- One lock, one key, one worker
- Under OSHA 1910.147 each authorized employee applies their own lock, and only that employee removes it. Shared or master-keyed locks defeat the purpose.
- Devices must be durable and identifiable
- Lockout devices have to withstand the environment they are used in and must identify the worker who applied them. A padlock with no identification does not meet the standard.
- Verify the isolation
- Applying the device is not the end. The standard requires verifying that the energy has actually been isolated and dissipated before work begins.

Can one lock cover several workers?

Is a tag alone ever enough?
Only where the energy-isolating device cannot accept a lock. Tagout alone must then be supported by additional means providing protection equivalent to lockout.
Who can remove a lockout device?
