Assessed on the standards the product is actually certified to and on how the format fits a working shift, by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor.
The 3M 504 is the standard between-uses respirator wipe — alcohol-free so it cleans facepiece seals without degrading the elastomer.

OSHA's respiratory protection standard expects respirators to be cleaned and sanitized; a box at the station is how shared and daily-wear masks actually stay that way.

3m 504 respirator cleaning wipes — what the listing actually specifies
What to check before you buy
An air-purifying respirator filters air, it does not supply any. Under 29 CFR 1910.134 no air-purifying respirator may be worn in an atmosphere that is IDLH or oxygen-deficient (below 19.5% oxygen). Those conditions require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA, and no filter or cartridge rating changes that.
- Cartridge matched to the contaminant
- A half mask is only as good as what is fitted to it. Particulate filters do nothing for vapors, and gas/vapor cartridges do nothing for particulates.
- Assigned protection factor
- A half mask carries an assigned protection factor of 10 under OSHA 1910.134. If the exposure exceeds ten times the occupational exposure limit, it is the wrong class of respirator.
- Change-out schedule
- OSHA requires a cartridge change schedule based on objective data. Waiting to smell or taste breakthrough is not acceptable for substances with poor warning properties.
- Facepiece size
- Half masks come in sizes and fit testing is done on the specific make, model and size. A different size is a different respirator.
