Foam Ear Plugs
What foam ear plugs should industrial buyers choose in 2026?
Short answer: For most high-noise workplaces, the Moldex 6800 Pura-Fit (NRR 33) is the best all-day foam plug — low insertion pressure with maximum attenuation, sold in bulk. If you want the world's best-selling disposable, the Howard Leight Max-1 (NRR 33) is the benchmark, and food and pharma lines should run the metal-detectable Moldex 6615 SparkPlugs.
Foam Ear Plugs (2026)
Foam ear plugs are the workhorse of hearing protection — single-use polyurethane or PVC foam plugs that you roll down, insert, and let expand to seal the ear canal. They deliver the highest Noise Reduction Ratings of any in-ear option (up to NRR 33) at the lowest per-pair cost, which is why they dominate manufacturing, construction, and shooting environments. This collection covers every disposable foam plug we stock; if you want washable plugs instead, see reusable ear plugs, and if you need a band you can hang around your neck between tasks, see banded ear plugs.
Editor's pick — Moldex 6800 Pura-Fit
The right foam plug for the widest range of workers: NRR 33 attenuation with notably low insertion pressure, so it stays comfortable across a full shift. Sold in a 200-pair box for the lowest cost-per-use in this collection. (We earn an Amazon commission if you buy through the Amazon link below — it never affects ranking.)

What this collection covers
- Uncorded roll-down foam — the standard high-NRR disposable, like the Moldex 6800 Pura-Fit and Howard Leight Max-1. Cross-listed under cordless ear plugs.
- Corded foam — for workers who remove plugs frequently; the cord keeps the pair together. See all corded ear plugs.
- Metal-detectable foam — for food, beverage, and pharma lines, like the Moldex 6615 SparkPlugs (review). Full range under metal-detectable ear plugs.
- Maximum-protection foam (NRR 33) — every plug that hits the top rating sits in NRR 33 ear plugs; high-30s options are in high-NRR ear plugs.
- Bulk supply & dispensers — boxes of 200 pairs and wall stations to keep plugs stocked at the line. See ear plug dispensers.

Which foam ear plug should you buy?
- Buy the Moldex 6800 Pura-Fit if you want maximum NRR with the lowest insertion pressure for all-day wear.
- Buy the Howard Leight Max-1 if you want the proven best-selling NRR 33 plug and predictable bulk supply.
- Buy the Howard Leight Laser Lite LL-1 if workers struggle with fit — its tapered shape is the easiest to seat correctly.
- Buy the Moldex 6615 SparkPlugs if you run a food, beverage, or pharmaceutical line that requires metal-detectable PPE.
- Buy the DeWalt DPG63BG50 Bell if cost-per-pair is the deciding factor and you still need NRR 33.
How to choose foam ear plugs
NRR and real-world attenuation
Every plug here is rated NRR 29–33, but the rated number is a laboratory ceiling. OSHA and NIOSH both recommend derating foam plugs in the field — a common method is to subtract 7 from the NRR, then halve the result, when estimating protection from a single hearing protector. If you need help reading the rating, see our explainer on what NRR means and how to derate it.
Corded vs uncorded
Uncorded plugs are cheapest and best for continuous wear. Choose corded ear plugs when workers move in and out of noise and need to keep the pair together, or where a dropped plug is a contamination risk.
Fit and insertion
Foam plugs only deliver their rated NRR when rolled down tightly and inserted deep enough to expand inside the canal. Self-fitting tapered designs such as the Howard Leight Laser Lite LL-1 reduce fit errors on lines where training time is short.
Bulk supply and dispensers
For a busy plant, buy 200-pair boxes and mount ear plug dispensers at entry points so protection is always within reach. Consistent availability is the single biggest driver of actual usage rates.
When foam isn't the answer
If plugs are removed and reinserted dozens of times a shift, washable reusable ear plugs cost less over time. In very high or impulse noise, pair foam plugs with ear muffs for dual protection (add 5 dB to the higher device's NRR as a rule of thumb).
Regulatory context
U.S. workplace noise exposure is governed by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95, which sets a 90 dBA permissible exposure limit over an 8-hour TWA and an 85 dBA action level that triggers a hearing conservation program. Foam ear plugs are a primary control for meeting those limits; for the full requirements see our guide to OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 hearing conservation. All foam plugs in this collection are labeled with an EPA/ANSI Noise Reduction Rating as required for sale in the United States.

Frequently asked questions
What are foam ear plugs made of?
Most are slow-recovery polyurethane (PU) foam; some legacy designs like the 3M E-A-R Classic 310-1001 use PVC foam. Both compress for insertion and expand to seal the ear canal.
What NRR do foam ear plugs offer?
Foam plugs carry the highest in-ear ratings available, typically NRR 29 to NRR 33. Every NRR 33 option is grouped in NRR 33 ear plugs.
Foam vs reusable ear plugs — which is better?
Foam wins on attenuation, comfort for long wear, and lowest upfront cost; reusable flanged plugs win on total cost when reinserted frequently and on cleanliness. Compare the full range under reusable ear plugs.
How do I insert foam ear plugs correctly?
Roll the plug into a thin, crease-free cylinder, reach over your head to pull the ear up and back, insert past the canal opening, and hold for 20–30 seconds while it expands. A correctly seated plug looks short from the outside and noticeably muffles your own voice.
Are foam ear plugs reusable?
They are single-use. Foam absorbs earwax and grime and loses its recovery, which degrades the seal. For repeated daily use, switch to reusable ear plugs.
Corded or uncorded — which should I order?
Uncorded for continuous wear and lowest cost; corded when plugs come in and out often or a loose plug is a contamination hazard.
What are the best foam ear plugs for shooting?
High-NRR foam like the Howard Leight Max-1 works well for range use. For electronic and hybrid options see shooting & range hearing protection.
Are foam ear plugs OSHA-approved?
OSHA does not "approve" individual plugs; it requires that hearing protection reduce employee exposure below the limits in 29 CFR 1910.95. Any NRR-labeled foam plug here can be part of a compliant program — see the hearing conservation guide.
Do foam ear plugs expire?
Unused plugs have a long shelf life if kept clean and dry, but manufacturers list a shelf life (commonly around three years) because foam can stiffen over time, which slows expansion and weakens the seal.
Do you stock metal-detectable foam plugs for food plants?
Yes — the Moldex 6615 SparkPlugs and the full metal-detectable ear plugs range are made for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical environments.
Which foam ear plug has the highest NRR?
Several hit the top rating of NRR 33, including the Moldex 6800 Pura-Fit and Howard Leight Max-1. Browse them all in NRR 33 ear plugs.
How many should I buy for a crew?
Plan one pair per worker per shift for uncorded plugs. A 200-pair box such as the Moldex 6800 Pura-Fit covers a 25-person crew for about eight shifts; pair it with a wall dispenser to control usage.
