1910.134(d)(3)(iii) requires a written cartridge change schedule established before use — not based on odor detection. For P100 filters (7580P100), replace when breathing resistance increases or upon physical damage. For vapor and combination cartridges, use Honeywell's service life estimation tools based on chemical, concentration, humidity, and shift data. Never rely on smell as a change indicator. See: North Cartridge Guide 2026 →
What protection factor can I plan on?
Ten. OSHA 1910.134 Table 1 assigns an APF of 10 to every filtering facepiece respirator regardless of whether it is rated 95, 99 or 100, so the maximum use concentration is ten times the exposure limit. If you need better than that, the answer is a different class of respirator, not a better disposable.
Does it protect against gases, vapours or solvents?
No. A particulate filter does nothing about gases or vapours. Those need a chemical cartridge on a half-mask or full-face facepiece, and a nuisance-level organic-vapour layer on a disposable is a comfort feature, not a rated filter.
What does an exhalation valve change, and what does it not?
A valve lowers breathing resistance and heat on exhale, which matters over a full shift. It does NOT raise the protection the wearer receives, and it provides no source control - a valved respirator vents the wearer's unfiltered breath, so where the point is to protect other people or a sterile field the unvalved version is the correct choice. Whether a given model has one is on its own listing.
Do I need a fit test before using it?
For occupational use, yes. 29 CFR 1910.134(f) requires a fit test before first use and at least annually after that, on the specific make, model and size that will be worn - a different size is a different respirator as far as the seal is concerned. Separately, Appendix B-1 requires a user seal check on every donning.
