Editor's take:

The 3M 6005 Formaldehyde and Organic Vapor Respirator Cartridge is the right gas-only cartridge for formalin work in clean air. If your air also carries biological aerosol or dust β€” common in pathology β€” step up to the 3M 60925, which builds in P100. 3M 6005 Formaldehyde and Organic Vapor Respirator Cartridge overview

The 3M 6005 Formaldehyde and Organic Vapor Respirator Cartridge is a NIOSH-approved gas/vapor cartridge for 3M bayonet respirators. It adsorbs formaldehyde gas and organic solvent vapor and twist-locks onto 3M reusable half masks and full facepieces in a matched pair. Reach for the 6005 when your defining exposure is formaldehyde β€” it's the dedicated cartridge for formalin work where there is no airborne dust or mist. See our how to choose a respirator cartridge guide and respirator cartridge color chart to confirm your exposure before ordering.

It is a gas/vapor cartridge only β€” there is no particulate filter inside, so it does not stop biological aerosol, tissue mist, or dust. If any aerosol is present, pair it with a 3M 5N11 or 5P71 prefilter behind a 501 retainer, or move to the all-in-one 3M 60925 (formaldehyde/OV + P100). If your air carries a broader gas mix beyond formaldehyde, the 3M 6006 or 3M 60926 (multi-gas/P100) covers more ground.

Safety note β€” formaldehyde is a recognized carcinogen.

The 6005 protects only against formaldehyde and organic vapor within its NIOSH rating and assigned cartridge limits. It has no particulate filter and does not protect against biological aerosol, acid gas, ammonia, or carbon monoxide, and no air-purifying cartridge adds oxygen. High-concentration, oxygen-deficient, or unknown atmospheres require supplied-air equipment or another solution specified by a qualified safety professional β€” never rely on this cartridge for those conditions. A cartridge or filter carries no assigned protection factor of its own β€” the APF comes from the facepiece it is fitted to: 10 for a half mask, 50 for a full facepiece (OSHA 1910.134 Table 1), which is the number that decides the highest exposure the respirator may legally be worn in. That facepiece must be fit tested before first use and at least annually, and a fit test is specific to one make, model, and size β€” passing on one mask does not carry over to another. Perform a user seal check every time the respirator is donned, and note that facial hair crossing the sealing surface disqualifies a tight-fitting respirator no matter how well it fit at the last test.

Where it fits

Identify the contaminant before choosing any cartridge β€” ideally through an industrial-hygiene assessment. Reach for the 6005 in pathology, anatomy, and histology labs where formalin exposure is confirmed but aerosol is controlled; embalming and mortuary work with preservative fluids; and formaldehyde-resin and solvent production where formaldehyde and organic vapor are the defining hazards. For formaldehyde work where aerosol or dust is also present, the 3M 60925 is the lower-hassle option. If several gases beyond formaldehyde are present, step to a multi-gas cartridge from the multi-gas cartridges collection.

Pros & cons

Pros
  • Dedicated formaldehyde + organic vapor protection
  • End-of-service-life indicator standard for formaldehyde service
  • Low-profile, standard 3M bayonet fit
  • Purpose-built for pathology, embalming, and resin work
Keep in mind
  • No particulate filter β€” needs a prefilter for aerosol
  • Not rated for acid gas, ammonia, or carbon monoxide
  • For aerosol-heavy pathology, the 60925 is simpler
  • Bayonet-only β€” won't fit non-3M respirator platforms

Frequently asked questions

What is the 3M 6005 used for?

Formaldehyde and organic vapor protection β€” pathology, anatomy and histology labs, embalming and mortuary work, and formaldehyde-resin production β€” on 3M bayonet respirators.

Does the 3M 6005 protect against formaldehyde?

Yes. It's NIOSH-rated for formaldehyde gas as well as organic solvent vapor, and it's the dedicated cartridge for formalin exposure.

Does the 3M 6005 have a particulate filter?

No. It's a gas/vapor cartridge only. For aerosol or dust, add a 3M 5N11 or 5P71 prefilter with a 501 retainer, or use the 3M 60925, which includes P100.

What respirators does the 3M 6005 fit?

3M bayonet respirators: the 6000, 6500QL, and 7500 half masks and the 6000 series, 7800S, and Ultimate FX FF-400 full facepieces. It does not fit Honeywell North, Moldex, MSA, GVS, or 3M Secure Click respirators.

What's the difference between the 3M 6005 and the 60925?

Both protect against formaldehyde and organic vapor. The 60925 adds a built-in P100 filter for aerosol and dust; the 6005 is gas-only and needs a separate prefilter if particulate is present.

Does the 3M 6005 protect against ammonia or acid gas?

No. It's not rated for ammonia, methylamine, or acid gases. Those hazards require different cartridges.

Is the 3M 6005 right for pathology and lab work?

Yes, for formaldehyde and organic vapor where the air carries no significant aerosol. Because pathology air often does carry biological aerosol, many labs add a prefilter or choose the 60925 instead.

Can I use the 3M 6005 for embalming?

Yes. It covers formaldehyde vapor from preservative fluids during embalming on a fit-tested 3M facepiece. If aerosolized fluids or dust are present, step up to the 60925 for combined gas and P100 protection.

Does the 3M 6005 have an end-of-service-life indicator?

An end-of-service-life indicator is standard for formaldehyde cartridges, giving a visual cue as capacity nears its limit. Always follow your written change-out schedule rather than relying on the indicator alone.

How many 3M 6005 cartridges do I need?

3M bayonet cartridges install as a pair, one on each side of the facepiece. Confirm the exact pack quantity on the current listing before ordering, as packaging can vary.

When should I replace the 3M 6005?

Replace it per the end-of-service-life indicator and your employer's change-out schedule, or sooner if you detect odor or irritation, breathing becomes difficult, or the cartridge is damaged.

Should I buy the 3M 6005 or the 60925?

Buy the 6005 for clean formalin environments at the lowest cost. Buy the 60925 if biological aerosol, tissue mist, or dust is also present and you want formaldehyde-plus-P100 protection in one cartridge.

Reviewed by Steven Eaton, WC Safety. Specifications reflect 3M's published data for the 6005 formaldehyde/organic-vapor cartridge; formaldehyde exposure limits and respirator selection should follow OSHA 1910.1048, 1910.134, and a workplace hazard assessment. High-concentration formaldehyde exposure can be immediately dangerous to life and may require supplied-air equipment.

Worked for me!
Okay, this is going to be an odd review, and maybe a little gross. I bought these filters to use for the mask I had to buy in order to get through my human gross anatomy class. I'm allergic to formaldehyde and was stuck going to the lab for class, study sessions, and exams--no way around that. These worked perfectly. The mask they go in is really hot and uncomfortable (as is human gross anatomy lab in general), but it worked--I never noticed any fumes getting in, and the one time I took my mask off to say something I realized exactly how well it was working. I ended up using the disposable Tyvek coveralls and disposable shower caps to keep the smell from getting in my clothes and hair and making me sick for the rest of the day after lab, and it really did work. I looked like a freak, but hey, I got an A on the final. And I couldn't have done that whilst vomiting from breathing in formaldehyde the whole time...

Great quality package
If you want to be able to work with dangerous fumes or glues, you are going to need this cartridge. It comes in a sturdy package and a pair of cartridges. I personally am using this with a half mask 3M respirator and it came in good condition. It works like a charm however, it does take used to breathing with because the filter is quite dense. But that's to be expected because exposure to these toxic chemicals is dangerous. I also gave it to my wife who also works with glues (she's an eyelash technician) and she won't work without it.

Smell what?! All I smell is money!
If you work with Formaldehyde, this is HIGHLY recommeded! If you are a hair stylist and do Brazillian Blowouts , you know that the formaldehyde is essential for straightening hair and vital to use, but highly toxic. Big bucks for pulling them off so buy them and add this to your arsnal is a key! These filters along with the mask not only offer comfort ability but maximum saftey for your loved ones! Don't forget 3M goggles! @Beauty.byRachel. Super easy to attach to mask and last a good enough time. Slide on, twist, and snap. Done!

Life saver
I primarily use these filters with my 3m respirator while doing custom fab work such as wood frame building, metal work, and painting. However this year I used these during California's devastating wildfire season when smoke and ash filled the skies where I live. I could not find these in stores anywhere due to the pandemic. So when I found these online at a reasonable price I bought them. They were a life saver. While others only had cloth face covering I was well protected with my respirator and new filters. My favorite filters so far.
