Frequently asked questions

Does the B0CL5MMTDB require hardwiring or does it run on batteries?

Battery power and wiring requirements vary by model β€” check the Specifications table above for this unit's power source. Battery-operated models require no wiring and can be mounted on any ceiling or wall surface.

How do I test the alarm to confirm it's working?

Press the test button on the unit's face. A loud alarm tone confirms the horn, battery, and detection circuit are all functioning. Ring recommends testing monthly.

What triggers a false alarm, and how do I silence it?

Steam from showers or cooking vapors can trigger photoelectric alarms. Press the hush/silence button to temporarily quiet the alarm. Improve ventilation near the installation point if false alarms recur.

How often should smoke detectors be replaced?

Industry guidance recommends replacing smoke detectors every 10 years. Check the manufacture date printed on the back of the unit and schedule replacement accordingly.

Can this unit be interconnected with other alarms?

Interconnect capability depends on the specific model. Hardwired units with an interconnect wire allow multiple alarms to trigger simultaneously when one detects smoke. Battery-only units generally do not support interconnection.

Don’t work and likes to call fire department!
I bought 3 of these updated Ring smoke/CO listeners in March 2026. Amazon said they would be released in 1 month. No problem. They arrived but would not set-up properly. Ring customer service said the Ring app has not been updated to work with them, and it would be another month. Amazon sent me a email early June saying it was now updated, and last night (14Jun) I was able to set my 3 listeners up via the Ring app. However, it will only recognize the CO portion of my USI smoke/CO alarms. So it cannot detect the smoke alarms. I spent an hour talking to the Indian customer support team, who transferred to their more fluent English speaking Tier 2 team, but none were able to fix the problem. During installation you must push the test button of your smoke detector, and the listener learns the tone. However, while doing this my listener in another room heard my other smoke detector and started alerting. I got a notification in my phone and hit Dismiss. About a minute later my wife got a call from Ring saying the fire department was on their way. She said NO but a ring said they have to send them. Completely ridiculous. I declined via the notification in about 5 seconds, and my wife also declined in the phone. The fire department indeed came over. If I get a bill I’m sending it to Ring. This is asinine. So be careful if installing more than 1 of these. I recommend installing 0. Trying to see about a return even though I bought these months ago.

Great for Connecting a House full of wired smoke detectors to wireless notifications
Why I need this: I have a golden retriever that is part of the family, and she gets left home alone occasionally. Having this device allows me to quickly get a response from the fire department, and I hope to save her if we are not at home. I already have Ring Pro monitoring, which is not required, but something I wanted. This product is not a smoke detector. If you need a smoke detector, you can buy a Ring-compatible one. I bought some Ring-compatible Kidde smoke detectors for two of the buildings on my property that did not have smoke detectors. For the house, I had wired smoke detectors throughout, and they are all connected, so if one sounds off, they all do. This little device allows me to make those devices ring compatible. It was much smaller than I was expecting; it runs on two AA batteries that come with it. Like all Ring products, it is installed via the Ring App, so limited printed instructions are needed. The App walks you through the process from opening the device to updating and installing on the wall or ceiling. It has sticky tape on the back, which you could use to install it, but I just used the two supplied screws. There is a QR code on the instructions and also in the battery compartment that you use to activate it in the app. It will also allow you to test your existing smoke detector and listen for it to ensure it can hear and recognize it. The app also allows you to monitor the device's health, including whether it is online and its signal strength. Battery health is located at the top of the device's screen.

Not worth your time. Wait for Ring to fix their product.
Looked great. Smaller than I thought. It can't detect smoke or CO by itself and is reliant on existing device. Not ideal but was ok with it so tried to install. Followed all instructions on set up and it won't finish. Wifi is strong and updated without issue but won't finish testing no matter what i do. Waited over a month to receive product but being a guinea pig for testing new ring product was not a good idea on my part. Time to return.

Would not connect to Ring app.
Product refuses to connect with the Ring app. This version is objectively worse than the original z wave version which would have connected to the alarm system in seconds. This version requires amazon sidewalk which I have enabled and according to the chatbot I also have a sidewalk compatible camera installed which is supposed to act as a sidewalk gateway. But no matter what I tried, the smoke and co listener refused to connect with the ring app. The sidewalk connection seems to be the big difference here. It appears that someone decided to create a proprietary protocol to replace Wi-Fi (like the ring cameras use) and z wave (like the ring alarm sensors use). Not sure why anyone would do this, especially since it doesn’t seem to work very well.

Don’t Read the Other Reviews!
Worked perfect for me!I was nervous after reading the other reviews, but as long as you have a strong wifi connection for the update and you install it as directed, you should have no issues getting it set up. Great product for a great price!

REVISED - They didn't work at first - but Ring support contacted me
Posting an amended review:While the initial experience was frustrating (see below). Right before I was about to bring the devices to the return drop off, I noticed an email from Ring Support. We set up a call for the week after and the Support team did help to eventually pair the device. Turns out it wasn't user error, so I wasn't crazy. But we did have to do a reset on the device and then the pairing worked. So I've changed my rating.Original ReviewI can't give it any stars because the devices didn't work. Context: I'm actually a big ring ecosystem user. Have the outdoor cameras (some wired, some standalone with solar panels), have the doorbell, even have the indoor cameras. So I figured, why not stay in the ecosystem? However, upon unboxing the device (BOTH DEVICES, as I ordered two of them), and attempting to install the device, they simply would not update; I must have tried re-doing the update at least 3 times per devices, no dice. They would reach the end and then say "device could not update" - see screenshot.Clearly not a blip or oversight if BOTH devices had the same problem. Total garbage. Do not buy.Oh and Ring:What an embarrassing product launch. All the work to trip over a simple device update loop.

Won't Detect Alarm - Useless
Many attempts to have it detect my alarm and it will not. Totally useless. Installed exactly as instructions state 3-6" from existing smoke alarm. Should be simple to setup and use. NOT a product I can recommend unless they do some serious updates to fix it.

WASTE OF TIME. Terrible product
BY FAR THE LARGEST PIECE OF crap product.I called after hours of it not being an β€œeasy set up” like advertised and she said I needed a minimum amount of Wi-Fi. Then she said that I had the minimum amount of Wi-Fi, but I needed to contact my Wi-Fi provider and they would help me set it up.. waste of money don’t waste your time.

Compact and easy to install.
Easy to install and is very compact. Even came with Duracell batteries installed using a plastic pull tab to activate. Understand this is a listening device and does not detect smoke or carbon monoxide. Setup was easy and adds piece of mind when away from home. I’ll be curious to see what battery life looks like.
